The Toddaid and Gwawdodyn byr in the poetry of Dafydd ap Gwilym, with an Appendix concerning the Traethodlau attributed to him

The Toddaid and Gwawdodyn byr in the poetry of Dafydd ap Gwilyn, with an appendix concerning the traethodlau attributed to him The two metres toddaid and gwawdodyn byr are archaic meters inherited from the Gogynfeirdd, and characteristic of the awdl. Dafydd ap Gwilym did not write many poems with these two meters ; the author seeks for the metrical features characterising the works of Dafydd in order to determine new criteria for authenticity. One of the awdlau would then appear as spurious (I Iesu Grist). As regards the traethodlau, whose metrics are freer and adapted to the setting of conversation, no formal evidence was found against their authenticity.

Law and society in Welsh medieval literature. There is more than one way of reading the collection of tales improperly called Mabinogion by Lady Charlotte Guest whose complete English translation of the Red Book of Hergest and of the White Book of Rhydderch was published between 1838 and 1849. In his article the author deals with only two aspects : he shows how some passages, which otherwise would remain misunderstood, can be interpreted in the light of Cyfraith Hywel (the usual designation for Welsh texts and Latin translations of the Welsh Law). Conversely, he shows how these stories illustrate the law texts and confirm their stipulations. Examples are taken only from the Four Branches. Walters Dafydd Bened. Framing Democracy: The Competing Discourses of the Pro-Establishment and the Pro-Democracy Camps in Hong Kong 2003 – 2014

    No full text
This study examines the competing democracy discourses in Hong Kong (HK) from 2003-2014. Using primarily the ideas of Foucault (amongst others) on discourse, power, and institutions, it investigates the continuities and discontinuities of the competing democracy discourses in HK, in the context of its democratisation process/ reforms from 2003-2014. This study employs a corpus-based critical discourse analysis approach (as advocated by Baker, McEnery, Subtirelu etc.) that couples together quantitative (on a vast corpus constructed by the author, comprising of 234,295+ newspaper articles; and on the election platforms of all candidates in the LegCo elections1 ) and qualitative (elite interviews, focus group, document analysis, panel discussions, participant observations etc.) methods, with a broadly path-dependent (discourse-historical) leaning (beginning with the half-a-million strong protest on 1st July, 2003). It will be argued that the democracy discourses of both the pro-democracy and pro-establishment camps have linked together a set of different values, discourses, social movements, and political power in specific ways at specific times: it was an evolutionary process, where the discourses experienced continuities and discontinuities that subsequently re-invented new political identities, re-negotiated the consensus between the civil and the political societies, and re-drew the remits of ‘Democracy’ (the order of discourse) in HK. Thus, in this study, democracy discourses are not only conceived of as just repertoires of ideas, activity types or policy positions, but they have also given the pro-democracy and pro-establishment camps the 'lenses' and the ‘rule books’ for which they use to make sense of the issues and the discursive spaces (opportunities) of the day. On a theoretical level, this study does not claim to have constructed any new general/ grand models on discourse analysis or democratisation. Instead, it applies and improves on the existing approaches- corpus-based critical discourse analysis (as advocated by Baker, McEnery, Subtirelu etc.) and agency-centric (transitologist) approach to democratisation (as advocated by Rustow, Karl etc.)- to analyse the competing democracy discourses in HK. By doing so, this study seeks to offer a new understanding that does not take for granted the conventional concepts in political analyses, and enables researchers to examine the dynamic interactions of discourses (democracy), power, social movements, and identities, in the context of HK’s ongoing democratisation process

Revisiting Taiwan and Chinese Nationalism: Identity and Status in International Society

    No full text
It would be nice to be able to claim that Taiwan and Chinese Nationalism: Identity and Status in International Society was the result of a well-thought-out research plan. A more honest account is that it was the outcome of the author being lucky enough to be in the right place and at the right time. This makes it very much a snapshot of Taiwan at a particularly exciting period in its own political history, which occurred as the world entered the post-Cold War period

Some evidence that one-to-one dietary interventions in the dental setting can change behaviour

    No full text
Data sources: The Cochrane Oral Health Group Trials Register CENTRAL, Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Web of Science conference proceedings (IADR and ORCA), reference lists and Dissertations Abstracts were searched. Study selection: Randomised controlled trials assessing the effectiveness of 1:1 dietary interventions in a dental care setting were included. This could be brief advice, skills training, self help materials, counselling or lifestyle strategies delivered by any member of the dental team. Data extraction and synthesis: Two reviewers independently screened and abstracted data with disagreements resolved by discussion and a third review author. The Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool was used. Results: Five studies were included; two were at high risk of bias, three were at unclear risk of bias. Two were multi-intervention studies where the dietary intervention was one component of a wider programme of prevention, but where data on dietary behaviour change were reported. One of the single intervention studies concerned caries prevention. The others concerned general health outcomes. No studies were aimed at preventing tooth erosion. Four out of five studies found a significant change in dietary behaviour in at least one of the primary outcomes. Conclusions: There is some evidence that one-to-one dietary interventions in the dental setting can change behaviour, although the evidence is greater for interventions aiming to change fruit/vegetable and alcohol consumption than for those aiming to change dietary sugar consumption. There is a need for more studies, particularly in the dental practice setting, as well as greater methodological rigour in the design, statistical analysis and reporting of such studies

Y Dosbarth Melyn [The Yellow Classroom] Authorial Ontology and Communicative Intentionality in (an) Observational Documentary Film

    No full text
The aim of Y Dosbarth Melyn [The Yellow Classroom] in research terms was to explore in what ways the observational mode of documentary filmmaking might relate to the selfhood of the author. In particular, the work asks: how does the observational documentary mode enable an author to communicate aspects of their own ontological position? Screened at Wales International Film Festival, Camarthen Bay Film Festival, Wairoa Film Festival, and the Cardiff International Film Festival, Y Dosbarth Melyn [The Yellow Classroom] underlines the contingent and shifting nature of the connection between text and audience in the filmmaker’s mind. In particular, the work shows that observational documentary techniques can be used in a more fluid way than has been previously recognised and admitted by many of the field’s Direct Cinema practitioners

    Taiwan Studies Revisited

    No full text
This book examines and reviews some of the key figures in Taiwan Studies to plot the development of the field by revisiting their earlier influential books and bodies of work. Often autobiographical in detail, each chapter asks the author to discuss the origins of their research and how their engagement with the field has developed since. The contributors then discuss their methodologies, fieldwork and arguments, as well as how their work was received at the time. They also go on to reflect on their chosen methods and core findings, assessing whether they have stood the test of time. Reflecting the diversity of the Taiwan Studies field, subjects covered in this volume include sociology, musicology, linguistics, comparative politics, international relations and anthropology. As such, this comprehensive overview adopts a distinctly interdisciplinary approach to understanding Taiwan.Painting a picture of the changing state of international Taiwan Studies through the work of leading scholars, this book will be invaluable to students and scholars of Taiwan Studies, Chinese Studies and Asian politics, culture and society

The postsecular political philosophy of Jürgen Habermas: Translating the sacred

    No full text
Jürgen Habermas is arguably the world's most influential living philosopher - by introducing ideas such as the public sphere, constitutional patriotism, and the discourse theory of law and democracy, he has transformed modern political philosophy. But since 2001, Habermas's thought has taken an unexpected turn. This book is the first full-length treatment of Habermas's postsecular political philosophy, and critically analyses his new direction of thought. The author places the postsecular turn in the context of Habermas's long-standing commitment to developing a postmetaphysical account of morality, politics and human communication; the tension between secular liberal democracy and religious freedom is real, but there may be losses as well as gains to Habermas's quest to translate the sacred
