The reasons for researching the works of Yugoslav author Magda Bošan Simin are several: (1) her novel "When the Sour Cherries Bloom" (1958) was probably the first literary representation of the Holocaust written by a woman author in Yugoslavia; (2) Bošan Simin represents the Holocaust in multiple formats (documentary prose, memoir, autobiographical novel); (3) the book "Why They Said Nothing: Mother and Daughter on One and the Same War" (2009, English edition 2015) is a narrative comprised of texts written by both Magda Bošan Simin as a Holocaust survivor and her daughter Nevena Simin as a second-generation Holocaust survivor. The research focuses on Holocaust survivors and their post-Holocaust children, issues of memory in Holocaust representation, types of memory, memory mediation, author’s intentionality, and gender and identity issues. Tema ovog broja: "Balkanske Jevrejke" (the topic of this issue: "Balkan Jewish women")

A calcium-dependent protease as a potential therapeutic target for Wolfram syndrome

Full author list omitted for brevity. For the full list of authors, see article.Wolfram syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by diabetes and neurodegeneration and considered as an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) disease. Despite the underlying importance of ER dysfunction in Wolfram syndrome and the identification of two causative genes, Wolfram syndrome 1 (WFS1) and Wolfram syndrome 2 (WFS2), a molecular mechanism linking the ER to death of neurons and β cells has not been elucidated. Here we implicate calpain 2 in the mechanism of cell death in Wolfram syndrome. Calpain 2 is negatively regulated by WFS2, and elevated activation of calpain 2 by WFS2-knockdown correlates with cell death. Calpain activation is also induced by high cytosolic calcium mediated by the loss of function of WFS1. Calpain hyperactivation is observed in the WFS1 knockout mouse as well as in neural progenitor cells derived from induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells of Wolfram syndrome patients. A small-scale small-molecule screen targeting ER calcium homeostasis reveals that dantrolene can prevent cell death in neural progenitor cells derived from Wolfram syndrome iPS cells. Our results demonstrate that calpain and the pathway leading its activation provides potential therapeutic targets for Wolfram syndrome and other ER diseases

The Meanings of Two Dream Symbols in Simin Daneshvar’s Novel Jazireye Sargardani Based on Clarissa Pinkola Estes’ Views

This essay examines two dreams symbols of Simin Daneshvar’s novel JAZIREYE SARGARDANI based on the post-Jungian psychoanalyst Clarissa Pinkola Estes views. Dreams have always been a source of great wonder for human beings. The emergence of modern psychology opened a new era of discussion about the meanings of dreams images. Jung and his followers, with their great emphasis on the importance of dreams, caused an unprecedented expansion of interest in the topic and established a strong connection with the field of literary criticism. The literature of the past one hundred years of Iran and the world was affected by these developments and witnessed the increase of the entry of all kinds of dreams into literary creations. Simin Daneshvar is one of the writers who has used abundantly of dream technique in her stories. Despite the high frequency of dreams in Daneshvar’s stories, their review has been short and few and there is no analysis of them according post-Jungians and Estes views, so this essay is completely new. This article, with descriptive and analytical method and with the aim of achieving a deeper understanding of this novel, examined two main dreams of JAZIREYE SARGARDANI and tried to decode their meanings and show their importance in the overall story line. It is concluded that these archetypal dreams are an integral part of the story and have provided important points regarding the female protagonist character and the course of events.IntroductionThe current investigation examines the dreams of the female protagonist in Simin Daneshvar’s novel, Jazireye Sargardani. Dreams are among the most mysterious and fascinating phenomena in human life and have always been a source of great astonishment. Throughout history, the familiar, unfamiliar, and sometimes enormously bizarre images parading before the dreamer’s eyes have evoked impressions of awe and amazement, leading to a desire to know their meaning. The emergence of modern psychology shed new light on the long-standing discussion about dreams. Since the first years of the 20th century, the widespread release of works by Freud and Jung created a rapid and vast increase in regarding dreams as cardinal and crucial images coming from the depths of the human unconscious mind, requiring attention and interpretation. Dreams and literature are two primary manifestations of the individual and collective unconscious; as a result, all kinds of dreams are present in literary works, and their images imbue these works with a unique sense of mystique and significance. In the Jungian approach, each dream image carries information about the inner and outer life of the dreamer; therefore, Jungian and post-Jungian analysts have based their work on deep dream analysis. Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés is one of the post-Jungian psychoanalysts who has deeply explored women’s dream images and has extensively written and spoken on this subject. Estés has given new and unprecedented dimensions to the analysis of women’s dreams, defining their categories and constantly adding new ones.Based on Estés’s views, the present research investigates the symbolic meaning of two main dreams in Jazireye Sargardani, both of which belong to Hasti, the main female character of the novel. Literature ReviewAlthough many studies have been conducted on Simin Daneshvar’s novel Jazireye Sargardani (The Wandering Island), none of them specifically focuses on the analysis of its dreams. However, some research has been carried out on this novel, primarily from other aspects. A few works relevant to this study include:“A Reflection on Mourning in Jazireye Sargardani” (1986) by Hoora Yavari, in which she has also discussed the dreams of Zari, the female protagonist of Suvashun; Simin Daneshvar: A Post-modern Sharhrzad by Hossein Payandeh (2002), in which he mentions the dreams in Jazireye Sargardani and Sarban Sargardan novels; “Transformation of Female Characters in Simin Daneshvar’s Works” (2015) by Bita Ghanbari, Morteza Mohseni, and Amin Daeezadeh Jelodar, in which the role of dreams in the transformation of Hasti (the female protagonist of Jazireye Sargardani) is discussed; Three Interpretations of Jazireye Sargardani Novel by Ibrahim Ranjbar (2019), which includes a more expansive discussion of Hasti’s dreams; and Examining Simin Daneshvar’s Stories (a doctoral dissertation, 2011) by Ibrahim Khalil Hooman, which has also looked at some of their dreams.Only one article, “Examination of Dream Symbols in Simin Daneshvar's Three Short Stories Based on Clarissa Pinkola Estes’s Views (Border and Mask, Ask the Migratory Birds, and Savaki)” (2023) by Simin Movahed, conducted with the post-Jungian approach, deals with the dreams in Daneshvar’s stories. Therefore, the current study, which endeavors to unravel the meanings of the two main dreams of Jazireye Sargardani to provide a richer understanding of the novel, is unique and new. MethodologyThe objective of this research is to investigate the meaning of the main symbols in the dream images in Jazireye Sargardani through a descriptive-analytical approach, which involves the collection of library data. The ultimate objective is to develop a more comprehensive and multifaceted comprehension of the two main dreams. The data collection tool consists of authentic literature in the field of Jungian psychology and archetypes, as well as libraries and documents. ConclusionThe objective of this research was to develop a more comprehensive and nuanced comprehension of the dream symbols in Simin Daneshvar’s novel Jazireye Sargardani. The analysis, which was conducted using a Jungian psychology approach, demonstrated the significant influence of the female protagonist’s dreams on her dramatic inner transformation. The results indicated that the author was able to demonstrate the transformation of Hasti Noorian through the great impact of the archetypal and mystical images of the first and final dream of the story, in conjunction with other events, by utilizing a vast spectrum of symbols. These two dreams—the first one a scary nightmare and the second one a bearer of good tidings—contain a number of archetypal symbols which are entirely opposite, thereby characterizing Hasti’s transformation from a vulnerable and uncertain girl to a strong and confident woman by the conclusion of the narrative. Now she has accomplished a rebirth and has achieved the self-esteem to live her own desired life. Therefore, Hasti’s dream symbols, in their capacity as permanent, powerful carriers of energy, have facilitated the emergence of the Self archetype in her psyche. The other main archetypes are individuation, the Heroine, and rebirth. All these archetypes are clearly manifested in Hasti’s dreams, paving her way to a new and brighter life

Emerging forms of Family in Iran and its Challenges Abbasali Yazdani[1]  ,  Simin Dousti[2] Received: 18/11/2016              Accepted: 11/04/2017   Abstract Family is assumed to be a primary institution in human society. Structure and functions of this social unit have been evolving. However, social scientists believe the changes it has been facing during the recent years are different, because they go beyond structure and now the meaning of family is somehow changing. Many policymakers and scholars are seriously concerned about the way people see and preserve traditional views to this sacred institution. Others see this as a natural trend and believe that the world has been completely revolutionized and mankind is trying to build a new form of family, appropriate to the modern time in the new millennium. In this article we tried to articulate six important challenges of the unit of family. Then, we addressed responses of Iran’s society to them. To do that, we reviewed related documents and statistics as well as official definitions of the family in different countries. Iran has a relatively traditional, religious society and thus resistant to big changes in this area. But many questions have risen particularly for young people and proper responses must be provided. So, we need to negotiate via intergenerational dialogue. It appears that we are not well-prepared for these challenges. Keywords: Family Forms, Family Evolution, Emerging Family, Iranian Family [1]. The Gal family

    No full text
Knjiga "Porodica Gal" Magde Simin predstavlja dirljivu i dokumentaristički utemeljenu pripovest o jevrejskoj porodici iz Vojvodine, čija sudbina osvetljava širi kontekst stradanja, opstanka i identiteta tokom burnih istorijskih previranja 20. veka. "Porodica Gal" je važan doprinos lokalnoj istoriji, ali i univerzalna priča o ljubavi, gubitku i ljudskoj istrajnosti."The Gal Family" by Magda Simin is a touching, documentary-style narrative about a Jewish family from Vojvodina, reflecting the broader themes of suffering, survival, and identity amid the turbulent events of the 20th century. Through the story of the Gal family members, the author carefully reconstructs their daily lives, family bonds, cultural customs, and the tragedy of the Holocaust, drawing on archival materials, photographs, testimonies, and personal memories. This work serves as both a tribute to those who were lost and an act of remembrance that contributes to the culture of memory and the preservation of Jewish heritage in Serbia. "The Gal Family" makes a significant contribution to local history and remains a universal story of love, loss, and human resilience.Biblioteka Dokument

    No full text
The availability of high-quality benchmark datasets is an important prerequisite for research and education in the cyber security domain. Datasets from realistic systems offer a platform for researchers to develop and test novel models and algorithms. Such datasets also offer students opportunities for active and project-centric learning. In this paper, we describe six publicly available datasets from the domain of Industrial Control Systems (ICS). Five of these datasets are obtained through experiments conducted in the context of operational ICS while the sixth is obtained from a widely used simulation tool, namely EPANET, for large scale water distribution networks. This paper presents two studies on the use of the datasets. The first study uses the dataset from a live water treatment plant. This study leads to a novel and explainable anomaly detection method based upon Timed Automata and Bayesian Networks. The study conducted in the context of education made use of the water distribution network dataset in a graduate course on cyber data analytics. Through an assignment, students explored the effectiveness of various methods for anomaly detection. Research outcomes and the success of the course indicate an appreciation in the research community and positive learning experience in education.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Cyber SecurityNetwork Architectures and Service

Examining the Opinions and Thoughts of Simin Behbahani about Iran's Literary Past

    No full text
IntroductionThe confrontation between tradition and innovation in contemporary times caused severe friction between traditionalists and modernists. These confrontations, which were somewhat natural and inevitably existed throughout history, contain benefits and harms that need to be analyzed with the passage of time and the fading of those years. Reviewing those opinions can in turn shed light on our literature in general and literary criticism in particular. Criticisms and opinions of traditionalists and modernists were sometimes mixed with extreme prejudices and unnecessary rejections and denials and sometimes had signs of reality. In any case, the reviews and comments of contemporary poets about ancient literature have always been worth studying. Some tried to destroy Iran's past literature to highlight their innovations, and on the other hand, poets who were fond of classical literature tried to deny new poetic innovations - such as Nima's poetry. Among these two spectrums, there were poets who were both attached to tradition and striving for innovation. In the meantime, it is important to find people who have judged literary works regardless of unnecessary prejudices, which can be a model for fair, scientific criticism and free from false factions in the contemporary era. Simin Behbahani is one of these people who, in addition to being proficient in the field of poetry writing in various formats (especially in the field of ghazal, she has been given the title of “Ghazal’s Nima” (Haqshenas, 1991: 153)), is one of the poets whose opinions and thoughts about classical poetry contain valuable and important points which can be used as a model in the practical criticism of poetry. Based on this, considering the importance of the topic, the main issue of the current research is to investigate Simin's views on Iran's literary past. For this purpose, Simin Behbahani's books, interviews, notes, and conversations have been examined and analyzed in order to present and explain her arguments, opinions, and thoughts about classical poetry.  Literature ReviewAs far as the author has searched, there has been no research evaluating Simin Behbahani's view of Iran's literary past. In some books, references have been made to Simin's critical personage. Ahmad Abu Mahboob (2008) discussed this feature in the book Green Maple Cradle, but he did not investigate her opinions about Iranian classical poetry. Kamyar Abedi (2000) made a brief reference to Simin's literary reflections in his book Singing Ghazal. He also mentioned the power of Simin's analysis in the book Simin Behbahani, Poet and Civil Struggler (2018), which is a rewrite and a new edition of the book Singing Ghazal in which he mainly pays attention to Simin's opinions about contemporary poets. In Simin's festschrift titled A Woman with a Flower Skirt (2004), some notes briefly mention Simin's knowledge and literary studies. Reviewing the articles shows that most of the published articles have been written about the form and content of her poetry, and they are not in line with the topic under discussion. Only in one or two articles are there references to the discussion we are looking for: In the article “The Contexts and Signs of Simin Behbahani's Familiarity with Ferdowsi's Shahnameh and How She was Influenced by It”, Ghodratollah Zarouni (2023) investigates Simin's familiarity with the Shahnameh and its influence on her. In the article “Poetics Conceptions of Forough Farrokhzad and Simin Behbahani; Textual and Metatextual”, Parsa Yaqoubi et al. (2019), have investigated the opinions of Forough Farrokhzad and Simin Behbahani about what poetry is, who is a poet, etc; but they have not engaged with the subject we are discussing. In general, none of the published works have investigated and classified her views on Iran's literary past. Methodology In this research, with an analytical-critical approach, an attempt has been made to examine and analyze the opinions and thoughts of Simin Behbahani about Iran's literary past. To achieve this goal, discussions, notes, and works related to this issue have been studied and the desired samples extracted, examined, and analyzed.  DiscussionIn the current research, an attempt has been made to extract, categorize, and analyze Simin Behbahani’s views on the literary past of Iran by examining all available sources about her. Simin Behbahani is one of the prominent and innovative poets of contemporary times who, unlike some contemporary poets who considered classical literature an obstacle to their innovations and tried to destroy it with their opinions, did not consider tradition and classical literature to be an obstacle to innovation. She believed that disconnecting contemporary poets from the traditions and literary past of Iran is ignoring the linguistic, cultural, and literary capacities of the past, and without those supports and roots, no poet can create a lasting work. Due to living in a scientific and cultural atmosphere and the special conditions of her life, which were discussed in the introduction of the article, Simin knew the past literature of Iran well and was familiar with the opinions and views of prominent contemporary researchers and writers. For this reason, her opinions and views were the result of a mature and cultured mentality that was mixed with poetic taste and talent. The value of Simin's opinions about classical poetry shows itself more when it becomes clear that these opinions and viewpoints are the result of deep reading of classical texts and reflection on them, not just opinions based on prejudice and glimpses without support. It is true that Simin's interpretations and criticisms also take on a tasteful color in some cases, but these analyses originated from a matured taste whose interpretations are based on the atmosphere that governs the works. Simin's criticisms and analyses of classical works sometimes take into consideration the stylistic aspects of other periods of Persian literature, which is very valuable in its own way and shows the scope of Simin's studies in Persian literature in general.  ConclusionIn general, Simin's view of Iran's literary past is moderate and accompanied by praise and respect. She always praises Iran's literary heroes and their works and points out the need to connect with the literature of the past and make use of it. Along with these praises, she also lists some issues that hinder innovation, including the need to use a new meter and express the political and social issues of the poet's time, something that, in Simin's opinion, has not been paid much attention to in some past periods. Since Simin came from the heart of the poetry institution and the community of poets, her opinions and evaluations can be useful both for the academic community and a light for contemporary young poets, because she is one of the pioneers in the field of transformation in modern sonnet who still has many followers. In the end, Simin, whether in the field of criticism and opinion or the field of poetry and creativity, has almost never separated from the tradition, and at the same time, she has not remained in the tradition; rather, based on it, she has built her theories and achieved innovation in the field of poetry
