The picture of God in Faraon by Bolesław Prus. Some chosen aspects of the linguistic analysis

    No full text
The article intends to outline Prus’ vision of religion, and of God in particular, included in the novel on ancient Egypt. The text comprises two basic parts: 1) “Genesis of Faraon”, 2) “Religions in Faraon”. One-word terms relating to God/gods. Essentially, the author discusses the semantic and stylistic content of the lexeme God/gods conditioned by the historical and literary reality as well as its discursive presentation which, in turn, depends on the type of narration (a 19th century narrator and an ancient one). Moreover, other one-word terms relating to God/gods are analysed, vitally the names of particular divine forms. The paper’s conclusion is that Faraon offers a monotheistic picture of God albeit the monotheism incorporates two beings which cannot be fully identified with each other. One of them is God in the general sense, with whom Prus seems closely affiliated, and the other one is the Jewish God who treats his followers as the chosen people. The polytheistic vision of gods pictured in Faraon can be accounted for primarily by educational, political and ecological factors

Phoenicians and the Polish Cause. Problems of Representation in Bolesław Prus’s Faraon

    No full text
This article proposes to reflect on selected paradoxes of representation in Bolesław Prus’s novel Faraon [The Pharaoh]. First of all, the author discusses the validity of the notions of “truth” / “falsehood” in literary studies and proves that there is no reason for applying them to fiction. Then, he focuses on the depiction of the uncanny magician Beroes and his actions, which transgress realistic standards of probability. Finally, the author argues that the analogy between the novel’s fictional Phoenicians and 19th-century Polish Jews drawn by some researchers is unjustified both because of the novel’s narrative mode and the writer’s opinions expressed in his other texts

    Den Siste Faraon

This thesis studies the connection between authoritarianism and legitimacy by applying it to Egypt. The author argues that the authoritarian regime in the country have maintained its power by using a consistent strategy involving cooptation of some groups and a selective repression of groups that threatens its position. In this way, it has been able to obtain legitimacy from key groups and suppress the groups that threaten its position. This study uses three variables in order to show the connection between legitimacy and the authoritarian resilience. This paper challenges the perception that an authoritarian regime lacks legitimacy and bases its rule exclusively on oppressing its population

This article analyses the configurations of the author in the virtual epoch. Instead of a generic approach towards a definition of the author, it favors a differentiated conception which investigates the diverse functions and roles of the author in the respective social systems. The article parts from the actual discussion on hypertext as the realization of the old dream of a Universal Library. It will show the diverse historic efforts to conceive literature and arts in general as a communicative field free from authorial references, frequently seen as “author-itarian”, as well as the continuity to keep a stable and identifiable authorship in the juridical and economic field.

    No full text
The author refers to Roland Barthes’s early concept of mythology in analyzing the films of Jerzy Kawalerowicz, one of the most outstanding Polish directors of the twentieth century. He interprets three of Kawalerowicz’s films, Pociąg [Night Train], Matka Joanna od Aniołów [Mother Joan of the Angels] and Faraon [Pharaoh], which are read in the mythological register and in the political context. First the statements of the director in regard to each film are presented, then the judgments of film critics are provided, and finally the author gives his own interpretation. Night Train is shown as a film addressing the wrongs of the Stalinist era, and the problem of a totalitarian state. Mother Joanne of the Angels questions the sense of ideology in a totalitarian world, and is partially the director’s search for political identity, while Pharaoh is a look at the post-October reformers and the reasons for their failure. Pharaoh also provides a new vision of the state

Data Distribution Management (DDM) services are very important to online services in general and, in particular, to online Computer Games. Many previous works have addressed the problemof minimizing bandwidth usage by avoiding sending unnecessary data to clients, which is often referred to as InterestManagement. Many good algorithms have been developed to calculate clients’ interests, having O(n2) complexity in worst case, but none of them have paid attention to the time dependencies of the data. In this paper we present a novel algorithm for Interest Management which reaches a O(1) complexity by profiting from time dependencies of data related to clients’ interests. Our results show that this approach improves previously existing ones in time performance, and it is specially suitable for its use in online computer game servers
