TOMMASINI IN THE CIVIL AND POLITICAL LIFE OF TRIESTE. At the end of the XVIII century Trieste was a small town with a population of about 30.000 inhabitans. The father of Tommasini came to Trieste in 1781 as a consul of the granducate of Tuscany and Muzio Tommasini was born in Trieste in 1794. He studied in Trieste, Ljubljana (as a pupil of the well known botanist Hladnik) and Vienna where he was in contact whith Host (the Author of the fundamental Flora Austriaca, 1827-1831) but finally he became a doctor in law and performed his civil career as a magistrate. Appointed to the government in 1827, Tommasini was particularly for two decades; concerned with the sanitary problems of the impetuously growing town at the same time he explored throroughly the local flora, collected an important herbarium and published the results of several botanical investigations. After the introduction of the constitution in 1850 Tommasini was elected as the first Mayor of the town and occupied this role until 1861. In these years the town developed as the principal trade centre of the Austrian Empire and the population grew to 100.000 people; otherwise the political success hindered Tommasini from elaborating a synthetic work about the flora and vegetation of the Illyrian region

The classification of hazardous areas where explosive gas atmospheres may be present

    No full text
The classification of hazardous areas where explosive gas atmospheres may be present is prescribed by European directives, international and national standards. This paper briefly outlines the area classification procedure and describes the approaches adopted by the international standard. Then a new approach to the calculation of the extent of zones, developed by the author and adopted by the Italian guide for classification of hazardous zone, is presented

Changes in the wind‐wave field and related salt‐marsh lateral erosion: inferences from the evolution of the Venice Lagoon in the last four centuries

Salt marshes are crucially important ecosystems at the boundary between the land and the sea, that are experiencing significant losses worldwide mainly dictated by the erosion of their margins. Improving our understanding of the mechanisms controlling marsh edge erosion is a key step to address conservation issues and salt-marsh response to changes in the environmental forcing. Here we have employed a complete, coupledWind-Wave Tidal Model (WWTM) to analyse the temporal evolution of the wave field, and in particular of the mean wave-power density, in the Venice Lagoon over the past four centuries (from 1611 to 2012). We have then related wave-field changes to the observed erosion patterns determined by comparing recent aerial photographs (1978–2010) and historical bathymetric data. The results of our analyses from the Venice Lagoon show that, while wave-fields did not significantly change from 1611 to 1901, a rapid increase in wave-power densities occurred in the last century. This is suggested to depend on the positive feedback between relevant morphological evolutions and changes in the wave field, both influenced by natural forcing and anthropogenic pressures. We also emphasize the existence of a strong positive linear relationship between the volumetric marsh erosion rate and mean wave-power density. We thus suggest that relating salt-marsh lateral erosion rates to properly computed mean wave-power densities provides a valuable tool to address long-term tidal morphodynamics

Notizie sulla corrispondenza di Antonietta Ferroni Tommasini

The essay intends to present the general characteristics, the main interlocutors and the recurring themes of the correspondence of the Parma scholar Antonietta Ferroni (1780-1839), author of pedagogical and biographical works, linked by ties of friendship to Leopardi and Giordani. Preserved in the Palatina Library of Parma, the letters allow us to reconstruct the personal relationships (above all, but not only, from Parma and Bologna, and extended to authors of pedagogical texts), readings, cultural interests and publishing activity of the addressee, wife of the doctor Giacomo Tommasini and with him for a long time in epistolary relationship
