Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDFLa tesis se centra en la comprensión de las interrelaciones entre la construcción de identidades sociales y las prácticas políticas de mujeres tzeltales y tzotziles del estado de Chiapas, México; considerando las condiciones socioeconómicas y políticas en que viven, resultado de las intersecciones entre género, etnia, clase, procesos de racismo y de violación de sus derechos.
En el escrito se desarrolla tanto el marco general del movimiento zapatista, las construcciones sociales de lo indígena, las condiciones de vida tanto de hombres como de mujeres indígenas en el estado de Chiapas, México; la descripción y correspondiente análisis de cada uno de los escenarios en los que se centró el estudio, discutiendo respecto a la construcción de identidades sociales y formas de participación política de las mujeres; y para finalizar, se presenta un apartado con algunas discusiones finales que nos permiten delimitar algunos elementos para contestar a las preguntas de investigación, así como para el desarrollo de futuras investigaciones.
Algunas de las preguntas que guiaron el presente estudio fueron: ¿qué relación existe entre las formas de participación política de las mujeres tzeltales y tzotziles y la construcción situada, emergente y contingente de sus identidades sociales? ¿Qué procesos sociosimbólicos y estructurales conllevan la transformación de sus identidades sociales? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de viraje en sus vidas y qué elementos, a manera de interseccionalidad (género, etnia, clase) participaron en él? ¿Cuáles y cómo son sus prácticas y estrategias políticas? ¿Qué sentido le dan a sus prácticas políticas y a la construcción situada de sus identidades sociales? ¿Cuál es el valor y/o contribución de considerar algunos planteamientos desde la propuesta de la reflexividad, para el análisis del proceso mismo de investigación?
La propuesta metodológica está basada en relatos de vida y observación participante. Para la primera se desarrollaron entrevistas de tipo cualitativo en modalidad individual y grupal con mujeres tzeltales y tzotziles. Para la segunda se recuperaron algunos elementos desde la propuesta de etnografías críticas y postfeministas. Se trata de una metodología de tipo emergente debido a las características del campo, diverso y contingente; y a la necesidad de seguir o acompañar el itinerario y la trayectoria de las mujeres participantes de la investigación.
De esta forma, el estudio de las interrelaciones entre identidades sociales y prácticas políticas, está enmarcado dentro de dos tipos de escenarios: a) algunas organizaciones civiles en donde las mujeres indígenas forman parte integrante de sus equipos de trabajo y, b) dentro del proyecto de salud comunitaria propuesto por el movimiento zapatista situado en dos comunidades de base también zapatista.
El escrito se constituye en una oportunidad para conocer y denunciar algunas condiciones que violentan y limitan el acceso de las mujeres a sus derechos, a la vez que permite describir, reconocer, reflexionar y recuperar las estrategias de participación social y política que las mujeres han creado y desarrollado en su vida cotidiana, en el camino de la transformación de sus mundos y de sus identidades sociales.The thesis focuses on understanding the interrelationship between the construction of social identities and the political practices of the tzeltales and tzotziles women of the state of Chiapas, Mexico considering the socioeconomic conditions and politics in which they live as a result of the intersections between gender, ethnicity, class, processes of racism and the violation of their rights.
The paper develops extensively the general framework of the Zapatista movement, the social constructions of 'the indigenous', and the living conditions of the indigenous men as well as women in the state of Chiapas, Mexico with the description and corresponding analysis of each of the settings in which the study is centered on discussing the construction of social identities and forms of political participation of the women, and finally, presenting a discussion section that permits us to limit various elements to answer our research questions, which, as such, are part of the development of future research.
Some of the questions which guided the research were: What relationship exists between forms of political participation of the tzeltales and tzotziles women and the situated, emerging and contingent construction of their social identities? What symbolic social processes and structures transmit the transformation of their social identities? What social symbolic and structural processes are involved in the transformation of their social identities? What was the process of change in their lives and what elements and types of intersectionality (gender, ethnicity, and class) participated in that? What were their strategic and political practices? What meaning did they give to their political practices and the situated construction of their social identities? What is the value and/or contribution of considering certain approaches from the proposal of reflexivity for the analysis of our own process of research?
The methodological approach is based on life stories and participative observation. Firstly, we conducted qualitative individual and group interviews with tzeltales and tzotziles women. Secondly, we used elements proposed by critical ethnography and post-feminism. We worked from an emergent type of methodology due to the diverse and contingent characteristic of the countryside and the necessity to follow or accompany the itinerary and trajectory of the women who participated in the study.
From this approach, the study of the interrelationship between social identities and political practices is framed inside two types of settings: a) in some of the civil organizations where indigenous women form an integral part of their working groups and b) inside the Zapatista movement community health project proposal situated in two Zapatista based communities.
The paper constituted an opportunity to understand and denounce certain conditions that violate and limit the access of women to their rights, while at the same time permitting the opportunity to discover, recognize, reflect upon, and recover the social and political strategies of participation that the women have created and developed in their day to day lives, and the way to transform their world and social identities

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
