In addiction tothe considerations on the possible new dating of the Rooster and complementing the critical observations on the literary tradition concerning its presumed position on the bell-tower of the Basilica of Constantine presented in other articles of this publication, the author contextualizes the archival sources regarding the Rooster, briefly recapitulating, on the grounds of the surviving documentation, the various relocations and restoration work that it had undergone from the late 16th century to the present-da
Opportunities and criticisms of voluntary emission reduction projects developed by Public Administrations: Analysis of 143 case studies implemented in Italy
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) sets an overall framework for intergovernmental efforts to tackle the challenge posed by climate change. Besides the “flexibility mechanisms” defined by the Kyoto Protocol to lower the overall costs of achieving their emissions targets, The Voluntary Green House Gases (GHG) reduction projects can have a lead role in GHG reduction in “non Emissions Trading System ETS sectors”. Nowadays, the voluntary market is characterised by critical aspects, such as fragmentation, lack of accounting, monitoring and validation rules that have led to the low spread of voluntary emission reduction projects developed by local authorities in the European Union despite their high potentiality.
The aim of this paper is to test the applicability of voluntary emission reduction projects in the public sector following a homogeneous and consistent pattern. A research has been performed at local level on 143 voluntary emission reduction projects implemented by Public Administrations in Northern and Central Italy in renewable energy, energy efficiency and transport sectors. The applicable standards and methodologies have been checked and the case studies have been analysed though a three-step process: Preliminary additionality assessment; Projects selection; Validation of the selected project. The assessment shows that energy efficiency projects, once overcoming additionality issues, are the most promising for public entities while renewable energy and transport projects resulted to be mainly affected by double counting problems and lack of reliable methodologie
International audienceFrom the inventory of Gallo-Roman images of Jupiter, the author reflects on the links betweenTaranis and Jupiter. This is to define the nature and role of the Celtic substratum in the Gallo-Romanreligion
Fatal pneumonia following maternal HSV-1 viraemia in late pregnancy
Neonatal Herpes simplex virus (HSV) pneumonia without apparent accompanying disseminated infection is a rare condition. We describe a case of neonatal pneumonia following maternal HSV type 1 viraemia in late pregnancy. A review of the literature shows that cases of HSV presenting as pneumonia in the first week of life are the most severe form of neonatal HSV
The Author intends to measure the effects of privatisation on Italian enterprises (1992-2002) and to assess their similarities with those found by international research on 29 countries (1961-1995): a limited reduction in staff numbers; increased efficiency in those enterprises controlled by multinationals; a lower ratio between financial debts and equity in those enterprises controlled by foreign shareholders. Through analyses of the financial data of 14 privatised enterprises in Italy, the Author did not find many differences between the Italian and international experience, with two exceptions: in Italy privatisation caused a significant decrease in staff numbers as well as in the ratio between financial debts and equity, irrespective of the shareholder’s nationality. This shows that prior to privatisation Italian enterprises were over-staffed and had excessive debts, more than those studied abroad
The aim of this article is to show the need to adopt a cultural approach in the translation of literary works, especially when these are the product of postcolonial authors. These works, coming from cultures that sometimes are very different from our western culture, tend to show a certain resistance to translation. A cultural approach requires, before translating the single sentence or word, a knowledge of the culture that has produced the text, of the history and literary heritage of that culture so as to better grasp intertextual references, as well as a reading of the other writings by the author whose text one has to translate. This article focuses on the incipit of the novel Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie, in particular on the phrase ‘once upon a time’ and its Italian translation suggesting a possibility that is slightly different from the one appearing in the Italian version of the book, yet, according to the author of this article, is more faithful to the Author’s intention. The alternative translation is motivated through an overview of Rushdie’s use of the English language and history, the assumed lack of historical sense in ancient India and the roots of such assumption, and historiography in India, as all these aspects are involved in the translation of this novel that is the product of a highly hybridized culture
A GPU-Accelerated SVD Algorithm, Based on QR Factorization and Givens Rotations, for DWI Denoising
In this work, we present a parallel implementation of the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) method on Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) using CUDA programming model. Our approach is based on an iterative parallel version of the QR factorization by means Givens plane rotations using the Sameh and Kuck scheme. The parallel algorithm is driven by an outer loop executed on the CPU. Therefore, threads and blocks configuration is organized in order to use the shared memory and avoid multiple accesses to global memory. However, the main kernel provides coalesced accesses to global memory using contiguous indices. As case study, we consider the application of the SVD in the Overcomplete Local Principal Component Analysis (OLPCA) algorithm for the Diffusion Weighted Imaging (DWI) denoising process. Our results show significant improvements in terms of performances with respect to the CPU version that encourage its usability for this expensive application
The Author has analyzed the consolidated annual reports of the major Italian companies in the past decade and has compared them with similar multinational companies and with the financial aggregates of the industry. With reference to Fiat Auto, the Author has found that in the recent years this Company has lost capability of competing from a technological standpoint with its foreign competitors. This factor has then weakened the financial situation of the Company. The strategy chosen by Enichem of leaving the productive vertical integration in favour of an outsourcing of numerous activities has not brought any benefit to the company in terms of profitability. The economic recovery efforts realized during the period 1996-98 by Alitalia have been made useless by the same Company between the end of 1999 and the end of the first half of 2001, both in terms of economics and financials and of productivity of labour. In the recent two years Olivetti has managed Telecom Italia introducing efficiency, but hasn't done technical investments enough. Furthermore, Olivetti has created a situatione of indebtedness that is unsostainable for Telecom Italia. Without considering revenues coming from video- and radio-licence fee and without the costs related to the public function of the company, in the nineties Rai's profitability was in line with Mediaset, its Italian competitor
