Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Lo Yuen Yi\u27s research explores the impact and significance of a dying secret women’s writing script, nushu in both her drawing practice and contextual writing. Nushu , believed to be created by women, was a secret script used exclusively among women in Shangjiangxu Township, Jiangyong County, Hunan Province, China. Nushu, the unique writing tool, went beyond the boundaries of the universal language where their particularities had not been expressed. Through generations of practices, some women had defined for themselves positive terms in their contexts and produced their records with nushu in both writing and embroidery work. She explores to draw into the transposition of space with the inspiration of nushu that has enlightened the possibility of articulating through a unique and different mode of language.
With drawing as the core of my creative practice, she has been producing series of work by exerting some gendered stereotyped Chinese characters and the textural representations of nushu. While the intensity of her drawing suggests filling the time and space, her methodology through the use of mechanical prints, audio records, and video clips are explorations in the making of self through a unique and different script.
”The legend, sealed and unsealed” series display her recent practices, and some video and audio works. While gallery space is designed for showing artworks, non-gallery space within academic institutions, relatively un-defined for exhibiting, is more challenging and innovative, enhances exchanges between fine art and various disciplines. Such execution concurs to her practices that suggest modes of fluidity, ever-changing characteristics, and making dialogues with the space, all of which explore the possibility of articulating through a different language within the universal culture
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Conformal microstrip antennas
Microstrip antennas are widely used in several different technological areas including communication and navigation systems, weapons systems, radars, and telemetry and tracking systems. The microstrip antennas' physical features and simplicity of construction make them especially suited for these many applications.Practical uses of microstrip antennas often involve mounting the antennas on curved surfaces such as aircraft and missile fuselages, satellite bodies, and various other non-planar shapes; however, most of the research on these antennas has been devoted to their operation on flat mounting surfaces. Only a relatively few studies have been done of microstrip antennas on conformal surfaces.The purpose of this research is a study of thin microstrip antennas that are mounted on a truncated cylinder and truncated cone. Many physical objects on which microstrip antennas are used can be modeled by these two simple geometries. The finite size of the geometries is treated, whereas in the past, the effects of truncation of the structures were not included in a general way.This study deals with different methods of calculating the radiation patterns of a microstrip antenna on a truncated cone and cylinder. Discussed first are the cavity model for electrically thin microstrip antennas and how the model is used to simplify the radiation problem of the microstrip patch to that of finding the radiation of a magnetic point-source. Then discussions follow describing high-frequency methods for determining the radiation of a magnetic point-source using ray optics and the Uniform Theory of Diffraction (UTD). These methods are used to predict the radiation from linearly-polarized microstrip patches on a truncated cylinder and cone, and the results are compared to laboratory measurements. Cavity-backed T-fed slot antenna
Cavity-backed slot antennas are experiencing a revival because of the ever-increasing need for low-profile and conformal antennas which have a low radar cross section out of their operating frequency bands. Like thin microstrip patch antennas, cavity-backed slot antennas typically have a narrow impedance bandwidth of 1 to 6 percent of center frequency, which limits their usage. A new method of feeding a thin cavity slot antenna with a stripline leading to a T-bar, which lies beneath or in the slot, greatly enhances the impedance bandwidth over a range of 10 to 30 percent depending on the slot width.In the past, the design parameters for the T-fed slot antenna were obtained empirically. A computer model is developed in this thesis to provide a vehicle for analyzing the antenna's performance prior to fabrication. Since the antenna cavity is thin, there is a complex interaction between the T-bar, slot, stripline feed, and modes of the cavity.In the antenna model, all of the cavity apertures are closed with a perfect conductor, and the fields there and on the T-bar are replaced with equivalent currents. The analysis is simplified by the superposition principle to obtain the total fields in the cavity by summing all the fields produced independently by each equivalent current source in the closed cavity. A method of moments approach is used to find the coefficients of the unknown equivalent sources by matching the fields in the cavity and the stripline to the appropriate boundary conditions. From these values the impedance of the antenna is determined. To verify the model, T-fed slot antennas were fabricated and measured at X-band and S-band.
