Mixed collocation methods for y” = f(x , y)
The second-order initial value problem y" = f(x,y), y(x(_0)) = y(_0), y'(x(_0)) = z(_0) which does not contain the first derivative explicitly and where the solution is oscillatory has been of great interest for many years. Our aim is to construct numerical methods which are tuned to act efficiently on strongly oscillating functions. The frequencies involved determine the oscillatory character of the function and as the frequencies approach zero, the classical methods are obtained. The exponential- fitting tool has become increasingly popular as it is specially tailored for oscillating functions. Many classes of methods have been used with exponential-fitting and this will be discussed in more detail in the thesis. Collocation methods are considered for which the basis functions are combinations of polynomial and trigonometric terms. The resulting methods can be regarded as Runge-Kutta-Nyström methods with steplength dependent coefficients. We show how order conditions may be obtained, investigate the stability and other properties of particular methods and present some numerical results
Low power electronic system for tactile sensory feedback for prosthetics
This paper presents a portable, low power electronic system for tactile sensory feedback for prosthetics. The system provides a prototype based on commercial off-the-shelf components having a wireless portable interface electronics and an array of 32 tactile sensors. The proposed prototype demonstrates to be able to transmit the touched signals with low power energy consumption achieving a battery lifetime of about 22 hours. Experimental results validate the correct functionality of the proposed prototype when different input stimuli have been tested. The proposed system overcomes similar state-of-the-art solutions having higher number of input channels featuring low power and real time operation. Positive storm effects in the dayside polar ionospheric F-region observed by EISCAT and ESR during the magnetic storm of 15 May 1997
International audienceEISCAT/ESR radar data and in situ FAST and POLAR satellite observations are coordinately analyzed to investigate positive ionospheric storm effects in the dayside upper F-region in both the polar cap and the auroral oval during the magnetic storm of 15 May 1997. An ionization enhancement, lasting for about 2.5 h, appeared first over the EISCAT site around magnetic noon; about one hour later, a similar ionization enhancement was also seen over ESR. During the concerned time period ion energy spectra measured on board FAST show clearly continuous energy-latitude dispersion when the satellite passed by over the EISCAT latitude. This implies that EISCAT was located under the polar cusp region which was highly active, and expanded greatly equatorwards due to magnetopause reconnections during long-lasting southward IMF. Simultaneously, soft particles of the magnetosheath precipitated into the F-region ionosphere and caused the positive storm effects over EISCAT. The coincident increase in electron temperature at EISCAT gives additional evidence for soft particle precipitation. Consistently, POLAR UV images show strong dayside aurora extending to as low as 62° N magnetic latitude. The ionization enhancement over ESR, however, seems not to be caused by local particle precipitation, evidenced by a lack of enhanced electron temperature. The observed plasma convection velocity and data-fitted convection patterns by AMIE suggested that it is likely to be a polar patch originating from the cusp region and traveling to the ESR site

A low loss (4.5dB/km) 37-cell core HC-PBGF is reported for the first time. Detailed modal analysis using time of flight and S2 techniques, and error-free 40Gbit/s single mode data transmission are presented
A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1
Spectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1
The effect of degassing on morphology and space charge
It is believed that space charge buildup in cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation is the main cause for premature failure of underground power cables. The space charge activities in XLPE depend on many factors such as additives, material treatment, ambient temperature, insulator/electrode interface, etc. Degassing is one of the material treatment process commonly employ in cable manufacturing to improve insulation performance. In this paper, investigation on the effect of degassing period has on the morphology and space charge was carried out. Planar XLPE samples of the same composite were subjected to different degassing time. A Turbo-Detection Aided Serially Concatenated MPEG-4/TCM Videophone Transceiver
A Turbo-detection aided serially concatenated inner Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM) scheme is combined with four different outer codes, namely with a Reversible Variable Length Code (RVLC), a Non-Systematic Convolutional (NSC) code a Recursive Systematic Convolutional (RSC) code or a Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) code. These four outer constituent codes are comparatively studied in the context of an MPEG4 videophone transceiver. These serially concatenated schemes are also compared to a stand-alone LDPC coded MPEG4 videophone system at the same effective overall coding rate. The performance of the proposed schemes is evaluated when communicating over uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels. It was found that the serially concatenated TCM-NSC scheme was the most attractive one in terms of coding gain and decoding complexity among all the schemes considered in the context of the MPEG4 videophone transceiver. By contrast, the serially concatenated TCM-RSC scheme was found to attain the highest iteration gain among the schemes considered
