[Letter fragment] / HWL [Henry Wadsworth Longfellow].
The fragment here may be part of a longer letter. This fragment of a longer letter may be part of a correspondence with a publisher. He mentions substituting "The Seaside and the Fireside" for "The Spanish Student" to make more room. _The Spanish Student_ collection was published in 1843 which may be helpful in dating the letter fragment. Longfellow\u27s early poetry drew on his travels in Europe where he was influenced by German Romanticism; he held a professorship at Harvard as head of modern languages for 18 years. With the publication of works like "The Wreck of the Hesperus" (1841), Evangeline (1847), The Song of Hiawatha (1855), The Courtship of Miles Standish (1858), and "Paul Revere\u27s Ride" (1863), Longfellow\u27s popularity was assured in America and abroad; he also translated the Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri, and in 1884 he was the first American to be commemorated with a memorial bust in Poets\u27 Corner in Westminster Abbey
