Finite Element Analysis of Stress Distribution in a Tibial Bone-Anchored Prosthesis During Running
Implant load during running on a transtibial bone anchored prosthesis: a multibody modelling case study
BACKGROUND: Bone anchored prostheses (BAPs) using an osseointegration implant are a promising approach for persons with a transtibial amputation to solve socket-related problems. An additional advantage is the direct load transfer. However, it is unknown if high load/ dynamic activities, such as running, are safe. Mechanical failure of the implant, bone or their connection could result in dangerous situations for the BAP user. In the recent years, osseointegration implants for BAPs performed well in daily living activities such as walking, but limits of mechanical loads are unknown.AIM: The aim of this study was to determine and compare the loads acting on the implant during running and walking performed on a running specific prosthesis (RSP) and a daily use prosthesis (DUP).METHOD: A single unilateral transtibial BAP user using a press-fit osseointegration implant performed walking and running trials with a DUP and a RSP at varying speeds on an instrumented split belt treadmill. Two multi-body models of the participant with the RSP and DUP each were constructed. Kinematics reconstructed from marker data and ground reaction forces were used to compute forces and moments with inverse dynamics. Forces and moments were expressed in a reference frame located at the distal end of the dual cone adapter. The stance phase of individual strides was normalised and averaged.RESULTS: It was found that the forces on the implant in the transverse plane and bending moments about anteroposterior and mediolateral axes were actually smaller during running compared to walking, but axial forces were higher for running. Temporal load distribution was different between DUP and RSP, but magnitudes were similar. The effect of increasing running speed did not increase implant loads substantially, it did substantially increase ground reaction force for the intact limb
The Past and Present of The Importance of Being Earnest
abstract: This thesis is a two-part theatre and literature project on The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. The research component will consist of gathering information from the origins of this play in writing and in production to further understand my knowledge of the time it was written in and how it has been interpreted over the years. The theatrical elements will come as I direct and produce my own production of the play, and compare my research of Wilde's play and past productions to my own directorial decisions in attempt to make a successful student performed play
