Comment on "General Orthogonal Regression Relations between Body-Wave and Moment Magnitudes" by Ranjit Das, H. R. Wason, and M. L. Sharma
Das et al. (2013) describe a modification of the general
orthogonal regression (GOR) method (Fuller, 1987) applied
to the magnitude conversion problem that the same authors
have already published at least twice in other journals (Das
et al., 2012; Wason et al., 2012). Unfortunately, as more exhaustively
discussed in our comment to Wason et al. (2012),
published by the Geophysical Journal International (Gasperini
and Lolli, 2014), some assumptions made by the authors are
wrong and therefore their method has to be rejected

AES, EELS AND XPS STUDY OF ION-INDUCED GAAS AND INP(110) SURFACE AND SUBSURFACE MODIFICATIONS
Surfaces of GaAs and InP(110) single crystals have been modified by ion bombardment at different energies. The modofications induced in the surface and subsurface regions have been investigated by different electron spectroscopies
Changes in adenosine 5'-monophosphate-activated protein kinase as a mechanism of visceral obesity in Cushing's syndrome
OBJECTIVE: Features of the metabolic syndrome such as central obesity with insulin resistance and dyslipidemia are typical signs of Cushing's syndrome and common side effects of prolonged glucocorticoid treatment. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a key regulatory enzyme of lipid and carbohydrate metabolism as well as appetite, is involved in the development of the deleterious metabolic effects of excess glucocorticoids, but no data are available in humans. In the current study, we demonstrate the effect of high glucocorticoid levels on AMPK activity of human adipose tissue samples from patients with Cushing's syndrome. METHODS: AMPK activity and mRNA expression of genes involved in lipid metabolism were assessed in visceral adipose tissue removed at abdominal surgery of 11 patients with Cushing's syndrome, nine sex-, age-, and weight-matched patients with adrenal incidentalomas, and in visceral adipose tissue from four patients with non-endocrine-related abdominal surgery. RESULTS: The patients with Cushing's syndrome exhibited a 70% lower AMPK activity in visceral adipose tissue as compared with both incidentalomas and control patients (P = 0.007 and P > 0.001, respectively). Downstream targets of AMPK fatty acid synthase and phosphoenol-pyruvate carboxykinase were up-regulated in patients with Cushing's syndrome. AMPK activity was inversely correlated with 0900 h serum cortisol and with urinary free cortisol. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that glucocorticoids inhibit AMPK activity in adipose tissue, suggesting a novel mechanism to explain the deposition of visceral adipose tissue and the consequent central obesity observed in patients with iatrogenic or endogenous Cushing's syndrome

The management of dredged materials: the «long and winding road» from waste to resource
Both the dredging operations and the management of dredged materials may have heavy impacts on coastal and marine ecosystems. Dredged materials, in particular, have been considered for a very long time nothing more than a waste meant for disposal. Now the time has come to move from the ‘disposal approach’ to the ‘waste recovery’ or, even better, to the ‘waste can be a non-waste’ ones. Unfortunately, the management of dredged materials is committed to a congeries of rules, which build up a framework of law that appears plainly fragmentary and incoherent. The road is still long (and winding)
THE PROTECTION OF POSIDONIA OCEANICA (L.) DELILE AND THE MANAGEMENT OF ITS BEACH-CAST LEAVES. THE ITALIAN JURIDICAL FRAMEWORK.
The work aims at reconstructing the complex network of rules that, also due to the implementation of obligations accepted at the international and european level, our legal system sets up for the protection of Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile in the sea and for the management of the beach-cast leaves ashore, highlighting the many unsolved, highly problematic knots.
For what concerns the protection in the sea, the laws protecting Posidonia as a species and as a habitat can only apply to clearly defined areas, outside of which the protection needs must be weighed against the other interests at stake – chiefly those related to the economic and social development.
As for the management of beach-cast Posidonia, the few interventions of the state legislator have left over the years a fragmentary and lacking legislative framework, the lacunae of which have been filled by ministerial circulars and guidelines, in a substitute operation that, however valuable, has made even more evident the need of a specific discipline.
The Regions as well have intervened on the subject matter, not only by means of circulars, guidelines and alike, but also through laws. It is the case of the Region of Sardinia, which, with regional law no.1/2020, has tried to introduce some rules aiming at giving priority to on-site preservation or recovery. However, many of these rules did not overcome the scrutiny of the Constitutional Court (Judgment no.86 of 2021).
The latest addition to this framework is Article 5 of Law no.60/2022, the so-called Legge Salvamare (Sea-saving Law), which, once again, appears still far from providing the long-coveted, well-structured rules
Reply to “Comment on ‘Unbiased Estimation of Moment Magnitude from Body‐ and Surface‐Wave Magnitudes’ by R. Das, H. R. Wason, and M. L. Sharma and ‘Comparative Analysis of Regression Methods Used for Seismic Magnitudes Conversions’ by P. Gasperini, B. Lolli, and S. Castellaro” by J. Pujol
We suspect that most criticisms by Pujol (2017,
hereafter, P17) were originated by a misunderstanding of our
article (Gasperini et al., 2015) that the author himself frankly
admits (“Some of the arguments made in the paper were not
completely clear to the present author” p. 11) and maybe
even by a misunderstanding of the textbook of Fuller
(1987). In the following, we will discuss in general the main
P17 criticisms, whereas detailed answers to all of them are
reported in the Appendix.Published548–5514IT. Banche datiJCR Journa
