No full textEthics does not seem to occupy a field in itself within Plotinus’ philosophy; the moral questions seem to be deeply related to reflections on man and the nature of the Intellect. In this short essay I will try to define the essential aspects of Plotinus’ metaphysical and anthropological reflection, in order to highlight the incidence of ethical thought in it. The ethical reflection does not seem to have an autonomous role, as there is no ethics without metaphysics; for this reason, in Enneads, Plotinus seems to theorize the existence of a “meta-ethics”

No full textLa vita è un concetto che nel pensiero di Plotino attraversa tutta la compagine ontologica e appartiene, secondo gradazioni differenti, a ciascun essere. In questo senso essa è un πολλαχῶς λεγόμενον, ossia un termine che si dice in molti sensi. Nelle Enneadi, Plotino utilizza entrambi i termini greci per esprimere la nozione di vita: ζωή e βίος, rispettando nella maggior parte dei casi la tradizionale distinzione semantica. Tuttavia, ci sono dei casi in cui il filosofo si serve dei due termini in modo interscambiabile, chiarendo il contesto filosofico di riferimento

No full textAlthough Plotinus does not explicitly address the main problems of the biology, nevertheless the way in which he deals with the philosophical questions has got important consequences in the biological field, too. Ploti- nus dwells on the description of the somatic life’s characters, trying to answer at three fundamental questions: the first one, concerning the structure of the living organism and the organization of bodily functions; the second one, relating to a very complex subject concerning the psychophysical unity of the individual; the third one concerning the reflection on the embryology. In this contribution I will try to show how, starting from the analysis of the notion of life in an ontological sense, and, in particular, from the attempt to answer questions concerning psychol- ogy and the relationship between the soul and the body, Plotinus comes to delineate a sort of philosophy of biology
