In addition, a deepening of extreme right and its many expressions is proposed, given its peculiarity and importance as a global threat.
The research activities were conducted according to a mixed methodological approach, using
as methodological tools, an online investigative survey and an open source-based digital ethnography.
The analysis of these researches has produced significant findings, to better understand and
interpret the threat posed by the extreme right in various parts of the world and in the context
of the current pandemic.
Finally, new relationships between concepts lead to the definition of fusion extreme right to
generally identify the phenomena related to extreme right as well as the issue of symbolic
violence

MedInt and the Contours of the Definitional Question: Possibilities for Solutions
Medical Intelligence is not a new field of medicine or intelligence, but with the advent of the pandemic, its perspective has broadened and its definition requires the consideration of multiple theoretical and methodological factors that have not been considered until now. This paper aims to show, through a different perspective, the new areas and issues on which Medical Intelligence is becoming more and more a crucial element. The consideration presented makes use of the studies and insights that have been carried out and continue to be developed as part of the National Medical Intelligence Group as part of the SOCINT – Italian Society of Intelligence established in March 2023 at the Catholic University, Milan under the direction provided by Marco Lombardi and the coordination by Barbara Lucini. Finally, this paper traces lines of work that orient in an innovative way the field of Medical Intelligence and its future developments
Foreword. COVID-19 and Viral Violence: state of the art and beyond
The following three papers aims to present some general reflections,
which have taken place during the research activities related to the project
Converge – COVID-19 Working Group – Itstime Working Group: COVID-19 and Viral Violence. Specifically:
The COVID-19 and Viral Violence Working Group focuses on empirical considerations about the relations between the COVID-19 pandemic and various
forms of violence, emerging during the crisis management. The focus area
consists of multidisciplinary perspectives on political extremisms taking advantage from the pandemic; violent responses to violations of the quarantine;
interpersonal violence; and civil unrest against crisis management measures.
The purpose of the research and study activities carried out within this
Working Group is to propose a reflection on the violent phenomena and
protests that occurred during the pandemic by COVID-19 understood both
as a time space context and as an element that has produced containment
measures towards which to express one’s discomfort and opposition
Soft skills for governing new threats: training methods for LEAs in preventing and countering violent extremism and radicalisation
This paper aims to focus on the need to include new skills as soft skills that are useful for Law Enforcement Agencies in prevention and countering multiple forms of violent extremism.
The change in the scenario of international threats that has been going on for some years now,
makes soft skills an indispensable tool to manage increasingly complex social phenomena such as
those of radicalization and extremism expressed in a more or less violent way.
Soft skills are then defined within the broader context of life – long learning education or lifelong
learning, which therefore considers these skills to be acquired and improved continuously over the
course of their personal and professional lives.
The added value of this proposal lies in wanting to present this approach from a methodological
perspective, thus emphasizing the concrete methodological application that the Lea – Law Enforcement Agency – responsible for the management of radicalisation and extremism, can develop
by taking advantage from its prevention and contrast activities

The Other Side of Resilience to Terrorism A Portrait of a Resilient-Healthy City
This timely treatise introduces an innovative prevention/preparedness model for cities to address and counter terrorist threats and events. It offers theoretical background, mixed-method research, and tools for creating a resilience-based response to terrorism, as opposed to the security-based frameworks commonly in use worldwide. The extended example of Milan as a “resilient-healthy” city pinpoints sociological, political, and economic factors that contribute to terror risk, and outlines how law enforcement and emergency management professionals can adopt more proactive measures. From these observations and findings, the author also makes recommendations for the professional training and city planning sectors to address preparedness issues, and for community inclusion programs to deter criminal activities in at-risk youth.
Features of the coverage:
- Summary of sociological theories of terrorism
- The Resilience D model for assessing and managing urban terrorist activity
- Findings on resilience and vulnerabilities of terror groups
- Photo-illustrated analysis of neighborhoods in Milan, describing areas of risk and resilience
- Virtual ethnography with perspectives from native residents, recent immigrants, and security experts
- Proposals for coordinated communications between resource agencie
