A random time-dependent noncooperative equilibrium problem

The paper deals with the random time-dependent oligopolistic market equilibrium problem. For such a problem the firms’ point of view has been analyzed in Barbagallo and Guarino Lo Bianco (Optim. Lett. 14: 2479–2493, 2020) while here the policymaker’s point of view is studied. The random dynamic optimal control equilibrium conditions are expressed by means of an inverse stochastic time-dependent variational inequality which is proved to be equivalent to a stochastic time-dependent variational inequality. Some existence and well-posedness results for optimal regulatory taxes are obtained. Moreover a numerical scheme to compute the solution to the stochastic time-dependent variational inequality is presented. Finally an example is discussed

    Mixed H2/H∞ Fixed-Structure Control via Semi-Infinite optimization

    No full text
In the context of nite-dimensional linear time-invariant systems, the mixed H2/H∞ control has been the subject of numerous investigations mainly focused on Riccati equation or convex optimization approaches. This paper proposes a mixed H2/H∞ xed-structure control design based on a global optimization approach applied to a semi/innite minimization problem which is exactly equivalent to the original H2/H∞ problem. This method, that generalizes the mixed H2/H∞ PID control of Chen et al. (Chen et al., 1995), is presented, with reference to the basic unity-feedback system, to design a xed-structure controller by means of a recently devised genetic/interval algorithm (Guarino Lo Bianco and Piazzi, 1996). Computational results for an example, with comparisons, are also included

Water-Related Variables for Predicting Yield of Apple under Deficit Irrigation

Predicting apple yield in relation to tree water use is important for irrigation planning and evaluation. The aim of the present study was to identify measurable variables related to tree water use that could predict final fruit yield of apple trees under different strategies of deficit irrigation. Adult ‘Gala’ and ‘Fuji’ apple trees were exposed to conventional irrigation (CI), delivering 100% of crop evapotranspiration; partial root zone drying (PRD), delivering 50% of CI water only on one alternated side of the root-zone; and continuous deficit irrigation (CDI), delivering 50% of CI water on both sides of the root-zone. Integrals of soil (SWDint) and leaf (LWSDint) water deficit along with growth and stomatal conductance (Gsint) were calculated across each season and used to estimate total conductance (GStree) and transpiration (Trtree) per tree, transpiration efficiency on a fruit (GRfruit/Tr) or tree (GRtrunk/Tr) growth basis, and transpiration productivity (Yield/Trtree). ‘Fuji’ trees had higher Yield/Trtree, but had lower GRtrunk/Tr and similar GRfruit/Tr compared to ‘Gala’ trees. In ‘Fuji’, CDI reduced yield, trunk growth, leaf hydration, and gas exchange, while in ‘Gala’, it did not reduce yield and gas exchange. In ‘Fuji’, a linear combination of GRtrunk/Tr, GRfruit/Tr, and Gstree contributed to predicting yield, with GRfruit/Tr explaining nearly 78% of the model variability. In ‘Gala’, a linear combination of LWSDint and Gstree contributed to predicting yield, with Gstree explaining over 79% of the model variability. These results indicate that measuring tree water status or water use may help predict final apple yields only in those cultivars like ‘Gala’ that cannot limit dehydration by closing stomates because of carbon starvation. In more vigorous cultivars like ‘Fuji’, transpiration efficiency based on fruit growth can be a powerful predictor of final yields

Contrasting and Comparing Minority Language Policy: Europe and Australia

B1 - Chapter in Research BookContrasting and comparing European and Australian practices in language maintenance is a problematic exercise. For a start, the constitutional parameters are different. Australia is a single sovereign national state, while ‘Europe’ is an aggregating entity, expanding from an economic treaty among six sovereign national states unsteadily towards pooled sovereignty at a supra-national level. Europe’s moves towards political union, albeit hesitant and contested, give the appearance of re-enacting the cultural policies of its member states (utilizing the state discourses of efficiency of communication, common citizenship, participation and democracy). However, at least rhetorically, and in some clear ways practically too, the emergent Europe differs considerably in its cultural policies from those enacted by its own member states.

Kinematically constrained smooth real-time velocity planning for robotics applications

    No full text
The use of smooth command signals for the control of autonomous vehicles guarantees moderate travelling solicitations and better wheels grip. To achieve command smoothness, the vehicle longitudinal velocity must be continuous and differentiable. For this reason, a scheme for the real-time optimal velocity planning is proposed in this paper. A continuously differentiable profile, which satisfies assigned interpolating conditions, is generated by means of an optimization program which minimizes the longitudinal jerk. The resulting velocity function and its first derivative are constrained between assigned bounds

    Technical English for agriculture

    No full text
As the world goes global, the agricultural business needs to move across frontiers and oceans. Food, raw and processed, is regularly transported across continents. As space is no longer a limit for food trade and human nutrition, language cannot represent a barrier to this continuous exchange. In the last 60 years, English has been taking a foothold as the primary language for world trade and the exchange of agricultural goods is no exception. Agricultural sciences embrace a large number of disciplines, from botany to environmental physiology, from soil science to meteorology, from plant propagation to cultural management, from soil management to pest control, from field crops to animal husbandry, and so on. Learning a wide array of technical terms related to these disciplines is imperative today to be part of the world’s farming business, but certainly not an easy task. This handbook provides a first basic support to the vast amount of technical terms used in agriculture. It is intended to expand with time and include many more terms as other major and specialized subjects will be added. It is today a simple but useful tool for those who speak English as a second language and want to acquire the basic terminology for working and studying in the Agricultural field, as well as for interacting with an international audience

Per una «Grand Historical Sociology» Metodi di un’analisi storico sociale

    No full text
