Hyperparathyroidism in a pregnant woman with previous thyroid carcinoma. Case report and review of the literature
A 29 year old woman, primipara, at 26 weeks' gestation had been undergone, five years before, a total thyroidectomy owing to a mixed papillary-follicular carcinoma of thyroid. After thyroidectomy the patient was placed on suppressive thyroxine treatment. Since she was 22 years old she suffered from recurrent renal colics and cholelithiasis. For these reasons she underwent, at the age of 27, an operation to remove bilateral renal calculi and a cholecystectomy owing to gall-stones. During her pregnancy biochemical determinations revealed slight and persistent hypercalcemia, hypophosphatemia, elevated urine calcium besides elevated serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels. Thus a diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism was taken into consideration. It was considered, but temporarily delayed, the surgical exploration of the neck. A strict clinic overseeing of the patient, which allowed her to carry out the pregnancy happily, was undertaken. Any thyroid carcinoma repercussion on pregnancy was not noted. A left inferior parathyroid adenoma was removed five months after the woman's delivery. The child psychosomatic development, at one year of age, was absolutely normal. A review of the literature indicates that when a pregnancy is complicated by hyperparathyroidism its prognosis is improved by parathyroidectomy, if possible during the second trimester. In patients with asymptomatic hypercalcemia and/or in late pregnancy surgical treatment may be postponed until after delivery. It is also demonstrated that thyroid carcinoma is not aggravated by pregnancy and that the latter can develop without any worry for mother and fetus

Evolution of fatty acids and biogenic amines profile of whole mullet and tuna bottarga during storage at 4°C
The aim of this study was to monitor the fatty acids and biogenic amines (BAs) profiles in mullet (Mugil
Cephalus) and tuna (Thunnus thynnus) roe (bottarga) during storage (0–180 days) at 4 8C. Fatty acids were
analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) as methyl ester derivatives while BAs were investigated using
reverse-phase liquid chromatography (RP-LC) as dansyl derivatives. The content of total fatty acids
decreased with time in mullet bottarga (BM) while in tuna bottarga (BT) the PUFA value showed a slight
decrease up to 30 days followed by an intense reduction after 90 and 180 days. An increasing content of
BAs was observed with time in all investigated samples without reaching hazardous concentrations. In
general, the BAs concentrations were in decreasing order: tyramine, putrescine, cadaverine and
histamine. In BM, phenylethylamine was always present, representing a possible discriminating
compound as it was absent in tuna bottarga at any time of storage. A Pearson correlation matrix showed
that lipid and protein degradation products were strongly and significantly correlated over the
considered storage time implying that lipid oxidation processes are in some way linked to the chemical
production of BAs
Phytochemical analysis and in vitro evaluation of the biological activity against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) of Cedrus libani A. Rich
Cedrus libani are widely used as traditional medicine in Lebanon for treatment of different infection diseases. In the present study we reported the phytochemical composition analyzed by GC-MS of wood essential oil and cones and leaves ethanol extracts. The main components of wood essential oil were himachalol (22.50%), beta-himachalene (21.90%), and alpha-himachalene (10.50%). Leaves ethanol extract was characterized by a high content of germacrene d (29.40%). The same extract obtained from cones essentially contained alpha-pinene (51.0%) and beta-myrcene (13.0%). Moreover, we investigated extracts, essential oil, and identified compounds for their in vitro antiviral activities against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). Cytotoxicity was evaluated by MTT assay in Vero cells. Cones and leaves ethanol extracts exhibited an interesting activity with IC(50) of 0.50 and 0.66mg/ml, respectively, at non-cytotoxic concentration. A comparable activity was found when essential oil was tested (IC(50) of 0.44mg/ml)
Phytochemical analysis and in vitro antiviral activities of the essential oils of seven Lebanon species
The chemical composition of the essential oils of Laurus nobilis, Juniperus oxycedrus ssp. oxycedrus, Thuja orientalis, Cupressus sempervirens ssp. pyramidalis, Pistacia palaestina, Salvia officinalis, and Satureja thymbra was determined by GC/MS analysis. Essential oils have been evaluated for their inhibitory activity against SARS-CoV and HSV-1 replication in vitro by visually scoring of the virus-induced cytopathogenic effect post-infection. L. nobilis oil exerted an interesting activity against SARS-CoV with an IC(50) value of 120 microg/ml and a selectivity index (SI) of 4.16. This oil was characterized by the presence of beta-ocimene, 1,8-cineole, alpha-pinene, and beta-pinene as the main constituents. J. oxycedrus ssp. oxycedrus oil, in which alpha-pinene and beta-myrcene were the major constituents, revealed antiviral activity against HSV-1 with an IC(50) value of 200 microg/ml and a SI of 5
Secondary tumors of the ovary. III. Tumors of the gastrointestinal tract and other sites.
16 cases of secondary ovarian tumors observed from 1977 to 1986, and in which the primary neoplasms involved other organs outside the genital tract or the breast, are studied. The observations concerned 13 metastases of the gastro-intestinal tract cancer (6 typical Krukenberg tumors, 3 "tubular" Krukenberg tumors, and 4 non-Krukenberg tumors), 1 urinary bladder cancer, 1 pancreatic cancer, and 1 tumor of unknown origin (probably an amelanotic melanoma). The histological diagnosis was very difficult in patients with no evidence of the primary malignancy, or in patients in whom the metastases simulate a concomitant primary ovarian tumor. The characteristic histological findings, histochemistry, and immuno histochemistry may suggest a correct diagnosis in most of situations
Antioxidant and antiproliferative activity of Laurus nobilis L. (Lauraceae) leaves and seeds essential oils against K562 human chronic myelogenous leukaemia cells
The antioxidant and antiproliferative activities of the essential oils from Laurus nobilis leaves and seeds in relation to their composition were analysed. The most abundant components of the leaf essential oil were 1,8-cineole, 1-p-menthen-8-ethyl acetate, linalool and sabinene, while the seed oil was characterised by β-ocimene, 1,8-cineole, α-pinene and β-pinene as main constituents. Both seed and leaf essential oils exhibited a scavenging effect on the DPPH radical, with IC(50) values of 66.1 and 53.5 μg mL(-1), respectively. The leaf essential oil showed the strongest antioxidant activity in the β-carotene/linoleic acid system, with an IC(50) value of 35.6 μg mL(-1) after 30 min of incubation. Both leaf and seed oils inhibited proliferation of the K562 tumour cell line with IC(50) values of 95 and 75 μg mL(-1), respectively. The L. nobilis leaf oil showed a percentage of erythroide differentiation of 15% at a concentration of 10 μg mL(-1). A value of 12% was found for the seed essential oil at a concentration of 50 μg mL(-1). When the oils were added to a suboptimal concentration of the commercial drug, cytosine arabinoside, a clear synergic effect was observe
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
