Entangled Lives: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds, and Shape Our Futures
Merlin Sheldrake, Biologist, speaker, and New York Times best-selling author. - Thinking about fungi makes the world look different. Most fungi live out of sight, yet make up a massively diverse kingdom of organisms that support and sustain nearly all living systems. Fungi throw our concepts of individuality and even intelligence into question. They can change our minds, heal our bodies, and help remediate environmental disaster. In this talk, Merlin will discuss the ways these extraordinary organisms – and our relationships with them – change our understanding of the planet on which we live, and the ways that we think, feel, and behave.https://scholarworks.boisestate.edu/ideas_of_nature_gallery/1041/thumbnail.jp
Merlin and Nimiane : the unifying force for the national unity of Britain at the waning of the Middle Ages as depicted by an anonymous author of the fifteenth-century "Prose Merlin"
The article analyses a special portrayal of the relationship between Merlin and Nimiane in the English fifteenth-century Prose Merlin. The power couple escapes from their previously distinct and usually dubious renditions to perform a new function that serves the nation-building of a reviving civilization. The political and religious inclinations of the anonymous author are visible in their almost impeccable conduct towards their sovereigns, God, and themselves. The article analyses the unique presentation of the two in the light of the political and social circumstances of the waning of the Middle Ages in Britain and contrasts them with a short analysis of other medieval portrayals of the couple
Some observations on 'relatio' and 'demonstratio' in the Middle Ages: A Metalinguistic Glance at a few Texts od Ockham.
The present contribution deals with some meanings and uses of the terms relatio and demonstratio during the Middle Ages, in a very particular and narrow perspective. Two essential steps for the discussion are proposed: the first part summarises the grammatical observations contained in the Greek and Latin treatises on grammar written between the 2nd and 6th century, whereas the second part discusses two texts and a selection of a few quotations of one particular author, interestingly linked to both the concepts and terms of relatio and demonstratio, relativus and demonstrativus, from different points of view: William of Ockham (henceforth simply Ockham, as he is traditionally called), philosopher, theologian and Franciscan friar, born in 1285 in Ockham and dying in Munich in 1347. The reading of the selected texts, involving some discussion on demonstrative and relative pronouns, seems to suggest that at least two traditions are involved: on the one hand, the philosophical (logical and theological) perspective, mostly based on a long-standing tradition coming from Aristotle, and on the other, the grammatical and metalinguistic heritage, derived from the work of ancient grammarians of the Hellenistic era. This second approach is the focus of the analysis and comments
"Thank me therefore": Social Prestige, Probity and Self-determination of Nymue's character in Malory's "Le Morte Darthur"
In January 1943, Gustave Guillaume published an article entitled: “Is there a deponent in French?”. By using the binomial “analytical voice – synthetic voice”, the author sheds new light on the transformation of the Latin verbal system in French: he isolates a small group of intransitive verbs (such as ‘mourir’, ‘naître’, ‘entrer’, ‘sortir’ etc.) pertaining to the category of Latin deponents, which have formed in French a new synthetic mixed voice, and are a direct legacy of Latin. Since then, the behaviour of intransitive verbs has been an area of some interest for other linguists (cf. split intransitivity). Within the framework of relational grammar, Perlmutter (1978) introduced the Unaccusative Hypothesis, showing that the subject of these verbs has the typical characteristics of an object. On the other hand, semantic approaches have put forward a set of criteria like agentivity and telicity in order to stress the semantic basis of the syntax of unaccusative verbs.
Merlin of Robert Boron and popular culture
Prije same analize odabranog djela opisala sam kratak kritički osvrt Merlinovih proročanstava gledanih od strane povijeno književnih kritičara, te pisaca. Zatim sam opisala život i djelovanje kroz književni opus Roberta de Borona. The purpose of this thesis was with analyze of chosen work, to show the life of the sorcerer Merlin or the counselor of the kings in the historically significant work Grail Book; Merlin and Robert of Boron. Before analyzing the chosen work, I described a brief critical review of Merlin’s prophecies as seen by literary critics and writers. Then I described life and activity through the literary work of Robert de Boron. In addition, I showed the Merlin story described by the author mentioned above, and in this context, I was mentioned the various writers and thinkers like Wace and Geoffroy of Mormounth. After the general description of the novel throughout history, I analyzed Boron’s novel writing style. Through the analysis of the work, which I covered with quotations, I left the feeling of read. In addition, one of the objectives of this study was to understand the general and mystical qualities of Merlin through the work and popular culture of the modern era and inside literature, film art, theater, comic and games to find these situations where it is visible (Merlin presented as a young man, a prince, an old man, an animal, deer, a lover, a counselor). Of course, I described the style of writing used in the selected work with the examples mentioned. I presented the time, places, numbers and descriptions of the different elements used to show the way of life and understanding of relations in the Middle Ages and I drew these situations. In the end, as the conclusion I expressed my opinion on Merlin’s display works through literature, cinema, theater, painting, games and connect all: the past, present and modern times, it’s to say I tried to show Merlin’s position in parallel with lately times
New Critical Perspectives on the U.S. and the Post-WWII Global Economy: Brenner, Harvey, and Pollin
In the current economic crisis, left and progressive political economics has enjoyed renewed attention and credibility, both inside and outside of academia. In this paper, Merlin Chowkwanyun surveysrecent contributions to this literature by Robert Brenner, David Harvey, and Robert Pollin, summarizing key arguments and identifying research questions and heuristics for further inquiry. The author considers how these contributions might help to forge more fruitful dialogue between analyses of social movements and economic structures, too often studied apart. The paper stresses the importance of retaining the robust critical power of the left critique while avoiding the fatalism, sectarianism, and “automatic” theories of social change that have bedeviled the left’s recent past.
