Anti-Structure and Decompose:The Multiple Genders of Queer Tango in Buenos Aires
Tango Dancing, as an important part of cultural elements in Argentina, is originated from Buenos Aires at the end of 19 century. Surveying the history of tango dancing, we could get the picture of modern political and historical development at Argentina. In 1983, after the military dictatorship had collapsed and democratic elections were held, the expectations of lesbian and gay movement had grown. In 1990s, at the same time when many activists and communities flourished, LGBTQ who were interested in tango gradually had their milonga from private meeting to public sphere, which was the forerunner of queer tango, called “gay milonga”.
The most important difference from queer tango and traditional tango is that we could change roles between leader and follower freely when dancing tango. This thesis considers the queer tango and festival of Buenos Aires as the ritual process, inspired by the theory of gender performativity from Butler, and discusses how gender and sexuality are transformed, floated and reformulated between the structure and anti-structure. The author finds out, the agency from the anti-structure of queer tango could decompose the social structure.
Otherwise, against the patriarchy and heterosexual hegemony, differing from the fixed binary opposition in traditional tango, queer tango offers a kind of dance which is more equal and allows tanguero/a to discover more possibilities of multiple gender practices in tango dancing. Queer tango not only offers LGBTQ milonga for tango dancing, but also allows men-women to realize the gender performativity from being leader or follower, which could improve the sensibility between traditional tango dancers
Extending the stable energy diagram of rotating Bose-Einstein condensates
The rotating Bose-Einstein condensates describe the quantum state of dilute atomic gases imposed by a laser beam rotating with an angular velocity applied to the magnetic trap. Its stable energy diagram can be formulated as a cost parameterized optimization problem. When the parameter is fixed, various optimization algorithms have been well developed to find a local optimal solution. However, applying these methods for a large number of given parameters is difficult to determine the end points of the maximal parameterized interval. Even worse, this exhausted approach may miss some critical optimal solutions especially when multi-stable regions exist. In this thesis, we propose a procedure that combines the continuation method and the gradient flow method to track local optimal curves for larger angular velocity
Image classification via successive core tensor selection procedure
In the field of artificial intelligence, high-order tensor data have been studied and analyzed, such as the automated optical inspection and MRI. Therefore, tensor decompositions and classification algorithms have become an important research topic.
In a traditional neural network or machine learning method, the classification algorithm inputs training data in the form of vectors, and the trained model can identify and classify the testing data. In order to conform the input constraints, high-order tensor data are often expanded into high-dimensional vectors. However, it also leads to the loss of spatially related information adjacent to different orders, thus damages the performance of the classification.
This thesis proposes a classification model combining non-negative Tucker decomposition and high-order tensors principal component analysis, and extracts feature core tensors successively to improve the accuracy of classification. Comparing with to neural network classifiers, we replace affine transformations with tensor transformations, which optimizes tensor projections to avoid missing information representing the spatial relationships in different orders, so that it extracts more complete features. For signal processing and medical image fields, data will lose its physical significance at negative values. So many non-negative decomposition and analysis methods have also become important research issues. The non-negative Tucker decomposition referred in this paper is one of them, and it is also one of the classic high-order extensions of non-negative matrix factorization. In the classification model, non-negative Tucker decomposition can not only maintain the non-negative physical meaning, but also can ignore the difference between same class, which makes the classification accuracy increase.
This study explores the computational time cost and classification accuracy of the model. In the experiment of image recognition, the training time of the high-order tensor principal component analysis was reduced to half after combining non-negative Tucker decomposition. In terms of accuracy, the smaller the number of training data, the more pronounced the lead of our model is

On the Emancipation of the Lower Orders by the Yung-chêng Emperor
In the early period of the Ch'ing (清) dynasty, there lived several kinds of persons of inferior social status, called Yueh-hu (樂戶), To-min (墮民), Kai-hu (丐戶), Chiu-hsing-yu-hu (九姓漁戶), Tan-hu (蜑戶), Liao-min (寮民), P'eng-min (棚民), Pang-tang (伴儅) and Shih-p'u (世僕). One of the most important policies of the Yung-cheng emperor was their emancipation. The author tries to uncover the details of these reforms
A Study of the "Man-chiang-hung" tz'u attributed to Yueh Fei
The "Man-chiang-hung" tz'u (song words) under discussion has been attributed to the Sung general Yüeh Fei for several hundred years. Full of patriotic sentiments, this tz'u has exerted considerable influence upon the Chinese people, especially during the time of their resistance against foreign invasions. As a patriotic poem, it deserves high esteem. The attribution of the authorship to Yüeh Fei, however, is unreliable. In his Ssu-k'u t'i-yao pien-cheng 四庫提要辨證, the late Professor Yü Chia-hsi 余嘉錫 has raised doubts concerning the authorship. His arguments against the attribution are (1) that Yüeh Fei's son Lin 霖 and grandson K'o 珂, who did their best to collect Fei's writings, did not seem to know the existence of the tz'u at all, and (2) that it first appeared only in a compilation dated 1536 without mentioning its sources. In this article, the author points out an internal evidence against the attribution. The tz'u mentions the place name Ho-lan-shan 賀蘭山, which was located to the north-west belonging to the Hsi-Hsia, and was not in the direction of the Jurchens who were the enemy of Sung. The place name cannot be considered a historical allusion because it does not appear often in earlier literature. In Ming times, however, it was an important place on the frontier bordering on the Tartars (Mongols). Actually, a major victory was won by the Ming general Wang Yüeh 王越 against the Tartars at Ho-lan-shan in 1498. Therefore, it was a place name most meaningful to the people and it featured in the literature of several writers at the time. According to tradition, the tz'u attributed Yüeh Fei was first carved on stone in 1502. This reveals the likely date of its authorship, namely, sometime between 1457 and 1502, 1547 being the date when the Tartars began to make trouble again on the Ming frontier. Furthermore, in a drama on Yueh Fei attributed to an unknown Yüan author, one finds no references to this tz'u. On the other hand, a certain Ming drama on Yüeh Fei is full of quotations from this piece. This also supports the theory that it was by a Ming author
On the classification of the Chinese script
This dissertation examines the seemingly intractable controversies on the classification of the Chinese script from broader linguistic perspectives, delves into the reasons for the controversies, and provides a theoretical exposition and various pieces of empirical evidence for the argument that the Chinese script should be classified as a morphemic system of writing, as opposed to a syllabic or a morphosyllabic system of writing.Specifically, it is found that the controversies on the classification of the Chinese script are incurred by the establishment of some basic assumptions in the field of writing typology, by incommensurability of terms used in the analyses of the Chinese script and in writing typological studies, and last but not least, by different views toward the nature of the Chinese script.Five chapters are included in the dissertation. Chapter One documents a peculiar case of character simplification attested in the course of the Language Reform in the People's Republic of China and presents a general survey of the controversies, especially the very recent one, on the classification of the Chinese script. Chapters Two and Three provide theoretical preliminaries germane to contemporary writing typological practice--the former dealing with what writing is and the latter with how typological classifications of writing systems are construed. Our argument that the Chinese script should be considered an example of a morphemic system of writing, in which graphs typically strive to make reference to distinct morphemes of the language the script is derived from, is supported by virtue of both a theoretical exposition, viz. Chapter Four, and various empirical observations, especially those concerning the graphic level of binomes (lianmianzi, presented in Chapter Five.Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T14:27:15Z (GMT). Group preserving scheme for three-body orbit
The group preserving schemes are numerical methods to compute the orbit of non-linear dynamical systems. The non-linear dynamical system is converted to an augmented dynamical system, which preserves the group properties for every time increment. The first scheme GPS has the form similar to the first order Euler method with adaptive stepsize. The second scheme GPS2 is capable of depicting the complexity of the dynamical system by computing a simple signum function. We use four periodic Newtonian systems and an irregular system to test the performance of the schemes
The numerical elimination method for univariate polynomial factorization
The univariate polynomial factorization problem is one of the fundamental algebraic problems for a long term. It can become an ill-posed problem by some coefficient perturbations, causing the computer calculation may produce errors or have different results. Whether in factorable or irreducible polynomials, the form of the solution can be determined by knowing and specifying the structure of the polynomial and a given tolerance. Furthermore, we also introduce the numerical elimination method to eliminate some variables of a set of polynomials. Compared with the classical methods, we can find elimination polynomial with lower degree and fewer extraneous factors. We can use numerical elimination method to solve the solution space of our every kind of univariate polynomial structure to identify the factorization structure manifold of factorizable polynomials
