The purpose of this Final Year report is to provide a clearer overview to the student’s FYP Professor, Assoc Prof Luo Fang Lin of the knowledge and experiences the student has accumulated and how he has applied the theory he has learnt from his undergraduate course to meet the objective of the project. In this project, the student is required to design and build a DC-AC-DC chopping converter with a feedback controller to ensure that a constant output voltage of 33VDC despite fluctuations of input voltage (9.3VDC to 11.5VDC).Bachelor of Engineerin

Design of hybrid split-capacitors and split-inductors applied in positive output super-lift luo-converters

The DC/DC conversion technology has been developed very fast over the decades, and many new types of DC/DC converters are designed. As a very important part of the DC/DC conversion technology, voltage-lift (VL) technology has been widely used in design of DC/DC converters, and the theory is maturely built. While the output voltage of this kind of converters only increases in arithmetic progression when more stages are added. By using super-lift (SL) technique, the output voltage will increase in geometric progression. In this paper, a novel approach is introduced – super-lift Luo-converters armed with split-capacitors and split-inductors. By replacing the original capacitors and inductors with these split elements the output voltage will be lifted to another higher level. This is a very important contribution to the conversion technology by Professor Luo Fang Lin. In this report, formulas and simulation results are presented and analyzed.Bachelor of Engineerin

This report presents the training received and work done by the author during the 22-week Industrial Attachment with ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Pte Ltd. The author was attached to the section of Distributed Control System and Triple Modular Redundant System (DCS/TMR) under Plant Computing Group. This report starts with a brief introduction to the history of ExxonMobil and the Plant Computing Group. The details about the Distributed Control System of Jurong Refinery including its components and the way they are networked and integrated into a whole reliable control system are presented in Chapter 2. The remaining chapters of this report present the projects and tasks completed by the author. It turned out that participating in the Control House Migration Project and other tasks not only enriched the author’s knowledge, but also enhanced his hands on ability and improved his interpersonal skills. The company culture – safety first, reinforced his mindset on safety at every aspect, inside and off work. It is concluded that this attachment has prepared the author necessary skills to learn and apply scientific knowledge and necessary interpersonal skills in the work environment.

    Research on DC-modulated AC/AC converters

AC/AC converter is popular equipment widely applied in various industrial applications. However, it has high total harmonic distortion (THD), low power factor (PF) and poor power transfer efficiency (η). A new idea of the DC-modulated AC/AC converter is advanced by using DC/DC conversion technology to improve the power factor. The main objective of this project is to analyze the circuits and discuss the simulation and hardware testing results of this new idea applied to a Buck converter. The analysis in this project will be divided into three steps. Firstly, the author calculates the mathematical model to get a transfer function of this new type of Buck converters. Secondly, the author will use the software named PISM to simulate the circuit operation. Thirdly, in order to prove the practicability of this new design, the author would like to set up a hardware model after getting some correct parameters from the PISM. From the discussion in this report, the most significant parameters are duty cycle and frequency. For this new technology requirement, these significant parameters which improve power factors distinctly will take a lot of new influences on the converter. The consideration of these influences will be discussed by simulation results and hardware testing results which give some helps to other researchers to consummate this new technology in future.Master of Science (Power Engineering

As the demand of the modern electronic devices and appliances are getting higher, the role of the converters with higher output and efficiency become wider for different industries. It has been the role of engineers to explore the converter topology to provide higher output voltage in simple design with less cost. There are quite a number of different ways of lifting output voltage in converter topology. The method that the author will be introducing is called “Split- Inductors Method”, where the output voltage is totally dependent on the number of inductors used in the converter design. The report will include a detail discussion about design and results of” split-inductors topology”, applied to “Positive Output Super Lift Luo Converter” using software simulations and hardware experiments.Bachelor of Engineerin

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
