Replication Data for: Finite element-based diffraction correction for piezoelectric transducers accounting for diffraction at transmission, propagation, and reception

    No full text
This dataset contains modelled diffraction corrections for an example ultrasonic transmit-receive measurement system with piezoelectric transducers, and the underlying raw data used to calculate these diffraction corrections. Three different diffraction correction models are used: the finite element diffraction correction model (FEDC), the simplified finite element diffraction correction model (SFDC) and the baffled piston diffraction correction model (BPDC). The example modelling case is an ultrasonic measurement system in air at ambient conditions, with two coaxially aligned cylindrical piezoelectric ceramic disk transducers of the material Pz27 (CTS Ferroperm Piezoceramics, Denmark) with dimensions 20x2 mm. The main output parameters are voltage-to-voltage transfer functions and diffraction corrections, as a function of frequency and axial distance. The data was produced as part of a PhD funded by the the Research Council of Norway, under the project "Subsea gas energy and quality measurement using ultrasonic flow meters" with project number 303169.</p

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Shades of Green: A qualitative study of conflicts between Environmental Pressure Groups

    No full text
This study is an attempt to gain a beginning understanding of the reasons why Environmental Pressure Groups (EPGs) tend to conflict with each other. I present first a hypothesis on how different EPGs focusing on different or identical species of animals or geographical regions can lead to conflicts. I then examine different directions in environmental ethics, and suggest as a second hypothesis how animal rights views, animal liberation views, conservationist views and preservationist views of EPGs can cause conflicts between them. As the third and final hypothesis I present some different work methods and organizational structures of EPGs, and suggest how differences in these can be the reasons for conflicts. I then conduct a study of four quite different conflicts between EPGs as they appear on the Internet, and try to find the underlying reasons for each of these conflicts both in relation to my hypotheses and in relation to possible reasons for the conflicts that I haven’t covered in the hypotheses. The end result is a qualitative study of these four conflicts, leading to a thorough discussion about possible motives, methods and views of environmental organizations in general, and about how conflicts can take many different forms. I discuss how conflicts might or might not be solved, what solving a conflict means and if solving a conflict is even always in the best interests of the EPGs involved in them

The Lisbon Strategy: One for all or one in all?: An analysis of the European Union's Lisbon strategy and the lack of progress within it

    No full text
In 2000, the European Union in Lisbon embarked on the road to become the world’s most competitive and knowledge-based economy by 2010 - capable of sustainable growth and creating more and better jobs. The Lisbon strategy called for structural reforms of the European economy in order to solve the gap in competitiveness between Europe and its competitors and to accommodate demographic development. However, a decade into the new millennium, the Lisbon strategy is still far from its goals. This thesis sets out to investigate why the European Union has not managed to close this gap and successfully impose structural reforms in the European economy. The overall proposition of the thesis is that the Lisbon strategy cannot address the problem of economic growth and competitiveness, because Lisbon deals with areas of more socio-economic character than traditional EU policies. Subsequently, national political priorities win at the expense of common economic goals, in other words, the Lisbon strategy entails a conflict of interests between the Community and the member states, which is blocking progress. By looking into the economic and rhetorical rationale behind Lisbon, the thesis sets out to examine if the gap between the competitors and Europe is as grave as it was laid out to be. In addition, the thesis examines whether or not the ‘toolbox’ and governance structure in Lisbon hold the potential to transform the European economies. In addition, the thesis researches on two specific summits, the launch of Lisbon in 2000 and the re-launch in 2005, to clarify if a conflict of interest between the national and Community level has constructed the Lisbon in such a way, that it has become hard to fulfil. The thesis finds that Europe’s problem prior to Lisbon is one of external as well as internal competitiveness gaps. From the outset of the toolbox, the Lisbon strategy has the potential to bring about a restructuring of the European economies as it entails policy areas that are relevant in the new knowledge economy. However, the construction and implementation phase of Lisbon clearly show a lack of leadership, not just by the national governments, but also by the European Commission. The thesis finds that when looking at the overall Lisbon process so far, there is a gap between Community and national interests. This is not only a problem for progress within Lisbon, but may also have consequences in relation to future European integration

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

The aim of the thesis is to investigate to what extent euroscepticism is a multidimensional concept which affects the European Union’s integration process and whether the concept differs between European member states as well as over time.
