Culture as Politics: A Note on Language Legislation in Putin’s Russia
Get PDFOne of the goals of this volume, and of the conference that led to its compilation, is to point at the significance of our fields, to show the world in what ways languages — and modern language studies — are important, to demonstrate that language, history, culture, literature — and knowledge about these topics — are essential to society. Now, there is a range of possible answers to the question “important to whom?” In this article, I discuss the ways in which culture in general, and language in particular, has become an important field of attention to the authorities in today’s Russia, and for a particular purpose. Over the last decade, Russian authorities have significantly increased their involvement in the cultural field, creating programmes for the patriotic education of citizens, adopting new laws and regulations affecting film, literature and art, and exploring the capital of culture for all it is worth. It is important to get a firm grasp of the state’s renewed interest in culture, in order to assess its impact in the broader context of Russian politics and society. In the following, I discuss a few concrete examples of state involvement in the cultural sphere, focusing in particular on the question of language legislation.</jats:p

Ut av gråsonen: Språk og tilhørighet i to romaner om krigen i Donbas (Serhij Zjadans Internatet og Andrej Kurkovs Grå bier)
Get PDFRusslands krigføring i Ukraina siden 2014 har hatt stor innflytelse på ukrainsk kultur. Krigserfaringer tematiseres på mange ulike måter i litteratur, film, musikk og kunst. I et samfunn rammet av krig, intensiveres spørsmål og konflikter knyttet til identiteter. Nyere sosiologiske og sosiolingvistiske undersøkelser i Ukraina har kartlagt utfordringer som oppstår blant folk med hybride identiteter som er utsatt for militær konflikt; disse opplever en økt følelse av desorientering i et uavklart spenningsforhold mellom individuelle, lokale og nasjonale interesser. Litteraturen gir oss anledning til å studere hvordan denne typen komplekse spørsmål forhandles på individnivå. I denne artikkelen analyserer jeg to romaner med handling fra krigen i Donbas, Serhij Zjadans Internatet (2017) og Andrej Kurkovs Grå bier (2018). Romanene skildrer livet til noen sivile i det vi kan kalle ulike dimensjoner av «gråsonen» mellom frontlinjene. Med utgangspunkt i romanenes fremstilling av tospråkligheten (ukrainsk og russisk) i Donbas viser jeg hvordan tekstene kan forstås som en utforskning og fortolkning av spørsmål knyttet til identitet og tilhørighet. Begge romanene beskriver hovedpersonens utvikling i møte med grenselinjer mellom språk, identiteter og tilhørighet, men skiller seg vesentlig i den konkrete tilgangen til problematikken, som også speiles i romanenes stil og poetikk
