Role of laparoscopy to assess the chance of optimal cytoreductive surgery in advanced ovarian cancer: a pilot study.
Development of a supercritical fluid extraction method for determination of total fat content in fish products.
A supercritical fluid extraction method was developed for the assessment of the fat content in fish products. Various fish species (bass, salmon, eel, cod, tuna) having a fat content ranging from 0.2 to 25%, were utilized in the study as fresh or commercially frozen products. The fat recovery efficiency of Soxhlet, Bligh and Dyer and supercritical CO2 extraction methods was compared and the optimized working parameters with supercritical CO2 were 35 MPa, 60 °C,
and use of EtOH (5% mol/mol) as modifier
Improving neuropsychiatric symptoms following stroke using virtual reality: A case report
RATIONALE: Post-stroke cognitive impairment occurs frequently in patients with stroke, with a 20% to 80% prevalence. Anxiety is common after stroke, and is associated with a poorer quality of life. The use of standard relaxation techniques in treating anxiety in patients undergoing post-stroke rehabilitation have shown some positive effects, whereas virtual reality seems to have a role in the treatment of anxiety disorders, especially when associated to neurological damage. PATIENTS CONCERNS: A 50-year-old woman, smokers, affected by hypertension and right ischemic stroke in the chronic phase (i.e., after 12 months by cerebrovascular event), came to our observation for a severe anxiety state and a mild cognitive deficit, mainly involving attention and visuo-executive processes, besides a mild left hemiparesis. DIAGNOSIS: Anxiety in a patient with ischemic stroke. INTERVENTIONS: Standard relaxation techniques alone in a common clinical setting or the same psychological approach in an immersive virtual environment (i.e., Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment - CAREN). OUTCOMES: The patient's cognitive and psychological profile, with regard to attention processes, mood, anxiety, and coping strategies, were evaluated before and after the 2 different trainings. A significant improvement in the functional and behavioral outcomes were observed only at the end of the combined approach. LESSONS: The immersive virtual reality environment CAREN might be useful to improve cognitive and psychological status, with regard to anxiety symptoms, in post-stroke individuals

Forecasting stock price movements using neural networks
Includes bibliographical references (p. 99-101).The prediction of security prices has shown to be one of the most important but most difficult tasks in financial operations. Linear approaches failed to model the non-linear behaviour of markets and non-linear approaches turned out to posses too many constraints. Neural networks seem to be a suitable method to overcome these problems since they provide algorithms which process large sets of data from a non-linear context and yield thorough results. The first problem addressed by this research paper is the applicability of neural networks with respect to markets as a tool for pattern recognition. It will be shown that markets posses the necessary requirements for the use of neural networks, i.e. markets show patterns which are exploitable
The Tax Sensitivity of Foreign Direct Investment: Evidence from Firm-Level Panel Data
Understanding the determinants of foreign direct investment (FDI) is important for analyzing capital flows and the industrial organization of multinational firms. Most empirical studies of FDI, however, have focused on case studies of nontax factors in overseas investment decisions or on discerning reduced-form relationships between some measure of FDI and variables relating to nontax and tax aspects of the investment decision. In this paper, we examine the effects of taxation on FDI using previously unexplored (for this purpose) panel data on FDI by subsidiaries of U.S. multinational firms collected by Compustat's geographic segment file project. These firm- level data contain information on new capital investment overseas which enable us to measure tax influences on FDI more precisely and allow us to focus on structural models of subsidiaries' investment decision. Our empirical results cast significant doubt on the simplest notion that 'taxes don't matter' for U.S. firms' FDI decisions. Tax parameters influence FDI in precisely the way indicated by neoclassical models. Our results also lend support to the application of the 'tax capitalization' model to the study of dividend repatriation and foreign direct investment decisions.
Temporality in L2 Spanish: an investigation of the expression of temporality in the narrative discourse of Spanish L2 learners
The general objective o f this research study is the investigation of the development of the expression of temporality in Second Language Acquisition. In particular, this study examines the acquisition process by native English speakers who are second languages learners of Spanish Temporality is examined as it is manifested in the oral narration of events by these learners. The theoretical argument behind the research is based on linguistic relativity and “thinking for speaking” theories which consider how different languages deal with the linguistic coding of certain concepts, such as time and space, and the influence of linguistic forms on speakers’ perceptions and cognitive development of these concepts. The present study aims to answer the following question.
If the language they speak influences the manner in which speakers conceptualise temporal relations, will learners of a second language adopt the cognitive strategies and styles of the native speakers to refer to events in time, as their Interlanguage develops to approximate the target language? Specifically, will second language learners of Spanish adopt the patterns of temporal expression m narrative discourse, typical of Spanish native speakers? To answer this question standard qualitative and quantitative methods of research used in applied linguistics are utilized
