    Intuition as Emergence: Bridging Psychology, Philosophy and Organizational Science

    Accelerating environmental uncertainty and the need to cope with increasingly complex market and social demands, combine to create high value for the intuitive approach to decision-making at the strategic level. Research on intuition suffers from marked fragmentation, due to the existence of disciplinary silos based on diverse, apparently irreconcilable, ontological and epistemological assumptions. Not surprisingly, there is no integrated interdisciplinary framework suitable for a rich account of intuition, contemplating how affect and cognition intertwine in the intuitive process, and how intuition scales up from the individual to collective decision-making. This study contributes to the construction of a broad conceptual framework, suitable for a multi-level account of intuition and for a fruitful dialogue with distant research areas. It critically discusses two mainstream conceptualizations of intuition which claim to be grounded in a cross-disciplinary consensus. Drawing on the complexity paradigm, it then proposes a conceptualization of intuition as emergence. Finally, it explores the theoretical and practical implications

    Teleworking as an eco-innovation for sustainable development: Assessing collective perceptions during COVID-19

    Due to the spread of COVID-19, new challenges and opportunities for business innovation have emerged, including the way work is organized and designed. In particular, pandemic created the conditions for the most extensive mass teleworking experiment in history. While there is a wide literature on the effects of teleworking as a business innovation, mainly from an environmental perspective, there are few studies investigating the public perceptions regarding teleworking and, in particular, studies that draw from social media analyses. Based on these considerations, a big data analysis has been carried out in order to frame the public perceptions about teleworking on Twitter. The six-months sentiment analysis of about 11,000 tweets shows that the ecological value of telework is not perceived by people; surprisingly, in a pandemic context of growing ecological concern, there is no significant evidence of environmental awareness in relation to teleworking. However, the positive and negative concepts which emerge in relation to teleworking and similar terms can be assimilated to the benefits and pitfalls highlighted in the literature, which are related to economic or social sustainability. This has important implications for practice in organizations employing teleworking, which are highlighted in the conclusion, together with the limitations and future research avenues

    The growing turbulence of the external environment has progressively led to the necessity by organizations of exploiting new opportunities provided by data-driven approaches for supporting the even more complex decisionmaking processes. The new digital environment has led to the development and adoption of innovative approaches; also in the urban context which has always been characterized by different, interconnected, and dynamic dimensions. Urban governance models have been enhanced by smart technologies, which act as enablers of advanced services and foster connections between citizens, public and private organizations, and decision-makers. In this context, the objective of this chapter is to examine the role of datadriven approaches in the urban context during the chaotic and high variable circumstances related to the diffusion of the Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). Thanks to the adoption of the co-evolutionary perspective, a cycle in urban governance decision-making approach based on digital technologies is depicted and its contribution for managing the ongoing Covid-19 is traced. The results of the analysis highlight how the data-driven approach supports urban decision-making process and shed light on the co-evolutionary perspective as heuristic device to map the interactions settled in the networks between local governments, data-driven technologies, and citizens. In this sense, this chapter offers interesting insights, potentially capable of generating useful implications for both researchers and professionals in the public sector

    End-of-life management of oil and gas offshore platforms: challenges and opportunities for sustainable decommissioning

    Purpose of the paper: The decommissioning of offshore platforms represents a significant and controversial challenge that has gained attention over the years due to its environmental, social, and economic impact. This work aims to investigate stakeholders’ perceptions regarding the future of offshore platforms and to explore dimensions of sustainability related to decommissioning. Methodology: An analysis was carried out based on two rounds of empirical inquiry, a range of primary data collected through multiple-choice questionnaires and in-depth interviews. Findings: The analysis shows that stakeholders perceive reuse as an opportunity to minimise the impacts according to an environmental, economic, and social perspective. While the multipurpose platform represents an opportunity for the future, it also presents challenges. Research limitations: The study relies only on qualitative analysis techniques and on a limited sample and geographical area. Practical implications: The analysis offers several insights into the decommissioning scenario according to a sustainable and circularity perspective and contributes to the decommissioning debate by providing information about decommissioning programs, stakeholders’ impacts, and future planning considerations.     The growing complexity of urban landscapes due to the Covid-19 and the fast technology evolution make central a rethink of urban governance, in or-der to understand how decision-making processes are boosted by the application of smart technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data analytics. Although there is much evidence that innovative technology is crucial to fight the Covid-19, the analysis of the literature highlights the poor attention paid in the study of the urban governance framework based on emerging technologies during the pandemic. Based on these considerations, the work aims to propose a decision-making support model for the urban local governments. By following a methodological framework based on a Fuzzy Cognitive Map (FCM), a first experimentation has been conducted on a popular social network, Twitter, in reference to an Italian city. The impact analysis through the Fuzzy Cognitive Map suggests that Covid-19 emergency is highlighting the necessity to pay attention to the priorities of local governments: if, from one hand, new efforts are required regarding social welfare and health sector, on the other hand, improvements in air quality in cities during lockdown periods bring out the environmental impacts of anthropogenic activities

    Gender Equity in Hospitals: An Italian case study

    The topic of gender equity is increasingly cited as a goal of health policy despite the rise in the number of female doctors around the world, and attempts to enhance gender awareness have gained prominence. Recently, initiatives to increase gender awareness have been numerous nevertheless, the topic of gender equity in the medical profession has not been adequately assessed. In order to fill this gap, this paper examines the current state of gender equity literature in hospitals, with a systematic literature review on Scopus, and, then, it focuses on an Italian case study to identify the characteristics that obstacle or support gender equity in terms of salary, career, and professionalism. The finding highlighted some reflections regarding the roles in the Italian hospitals and obstacles to gender equity, such as the stereotyped judgments, as well as shed light on new considerations regarding the actions aimed at managing gender disparity in such working environments. This has important implications for practice in health care organizations and human resource management, which are highlighted in conclusion, together with the limitations and future research avenues

    Drilling down the viable system theories in business, management and accounting: A bibliometric review

    The aim of this paper is to trace the scientific landscape (authors, scientific papers, topics most frequently dealt with, relationships between them) of the studies concerning the viable system model (VSM) and the viable system approach (vSa), carried out in the period 1990–2018 within the scientific framework of systems thinking by scholars in business, management and accounting (BMA). The methodology adopted herein is based on a scientometric approach, bibliographic mapping and clustering. The analysis was carried out following a three-step procedure: bibliographic coupling of scientific contributions (153 articles recorded in Scopus in the considered period), co-occurrence of the main author keywords and analysis of co-citations. This paper examines for the first time the entire scientific body of knowledge about viable system theories (VSTs) in BMA areas using recent joint mapping and clustering tools

    Managerial hubristic-behavioral strategy: how to cope with chaotic and uncertain contexts

    Purpose: How can a manager lead an organization or a team in a particularly turbulent time? How can management cope with chaos and uncertainty? Drawing on behavioral strategy theory, this study aims at investigating how hubristic managers can enable organizations to thrive, even over small time periods, in chaotic and uncertain contexts and settings. Design/methodology/approach: This study uses a qualitative methodology to explore the possible positive effects of hubris in a behavioral strategy. In particular, 45 interviews with leaders and followers of particularly high-performing secondary schools have been administered to try to fully understand the origin, process and performance evolution of organizations led by hubristic managers. Findings: The results showed that, in chaotic and uncertain times, hubris can prove to be a trump card for managers in dealing with the pitfalls and uncertainties of the context in which the organization operates. Three major attributes were identified – overconfidence and over-persistence, recklessness and contempt for critical feedback – defining the positive behavioral strategies implemented by hubristic managers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Originality/value: To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to highlight, by means of qualitative methodologies, the positive managerial hubristic-behavioral strategy during turbulent times in the school sector

    Towards a resilient perspective for the future of offshore platforms. Insights from a data driven approach

    Purpose: This study aims to investigate the collective perception regarding the future of offshore platforms and frame the main categories of meanings associated by the community with the investigated phenomenon. Design/methodology/approach: A data driven approach has been conducted. The collection of the peoples’ opinions has been realized on two specific social network communities as follows: Twitter and Instagram. The text mining processes carried out a sentiment and a cluster analysis. Findings: The sentiment analysis of the most frequent words has been shown. The following four main homogeneous categories of words are emerged in relation to the decommissioning of offshore platforms: technological areas, green governance (GG), circular economy and socio-economic sphere. Research limitations/implications: The alternative use of the offshore platforms, including tourism initiatives, aquaculture, alternative energy generation, hydrogen storage and environmental research, could improve the resilience of communities by offering the development of new jobs and the growth of local and innovative green businesses. Practical implications: The adoption of a circular model and GG initiatives aims to limit the input of resources and energy, minimize waste and losses, adopt a sustainable approach and realize new social and territorial value. Originality/value: The analysis underlines the importance to adopt a systems perspective, which takes into account the social, economic and environmental system as a whole, the different phenomena that occur and the variety of categories of stakeholders, from users to local governments that participate in the territorial development
