Firm-level productivity and international expansion of firms from the Lodz Voivodeship

    No full text
The paper investigates the link between firm-level productivity and internationalization (through exports, imports and FDI) in the Lodz Voivodeship, Poland. Two hypotheses have been tested –self-selection and learning by internationalization. It has been found that productivity may affect import and FDI decisions of firms, while there is no evidence of such an effect regarding exports. At the same time, there is no proof for learning, suggesting that within the timeframe of the analysis firms from the Lodz Voivodeship do not experience productivity gains due to international trade or investment

Urbaniści i architekci zastali w 1945 roku miasto o specyficznym charakterze – twór spontanicznej rewolucji przemysłowej i planowych przekształceń okresu międzywojennego, a wreszcie rezultat wprowadzenia w roku 1939 systemu administracji niemieckiej. W latach 1945-1989 dzięki występowaniu czynników miastotwórczych, takich jak rozwój przemysłu w warunkach Polskiej Rzeczpospolitej Ludowej oraz rozbudowa funkcji stolicy województwa, zrealizowano niewątpliwie fragment międzywojennego pragnienia dotyczącego kreowania Łodzi wielkomiejskiej.[...]Post-war hospitals are an essential constituent contributing to the architectural image of Lodz, an agglomeration which has a relatively short history of the formation of big-city space. In 1945 urban planners and architects were confronted with a very specific character of the city – an outcome of a spontaneous industrial revolution, followed by planned transformations during the interwar period and the introduction of the German administration system in 1939. The monographic work discusses transformations changing the character of the city, which began at the moment when it was liberated from the German occupation and, along with the whole country, joined the orbit of the communist system. At that time Lodz started the process of developing into a modern metropolitan centre bustling with social, political, scientific and cultural life. In the years 1945-1989, the occurrence of city-creation factors, such as development of industry in the conditions of the Polish People’s Republic and the fact that it performed the function of the capital of the voivodship allowed the interwar dream of transforming Lodz into a metropolis to come true.[...

    No full text
The aim of this article is to present a brief history of Lodz in view of historical events leading to the deindustrialization of the city during the period of Poland’s economic transformation. This phenomenon seems to be disregarded and unnoticed by architects and implementers of the transition from a centrally planned economy to a market economy

This paper aims at highlighting the role of higher education institutions in Lodz in the regeneration of urban space and in building the international brand of a university town. Higher education institutions in Lodz are managers and administrators of many historic buildings that testify to the identity of the city and its rich historic legacy. Besides renovating these buildings, universities provide them with new functions by opening them up to local and international communities. Innovation in regenerating cultural heritage may become a distinguishing feature of both Lodz universities and international city’s brand strategy. The key challenge to Lodz is to complete the global regeneration of a post-industrial city in social, cultural, economic, and spatial dimensions using EU funds

    No full text
Urban parks are significant elements that improve the quality of life in built-up areas. This research aims to identify the most attractive park in Lodz, Poland, using a set of assessment indicators. In our opinion, the decision-making process in assessing the attractiveness of urban parks may be assisted by Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA). Two methods were chosen from the MCDA group, namely the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). The research shows that the proposed methods reveal which park needs support and calls for investment

Praca zawiera wyniki oznaczeń i zawartość jonów pierwiastków śladowych w glebach antropogenicznych miasta Łodzi. Badania laboratoryjne wykonano dla dziewięciu próbek glebowych pobranych w różnych miejscach miasta Łodzi. W próbach oznaczono stężenia Pb, Co, Zn, Cr, Ni, Cd, As metodą absorpcyjnej spektroskopii atomowej. Wyniki przeprowadzonych badań wskazują że koncentracje wymienionych jonów w glebach Łodzi utrzymują się na niskim poziomie, zatem badane gleby urbano- i industroziemne można zaliczyć do gleb niezanieczyszczonych. This paper presents the analysis of trace elements in anthropogenic soils of Lodz.
