Uncertainty-aware segmentation for rainfall prediction post processing
No full textAccurate precipitation forecasts are crucial for applications such as flood
management, agricultural planning, water resource allocation, and weather
warnings. Despite advances in numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, they
still exhibit significant biases and uncertainties, especially at high spatial
and temporal resolutions. To address these limitations, we explore
uncertainty-aware deep learning models for post-processing daily cumulative
quantitative precipitation forecasts to obtain forecast uncertainties that lead
to a better trade-off between accuracy and reliability. Our study compares
different state-of-the-art models, and we propose a variant of the well-known
SDE-Net, called SDE U-Net, tailored to segmentation problems like ours. We
evaluate its performance for both typical and intense precipitation events.
Our results show that all deep learning models significantly outperform the
average baseline NWP solution, with our implementation of the SDE U-Net showing
the best trade-off between accuracy and reliability. Integrating these models,
which account for uncertainty, into operational forecasting systems can improve
decision-making and preparedness for weather-related events

No full textPubblicazione del Catalogo della Prima Mostra del Premio Giovani 2006; Accademia di S. Luca. (Giuria: Guido Canella, Angela Cipriani, Giorgio Ciucci, Paolo Portoghesi, Franco Purini). Il progetto, un'abitazione permanente, è realizzato su un lotto d'angolo di un tessuto residenziale suburbano continuo, l'Isola Brigantine, distante pochi chilometri da Atlantic City e ad essa collegato da un ponte, transito fra due paesaggio e due condizioni urbane e sociali differenti per scala e tipologia. Il tessuto residenziale che accoglie il nuovo edificio è seriale, semplice, americano. Residenze senza identità ma con quei caratteri rassicuranti che affermano l'appartenenza ad una classe, a un preciso gruppo sociale. La committente, di origini italiane anche se integralmente americana, aveva fra i suoi desideri quello di una casa "italiana" o meglio, trattandosi di una casa sul mare, "mediterranea". [...] L'intento del progetto è di trasformare in qualità le vaghe istanze della committenza e i giochi di ibridazione e finte identità che sono la condizione nella quale, oltre Atlantico, continuamente si costruisce il paesaggio urbano americano. Nelle prime fasi di indagine sui materiali di finitura e sul sistema costruttivo, l'ipotesi fu quella di realizzare l'edificio secondo una delle tecniche costruttive italiane più diffuse: calcestruzzo rivestito in pietra, tecnica subito scartata, visti i costi tre volte maggiori rispetto a quella detta "Conventional Wood frame Construction" derivato dal Ballon frame Construction. Questo esperimento di ibridazione tra una forma e una struttura radicalmente diverse tra loro per origine culturale e per concezione materiale, imponendo finiture e dettagli architettonici coerenti con il sistema edilizio adottato ha conferito all'oggetto edilizio astrazione e contemporaneità; gli ha dato tonalità eterea e dinamica, impossibile da realizzare in calcestruzzo intonacato o rivestito in pietra. ENGLISH: The project, a permanent home, is built on a corner lot of a continuously suburban residential fabric, the Brigantine Island, just a few miles from Atlantic City and connected to it by a bridge, transit between two landscapes and two urban conditions and different social scale and type. The residential fabric that welcomes the new building is serial, simple American. Residences without an identity, but with these reassuring characters who claim membership in a class, a specific social group. The client, of Italian origin but entirely American, had among his desires to a house "Italian" or better, being a sea (beach) house, "Mediterranean". [...] The aim of the project is to transform the vague instances of the client into a play of hybridization and fake identities that are the condition in which, across the Atlantic, continuously building the American urban landscape. In the early stages of investigation on finishing materials and the construction system, the idea was to build the building according to one of the most widespread Italian construction techniques: concrete covered with stones, technique immediately discarded, given the cost three times more than one called "Conventional Wood frame Construction" derived from the Ballon frame Construction. This experiment of hybridization between a shape and a structure radically different in origin and design material culture, finishes and imposing architectural details consistent with the adopted building system has given object abstraction and contemporary buildings; gave ethereal tones and dynamic and impossible to make concrete plastered or covered with stone.Publication of the Catalogue of the First Exhibition of the Youth Award 2006 Academy of St. Luke. NOVEL 4H-CHROMEN-4-ONE, 2H-CHROMENE AND CHROMAN DERIVATIVES: DESIGN, SYNTHESIS AND BIOLOGICAL EVALUATION
No full textLa progettazione e sintesi di nuovi antivirali strutturalmente correlati a flavanoidi e flavonoidi sia naturali che sintetici e lo studio della relativa attività anti-picornavirus dei 4H-cromen-4-oni e 2H-cromeni ha portato ad identificare l’(E)-3-stiril-2H-cromene come un inibitore potente, selettivo e ad ampio spettro d’azione nei confronti dei rhinovirus umani (HRV). l’(E)-3-stiril-2H-cromene è stato perciò selezionato come hit compound sul quale effettuare uno studio sistematico di ottimizzazione della struttura. Sono stati quindi progettati e sintetizzati un ampio numero di arilalchil cromeni, cromanoni e cromoni che sono stati saggiati in vitro nei confronti dei sierotipi 14 e 1B di HRV, scelti come rappresentati rispettivamente dei gruppi A e B di HRV. L’estensione dello screening ad altri virus ad RNA conferma la bassa citotossicità e la selettività dell’azione anti-HRV. Sono stati così selezionati i composti più potenti, ad ampio spettro d’azione anti-HRV e con alto indice terapeutico per valutarne il meccanismo d’azione. I risultati ottenuti sia sulla particella virale che sulla moltiplicazione virale suggeriscono che tutti i composti selezionati si comportano da capsid-binder, interferendo con le prime fasi dell’infezione virale, ma mentre l’(E)-3-stiril-2H-cromene agisce sull’adsorbimento del virus al recettore cellulare gli altri composti studiati non interferiscono in questa fase ma solo sul processo di uncoating. Il risultato è di notevole interesse dal momento che l’utilizzo di combinazioni di farmaci che agiscono su fasi successive della replicazione virale potrebbe essere utile per superare il problema delle mutazioni virali che rendono rapidamente inefficace la monoterapia
