Structure and microrheology of genome organization: From experiments to physical modeling.
No full textThe mechanisms beyond chromosome folding within the nuclei of eukaryotic cells have fundamental implications in important processes like gene expression and regulation. Yet, they remain widely unknown. Unveiling the secrets of nuclear processes requires a cross-disciplinary approach combining experimental techniques to theoretical, mathematical and physical modeling. In this review, we discuss our current understanding of the generic aspects of genome organization during interphase in terms of the conceptual connection between the large-scale structure of chromosomes and the physics beyond the crumpled structure of entangled ring polymers in solution. Then, we employ this framework to discuss recent experimental and theoretical results for microrheology of Brownian nanoprobes dispersed in the nuclear medium

L’articolo, attraverso “il racconto” dell’esperienza dell’Istituto
di Istruzione Superiore A. Volta di Pescara, mette in
evidenza come la robotica sia un’attività che consente di
attuare tutti quei cambiamenti che oggi sono richiesti alla
scuola. Un’esperienza in tal senso può essere una
opportunità di lavoro, per studenti e docenti, veramente
innovativa, rilevante il suo contributo nell’acquisizione di
competenze. Nella prima parte verranno focalizzati alcuni
concetti fondamentali che si “ritrovano” in un’ attività di
robotica, nella seconda verrà descritto il progetto didattic

No full textLuca Carimini inizia la professione di architetto con alcuni restauri di chiese secondo quel genere di interventi che, a cominciare dal pluridecennale cantiere di San Paolo, avevano caratterizzato l'attività architettonica al tempo di Pio IX, e in continuità con il passato impegno artigianale che lo aveva visto più volte affiancare l'altrui direzione dei lavori come "marmoraro". Sulla scorta degli operatori privilegiati della corte papale che incarnavano l'ala clericale dell'architettura romana tra la prima e la seconda metà del secolo XIX, Carimini sperimenta quel filone cosiddetto del "Classicismo paleocristiano" consistente, non essendosi ancora compreso il restauro scientifico, in operazioni di completamento e rinnovamento secondo i criteri puristici con l'innesto di un singolare "Eclettismo pietistico" oscillante tra il recupero di tradizioni tardomedievali e la ripresa di temi neocinquecenteschi

Modality-independent encoding of individual concepts in the left parietal cortex
No full textAbstract The organization of semantic information in the brain has been mainly explored through category-based models, on the assumption that categories broadly reflect the organization of conceptual knowledge. However, the analysis of concepts as individual entities, rather than as items belonging to distinct superordinate categories, may represent a significant advancement in the comprehension of how conceptual knowledge is encoded in the human brain. Here, we studied the individual representation of thirty concrete nouns from six different categories, across different sensory modalities (i.e., auditory and visual) and groups (i.e., sighted and congenitally blind individuals) in a core hub of the semantic network, the left angular gyrus, and in its neighboring regions within the lateral parietal cortex. Four models based on either perceptual or semantic features at different levels of complexity (i.e., low- or high-level) were used to predict fMRI brain activity using representational similarity encoding analysis. When controlling for the superordinate component, high-level models based on semantic and shape information led to significant encoding accuracies in the intraparietal sulcus only. This region is involved in feature binding and combination of concepts across multiple sensory modalities, suggesting its role in high-level representation of conceptual knowledge. Moreover, when the information regarding superordinate categories is retained, a large extent of parietal cortex is engaged. This result indicates the need to control for the coarse-level categorial organization when performing studies on higher-level processes related to the retrieval of semantic information

Common spatiotemporal processing of visual features shapes object representation
No full textBiological vision relies on representations of the physical world at different levels of complexity. Relevant features span from simple low-level properties, as contrast and spatial frequencies, to object-based attributes, as shape and category. However, how these features are integrated into coherent percepts is still debated. Moreover, these dimensions often share common biases: for instance, stimuli from the same category (e.g., tools) may have similar shapes. Here, using magnetoencephalography, we revealed the temporal dynamics of feature processing in human subjects attending to objects from six semantic categories. By employing Relative Weights Analysis, we mitigated collinearity between model-based descriptions of stimuli and showed that low-level properties (contrast and spatial frequencies), shape (medial-axis) and category are represented within the same spatial locations early in time: 100-150 ms after stimulus onset. This fast and overlapping processing may result from independent parallel computations, with categorical representation emerging later than the onset of low-level feature processing, yet before shape coding. Categorical information is represented both before and after shape, suggesting a role for this feature in the refinement of categorical matching

No full textQuesto lavoro di ricerca offre una presentazione della figura del frate domenicano fiorentino Luca Mannelli e un saggio di edizione della sua Tabulatio et Expositio Senece, un repertorio lemmatico di testi delle opere senecane e commentato con citazioni tratte da diversi autori, commissionatogli dal papa Clemente VI.
Viene ripercorsa la biografia del Mannelli, con indicazione delle sue opere minori. Della Tabulatio, viene condotta per la prima volta un'analisi completa: descrizione analitica dei tre manoscritti dell'opera: Paris. Bibl. Nat. Lat. 8174, Salamanca bibl. Univ. 2638 e Kracow. Bibl. Jagell. 706,. Oltre a questi si descrivono Paris. Bibl. Nat. 8715 e Città del Vaticano, BAV. Borgh. 10; il primo costituisce una editio minor della Tabulatio, il secondo è stato erroneamente ricondotto all'opera del fiorentino, mentre dall'esame è risultato un florilegio senecano antecedente.
L'opera, vastissima benché giuntaci per metà, viene contestualizzata nella realtà avignonese per la quale è stata prodotta e confrontata con la biblioteca papale di cui si è riconosciuto un manoscritto. Si dà infine un saggio di edizione di: lettera dedicatoria, prologo; voci: abstinentia, actio, adulterium, affectus, agricola, ambitio, amor, auctor. L'edizione si basa sulla recensione completa della tradizione.Florentine Dominican Luca Mannelli's major achievement Tabulatio et expositio Senece is presented in a provisional edition, with an outline of Mannelli's life. The Tabulatio, commissioned by Pope Clement VI around the first half of the fifteenth century, is an itemized list which exploits Seneca's works and other classic as well as patristic texts.
A thoroughly researched contextualized biography of Luca Mannelli is firstly provided. Furthermore, a substantial analysis of the Tabulatio is combined with a complete examination of the manuscript tradition, which consists of three witnesses (described in details): Paris, BnF Lat. 8174; Salamanca, Bibl. Univ., 2638 and Kraców, Biblioteka Jagiello?ska, 706. Two further manuscripts are dealt with: Paris, BnF Lat. 8715, a kind of editio minor of Mannelli's Tabulatio; and Borgh. 10, held by the Vatican Library, which has revealed itself as a different Senecan florilegium.
With the aim of providing a contextualization of this huge literary undertaking within the cultural framework of Avignon papacy, the author examines the following sections of the work: the dedicatory letter, the prologue, some headwords: abstinentia, actio, adulatio, adulterium, affectus, agricola, ambitio, amor, auctor.
