    Synthetic biomimetic compounds play crucial roles in virtually all aspects of biology and medicine. Their continual development contributes towards understanding and manipulating the normal action of enzymes and other proteins as well as in the development of new drugs. Herein, the novel synthesis of biomimetic enzyme inhibitors, including GlcNAc-thiazolines, GlcNAc-thiolsulfonates, and seleninates, selenonates, and various other organoselenium compounds, is reported. Evaluation of these biomimetics against N-acetyl-β-hexosaminidases, protein tyrosine phosphatases, and some nucleoside processing enzymes is described.     Comparison of Different Optimization Techniques in Electron Lens Design

    To design electron lens systems, applying a fully automated optimization routine has not yet been feasible, especially for the case where the optimization has many free variables of the lens system, such as all parameters that define the geometry of the lens electrodes and the voltage of each electrode. Hence, the study of the implementation of different optimization procedures has not yet been possible either. In one of our previous studies, we have proposed to use the so-called Second Order Electrode Method (SOEM) which performs the electrostatic field calculations in a very short time by the approximations of the field near the optical axis. There, using SOEM in field calculation, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) was successfully implemented to optimize the electron lens systems. One of the questions that has not been studied and answered in the literature yet, is whether the GA is the most suitable option among different optimization techniques for the design/optimization of electron lens systems. In this paper, by implementing the SOEM technique as the field calculation method, different optimization procedures are implemented and their performances are compared. For this study, a typical six electrode lens system is employed. The implemented optimization techniques include calculus-based local optimization (‘Fmin’) and metaheuristic methods such as GA, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), and Simulated Annealing (SA). The results demonstrate that the population-based global optimization techniques like GA and PSO significantly outperform single-based local optimization methods such as ‘Fmin’ and SA. Additionally, PSO shows slightly better performance than GA, although it cannot be concluded that PSO will always outperform GA for every electron lens design problem. Furthermore, in the comparison between the two single-based optimization techniques, the metaheuristic approach (SA) outperforms the calculus-based one (‘Fmin’).     Chorea as the First and Only Manifestation of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

    We report a case of right-sided hemichorea associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in a female patient who presented with involuntary movements of hand and foot, without any other manifestation of SLE. Further workup showed positive tests for antinuclear antibody, anti-Smith antibody, anti-dsDNA, and antiphospholipid antibody (aPL). The patient was started on aspirin and hydroxychloroquine and her chorea resolved after three weeks of followup. This is one of the few reported cases of SLE where chorea is presented as the first and only manifestation of SLE

    On the binary nature of the γ-ray sources AGL J2241+4454 (= MWC 656) and HESS J0632+057 (= MWC 148)

    We present optical spectroscopy of MWC 656 and MWC 148, the proposed optical counterparts of the gamma-ray sources AGL J2241+4454 and HESS J0632+0 57, respectively. The main parameters of the Halpha emission line (EW, FWHM and centroid velocity) in these stars are modulated on the proposed orbital periods of 60.37 and 321 days, respectively. These modulations are likely produced by the resonant interaction of the Be discs with compact stars in eccentric orbits. We also present radial velocity curves of the optical stars folded on the above periods and obtain the first orbital elements of the two gamma-ray sources thus confirming their binary nature. Our orbital solution support eccentricities e~0.4 and 0.83+-0.08 for MWC 656 and MWC 148, respectively. Further, our orbital elements imply that the X-ray outbursts in HESS J0632+057/MWC 148 are delayed ~0.3 orbital phases after periastron passage, similarly to the case of LS I +61 303. In addition, the optical photometric light curve maxima in AGL J2241+4454/MWC 656 occur ~0.25 phases passed periastron, similar to what is seen in LS I +61 303. We also find that the orbital eccentricity is correlated with orbital period for the known gamma-ray binaries. This is explained by the fact that small stellar separations are required for the efficient triggering of VHE radiation. Another correlation between the EW of Halpha and orbital period is also observed, similarly to the case of Be/X-ray binaries. These correlations are useful to provide estimates of the key orbital parameters Porb and e from the Halpha line in future Be gamma-ray binary candidates
