Full text is available to authenticated members of The University of Auckland only.I investigate the determinants for Chinese private companies to list in either the U.S. or HK during period of 2000 to 2014. Chinese private companies with higher asset growth, lower leverage, classified as high-tech companies, with negative earnings before listing, and with venture capitalists supporting them are more likely to list in the U.S. HK IPO issuers are generally larger than U.S. IPO issuers in terms of pre-listing total assets. In addition, Chinese private companies are more likely to list where they have a better information environment that is measured by analyst coverage and the number of recent IPOs in the same industry. Subsequent to the listing event, Chinese private companies listed in both the U.S. and HK experience a significant drop in operating performance measures one, two, and three years after the IPO year. Some of the operating performance measures of the Chinese private companies that are listed in the U.S. decline significantly more than those listed in HK. In terms of stock performance, Chinese private companies listed in the U.S. significantly underperform their matching firms one, two, and three years after the IPO year, while Chinese private companies listed in HK only exhibit underperformance in the first year after IPO

Background: The changes of circadian rhythm are very common in senior adults, which can lead to decreased quality of life and jeopardize the brain health in the long run. Among all the types of sleep disturbances, poor sleep quality, as a modifiable condition, can greatly affect the daily activities, cognitive functions, quality of life, and even be implicated as a key potential contributing factor in the development of accelerated cognitive decline and prodromal dementia. Consequently, research efforts to understand, and thus potentially model, the effects of sleep quality on cognition and brain during ageing are of great pragmatic values. Methods: The Hong Kong Cohort of Abnormal Sleep in Ageing Population (HK-ASAP) project is a prospective cohort study recruiting 244 older adults with sleep disturbances. The HK-ASAP study plans to measure sleep quality, brain reserve and cognition at baseline and 2 years. Subjective sleep quality will be assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Global cognition and domain-specific cognitive functions will be assessed by a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. High-resolution structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data will be acquired and used to quantify the brain reserve, including gray matter volume, cortical thickness, folding and brain age matrices. Saliva samples will be collected for measuring the levels of Aβ40 and Aβ42. Using the data, we will estimate and compare the sleep quality and its associations with cognition, Aβ, and brain reserve in senior adults. Discussion: The bidirectional relationship between sleep quality and cognitive impairments in late adulthood presents an urgent need to understand how poor sleep quality affects cognition and its potential relationship to brain reserve and neuropathological factors. The HK-ASAP study will be a valuable resource for both epidemiological and clinical research, as it will provide fundamental information to identify at-risk individuals. Results from the HK-ASAP study will enable to develop interventions to improve the sleep quality, cognition and healthy longevity in old adults

Background: Although C-reactive protein (CRP) is significantly increased in patients with diabetic nephropathy, whether CRP exerts direct proinflammatory effects on human renal tubular epithelial cells (HK-2 cells) is still unclear. Methods: HK-2 cells were incubated with purified CRP at clinically relevant concentrations (0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 mu g/ml). The protein and transcript levels of thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were determined by ELISA and RT-PCR. Phosphorylation of p38MAPK was investigated through Western blot analysis in HK-2 cells induced by CRP. The activation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappa B) was studied via EMSA. A specific p38MAPK inhibitor (SB203580) and an NF-kappa B inhibitor (PDTC; pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate) were used to analyze the signal transduction in CRP induction. To explore the direct or indirect role of CRP in HK-2 cells, IL-6 or TSP-1 antibodies were used. The expression of IL-6, TSP-1 and transforming growth factor-beta(1) (TGF-beta(1)) were determined through Western blot analysis in HK-2 cells. Results: In HK-2 cells, purified CRP significantly induced protein release and mRNA expression of IL-6 and TSP-1 in a dose- and time-dependent manner. TGF-beta(1) protein was overexpressed in HK-2 cells induced by CRP, which cannot be inhibited by IL-6 or TSP-1 antibodies. CRP triggered phosphorylation of p38MAPK and activation of NF-kappa B-mediated signal transduction. SB203580 (5 mu m) and PDTC (50 mu m) efficiently suppressed those effects of CRP in HK-2 cells. Conclusions: CRP induces IL-6 and TSP-1 protein release and mRNA expression from HK-2 cells via activation of the p38MAPK and NF-kappa B signaling pathways and TGE-beta(1) was highly expressed in HK-2 cells, suggesting that CRP plays an important role in the propagation and prolongation of inflammation in renal fibrosis. No full text
Increased glycolysis is a key characteristic of malignant cells that contributes to their high proliferation rates and ability to develop drug resistance. The glycolysis rate-limiting enzyme hexokinase II (HK II) is overexpressed in most tumor cells and significantly affects tumor development. This paper examines the structure of HK II and the specific biological factors that influence its role in tumor development, as well as the potential of HK II inhibitors in antitumor therapy. Furthermore, we identify and discuss the inhibitors of HK II that have been reported in the literature
