Diagnosing aerosols in extrasolar giant planets with cross-correlation function of water bands

    No full text
Transmission spectroscopy with ground-based, high-resolution instruments provides key insight into the composition of exoplanetary atmospheres. Molecules such as water and carbon monoxide have been unambiguously identified in hot gas giants through cross-correlation techniques. A maximum in the cross-correlation function (CCF) is found when the molecular absorption lines in a binary mask or model template match those contained in the planet. Here, we demonstrate how the CCF method can be used to diagnose broadband spectroscopic features such as scattering by aerosols in high-resolution transit spectra. The idea consists in exploiting the presence of multiple water bands from the optical to the near-infrared. We have produced a set of models of a typical hot Jupiter spanning various conditions of temperature and aerosol coverage. We demonstrate that comparing the CCFs of individual water bands for the models constrains the presence and the properties of the aerosol layers. The contrast difference between the CCFs of two bands can reach ~100 ppm, which could be readily detectable with current or upcoming high-resolution stabilized spectrographs spanning a wide spectral range, such as ESPRESSO, CARMENES, HARPS-N+GIANO, HARPS+NIRPS, SPIRou, or CRIRES+

This contribution proposes the commented translation of the first scene of the play La Tragédie du roi Christophe (The tragedy of King Christophe), by Aimé Césaire. The text was published by the Martinican author in 1963 and staged from 1964 onwards. The story addresses the historical clash between the two Haitian revolutionary leaders, Alexandre Pétion (1770-1818) and Henry Christophe (1767-1820), after the establishment of Haitian independence in 1804. The ex-enslaved Henry Christophe I, self-proclaimed King of Haiti in 1811, stars, in the play, political impasses resulting from the decolonization process, for the constitution of a new free and democratic Haitian state. We chose to translate the scene that announces and illustrates, in the opening of the first Act, the tragic character that permeates the unfolding of events

Formation and structure of the three Neptune-mass planets system around HD 69830

Accepted in AA LettersSince the discovery of the first giant planet outside the solar system in 1995 (Mayor & Queloz 1995), more than 180 extrasolar planets have been discovered. With improving detection capabilities, a new class of planets with masses 5-20 times larger than the Earth, at close distance from their parent star is rapidly emerging. Recently, the first system of three Neptune-mass planets has been discovered around the solar type star HD69830 (Lovis et al. 2006). Here, we present and discuss a possible formation scenario for this planetary system based on a consistent coupling between the extended core accretion model and evolutionary models (Alibert et al. 2005a, Baraffe et al. 2004,2006). We show that the innermost planet formed from an embryo having started inside the iceline is composed essentially of a rocky core surrounded by a tiny gaseous envelope. The two outermost planets started their formation beyond the iceline and, as a consequence, accrete a substantial amount of water ice during their formation. We calculate the present day thermodynamical conditions inside these two latter planets and show that they are made of a rocky core surrounded by a shell of fluid water and a gaseous envelope

A non-isothermal theory for interpreting sodium lines in transmission spectra of exoplanets

    No full text
Copyright © 2015. The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved. We present a theory for interpreting the sodium lines detected in transmission spectra of exoplanetary atmospheres. Previous analyses employed the isothermal approximation and dealt only with the transit radius. By recognizing the absorption depth and the transit radius as being independent observables, we develop a theory for jointly interpreting both quantities, which allows us to infer the temperatures and number densities associated with the sodium lines. We are able to treat a non-isothermal situation with a constant temperature gradient. Our novel diagnostics take the form of simple-to-use algebraic formulae and require measurements of the transit radii (and their corresponding absorption depths) at line center and in the line wing for both sodium lines. We apply our diagnostics to the HARPS data of HD 189733b, confirm the upper atmospheric heating reported by Huitson et al., derive a temperature gradient of 0.4376±0.0154Kkm−1, and find densities ∼1–104 cm−3.Swiss National Science FoundationEuropean Research Counci

Exoplanet Atmospheric Studies At High Spectral Resolution

    No full text
The study of exoplanet atmospheres is essential to understand the formation, evolution and composition of exoplanets. When a planet pass between its host star and an observer, a fraction of the star-light is absorbed by its atmosphere, thus revealing its composition. This thesis focuses on the use of high-resolution spectrographs to extract unambiguously atmospheric signals and learn more about the dynamic and composition of exoplanet atmospheres. Two atmospheric tracers have particularly been studied, the helium triplet and the visible water vapor bands. They provide complementary information on the atmospheric structure. This thesis also explores how instrumental systematics and the Earth contamination impact high-resolution spectra and how it is possible to remove them. Finally, this work describes the construction of atmospheric surveys for state-of-the-art high-resolution spectrographs, such as ESPRESSO and NIRPS. These surveys will provide a robust and statistical view of exoplanet atmospheres
