The Aims behind the Compilation of the Shishuo Xinyu
No full textThe Shishuo xinyu 世説新語 expounds the need for mastery of the cultural values constituting the foundations of the ver y existence of the authentic aristocrats at the time, as opposed to the aristocracy who formed part of the statesanctioned class system that was established during the Western Jin as a result of the introduction of a system of five grades of nobles in the late Cao Wei. These cultural values were specifically Confucianism and character evaluations, which formed the basic education of aristocrats, as well as the study of various other disciplines. Furthermore, the content of these values was encapsulated in the chapter titles of the Shishuo xinyu, which drew on the four subjects or disciplines mentioned in the Lunyu 論語, and it was shown that Confucianism lay at the root of not only the aristocracy but also Chinese culture. On the basis of this general learning, the Shishuo xinyu also affirmed the way in which the aristocrats from the north, in order to maintain their independence from power, which could act as a reason for superiority, entrusted practical affairs to lowly men of the south, applied themselves to “pure conversation” (qingtan 清談), and protected local influential families through closed marital relationships. Unlike the Yanshi jiaxun 顔氏家訓, the Shishuo xinyu is not a work that reexamines the aristocracy’s original mode of being. Rather, it is an educational work the aim of which was to actively af firm the aristocracy of the Liu Song period and pass on the culture lying at the root of its very existence. By compiling the Shishuo xinyu under the aegis of the imperial household, Liu Yiqing 劉義慶 aimed to provide a general summar y of the aristocrats’ mode of being. In addition, his staff, who actually wrote it, also intended for it to become a work prescribing the mode of being of aristocrats so as to preserve the aristocracy in the Liu Song too. Critical Success Factors in Agile-Based Digital Transformation Projects
No full textDigital transformation (DT) requires organizations to navigate complex technological and organizational changes, often under conditions of uncertainty. While agile methodologies are widely adopted to address the iterative and cross-functional nature of DT, limited attention has been paid to identifying critical success factors (CSFs) from a socio-technical systems (STS) perspective. This study addresses that gap by integrating and prioritizing CSFs as interdependent elements within a layered socio-technical framework. Drawing on a systematic review of 17 empirical and conceptual studies, we adapt Chow and Cao’s agile success model and validate a set of 14 CSFs across five domains—organizational, people, process, technical, and project—through a Delphi-informed Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The findings reveal that organizational and people-related enablers, particularly management commitment, team capability, and organizational environment, carry the greatest weight in agile-based DT contexts. These results inform a three-layered framework—comprising organizational readiness, agile delivery, and project artefacts—which reflects how social, technical, and procedural factors interact systemically. The study contributes both theoretically, by operationalizing STS theory in the agile DT domain, and practically, by providing a prioritized CSF model to guide strategic planning and resource allocation in transformation initiatives

Comparing national environmental and economic performances through emergy sustainability indicators: Moving environmental ethics beyond anthropocentrism toward ecocentrism
No full textMany sustainable indicators have been developed to assess performances of systems at all scales. However, a careful testing is needed to determine if these indicators are actually coherent with the study assumptions and real case sustainability. Firstly, we reviewed the evolutionary history of the sustainable indicators in both socio-economic and thermodynamic perspectives. Then we analyzed the contribution of several key indicators to the sustainable performance of nations with a critical eye. Results show that: 1) EmSI (Emergy Sustainability Index) is negatively correlated with EF-BC (Total Ecological Footprint-Total Biocapacity); 2) A country with a good economy in terms of monetary indicators tends to have a low EmSI as well as a relatively high EF (Ecological Footprint); 3) A country with a relatively high R% (indigenous renewable fraction of emergy use) would possibly have relatively low HDI (Human Development Index), GSI (Genuine Savings Index), and EF. After analyzing the essence of these indicators, we concluded that clearly the use of nonrenewable resources (minerals, fossil energy, topsoil, forestry and fishery extraction) speeds up the wealth and welfare of a country and, at the present rates of withdrawal, undermines its long-term sustainability. Priority focus should be given to preservation of natural environment rather than resource appropriation by a minority of the human being. Indicators capable to highlight such aspects should be developed and used in policy. The apparent inconsistency of EmSI with other indicators stems from their different environmental ethics, placed on ecocentrism rather than anthropocentrism

gates is reported. The unexpected unique catalytic activity of silver was
ascribed to its dual role as a Lewis acid activating alkene substrates and as a
transition metal forming silver carbenoids. A wide range of internal
alkenes, including challenging diarylethenes, were suitable for this
protocol, thereby affording a variety of cyclopropanes with high efficiency in a stereoselective manner under mild conditions
