    The Fables: Gustave Moreau

Occasional mention of Gustave Moreau and sample offerings of specific work of his did not prepare me for this revelation of the extent of his work on fables. Moreau created some 64 watercolor illustrations of La Fontaine's fables, first exhibited in 1886 and last exhibited in 1906. This present book is the catalogue of a recent exhibit at the Rothschilds' Waddesdon Manor. The book's author, Juliet Carey, was curator of that exhibit. The book, large format (9¾" x 12") and 168 pages long, gives accounts of Moreau's life, including the fable watercolors; of La Fontaine and the fables; and of animal studies by Moreau that prepared for this work. The bulk of the book is then an impressive catalogue featuring a large colored illustration of each of the 35 fables in the exhibit, starting with "Allegory of Fable," in which fable rides on a chimaera. Among the best, for me, are WS; "The Monkey and the Dolphin"; "Death and the Woodcutter," in which death is a seductive woman; and FK. The book's last pictorial section is a brief account of Felix Bracquemond's black and white etchings based on Moreau's fables. Of the many critical comments included here, the most helpful for me is that Moreau "explored states of consciousness." Moreau achieved early fame with popular works exploring mythology, e.g., "Oedipus and the Sphinx." This book is a new treasure in the collection!Juliet Care

This paper was published by Nova Alexandria in 2001 as an introductory text to the translation in Portuguese o f Madame Bovary. The notes included in the publication and the translation itself were made by this author. It recovers the trajectory of Gustave Flaubert up to the publication of Madame Bovary in 1857. Nuances found in Flaubert’s text are presented as a way to characterize it as the first modern novel. In fact, the work represents a breakthrough in the way of writing a novel and from that point on, the novel is not anymore a mere story, but it is above all style. Keywords: Madame Bovary. Gustave Flaubert. Novel. Realism. French Literature.

The author, a professional theologian, studies the properly theological aspects of Teilhard's thought, describing, through his intellectual effort, the religious works in which are united the certainties of a faith which remained indestructible. According to the author. Teilhard appears as a "prophet" who raises the importune and bénéficient cry of the organic and cosmic splendors of the Pauline doctrine of Christ, head of ail things, and who renders him perceptible for the contemporary world in prodigiously renewed dimensions. After presenting the vision of the universal Christ developed by Teilhard, the author shows how this vision illuminates several important elements of the Christian mystery, such as the création, the Eucharist and the parousia.Martelet Gustave. [[alternative]]The Researches of Gustave Moreau’s Salome

    No full text
[[abstract]]The French Symbolist Gustave Moreau(1826-1898)created a lot of Salomes in his life. They contain plenty of symbolic meanings and the artist’s special thoughts; furthermore, they can reflect the cultural state and trend of the fin-de-siecle. The aim of this dissertation is by way of iconological research, to explore Moreau’s thoughts and esthetic concepts formed in his creating process; and to observe the cultural phenomena of the fin-de-siecle. Besides the iconological method, this dissertation has applied the compared analysis of formal style to introduce the uniqueness and the originality of Moreau’s Salome. As for the variety of documents possibly influencing Moreau’s Salome, this dissertation makes use of the first-hand materials as much as possible in order to find out the real influences. But the most important thing of iconological research is to analyze and explain the iconical inner meanings; this process can help us to resolve the vague symbolic riddles that Moreau had applied. This dissertation also adapts the method of characteristic definition to explore Salome’s symbolic meanings and Moreau’s creating thoughts. At last, this dissertation will mine the treasures of iconical core. That is, the artist’s motivation, characteristics, point of views, values, philosophical and religious concepts , and the environment of the artist’s age related to his creation. From these researches, we can deeply understand the abundance of Moreau’s creating thoughts. Gustave Moreau’s Salome can actually and completely represent the cultural spirit of the fin-de-siecle.

THE FAILURE AND DISILLUSION OF EMMA BOVARY IN HER FRANTIC SEARCH FOR IDEALISTIC LOVE IN GUSTAVE FLAUBERT’S NOVEL “MADAME BOVARY”

A literary work had been created a long time ago before someone found the essence, values and meaning of literature. Moreover, literature works also offer knowledge and profound understanding about human being, world and life. Literary work is suitable to describe the typical aspects or events in reality, including politics, economics, cultures or psychology. Some literary works reveal social problem and offer the reader moral message. Today every fact in our lives is invaded by many immoral flares. Most of us do not realize that when the morals of society are upset, the family is the one who suffers. Dishonesty, unloyalty and adultery become the cause of discordant marriage. Unfortunately, this phenomenon had been increasing from time to time. That kind of phenomenon can be seen in Gustave Flaubert’s novel Madame Bovary. Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880), a French writer was considered by many to be the father of realistic fiction. He was born as the son of prosperous doctor on December 12th 1821 in Rouen, Normandy. Flaubert attended the prestigious College Royal in Rouen, where he received a solid education in literary work. As 2 a young man he was a passionate reader of the work of Johann Wolfgang, Von Goethe of Germany, Lord Byron of England and Francois Chateaubriand and Victor Hugo of France. All of these writers were associated with romanticism, a movement that championed individualism, emotion and imagination. In 1840 he began law studies in Paris but gave it up to write. Flaubert devoted the remainder of his life to literature. The first of Flaubert’s masterpiece was L’education Sentimentale published in 1869. But the most widely read novel was Madame Bovary, published in 1857 and it became the subject of famous legal case. Although both of the author and publisher were prosecuted on the grounds that the novel was immoral, Madame Bovary was generally recognized as one of the French literature masterpieces. Flaubert’s other important novels are Salambo (1863) and The Temptation of Saint Anthony (1874) besides three short stories published as Three Tales and also the unfinished novel, Bouvard et Pecuchet (1881). Madame Bovary is related to the romantically motivated adulteries of a married woman who was overblown by love affairs and ended in her suicide. Emma Bovary, the main character of this novel was deluded by literature. She found that her marriage with Charles Bovary, who was a country doctor less romantic and satisfying than she expected. Charles was not a prince, but a bumbling (dull), aging man. Disgusted, Emma developed a relationship with Leon Dupuis, a young lawyer. She refused to sleep with him but regretted it after he left 3 the town. And then she met Rodolphe Boulanger, a wealthy landowner who seduced Emma to pass the time together. They had a brief passionate affair. When Rodolphe abandoned her, Emma returned to Leon. She was not so shy like she was used to be, this time giving in to their mutual passion. Her affair has an air desperation. She spent her limited funds on trips to visit her lover and love gifts. Emma had become a spendthrift. She went into debt to a draper and notary named Lheureux with a high rate of interest. Without knowledge of her husband, she sold Charles’s property. When their financial situation revealed, she was afraid that her husband would discover her affair. She felt confused and desperate. She ran to the chemists’ shop and asked for some arsenic, she poured the powder and ate it. Soon she laid down and died miserably. Thus, Madame Bovary both depicts and criticizes the inability of the romantic temperament to live in the real world. What makes the novel interesting is that this Gustave Flaubert’s novel tries to present the romantic psychology of Emma and undercuts it with irony at the same time

Jean de La Fontaine's Fables, Volume II

Here is a two-volume presentation in English of Elizur Wright's translation of the full collection of La Fontaine's fables. This second volume contains -- somewhat unusually -- Books VIII through XII. Brown monochrome presentations of Gustave Doré's full-page illustrations are interspersed liberally through the text. As is frequent in present-day Chinese paperbacks, text-page foredges are decorated with an identical repeating pattern and the covers are heavy paper folded back to create a flap. Be careful: the T of C at the beginning of either volume is identical. A buyer like me can easily think that there are two copies of Volume I rather than one copy each of both volumes. As page 385 makes clear, this is Part 2, and Book VIII starts on 387. This is a substantial production. There is a table of some sort on the book's last seven pages, following 717.Language note: EnglishTranslated by Elizur Wrigh
