    Torque-Transferring Characteristics of Offshore Tetrapod Piled Jacket Foundations in Dense Sand

    Tetrapod piled jacket (TPJ) foundations that support offshore wind turbines (OWTs) tend to be subjected to significant torque that is caused by eccentric loading from wind, waves, or accidental vessel impact. This paper presented a comprehensive three-dimensional (3D) numerical analysis to investigate TPJs performance under torsional loading, which considered the distribution of local torque and rotation over pile shafts and the underlying torsional load transfer mechanism. A modified Mohr–Coulomb (MMC) model for dense sands was implemented in ABAQUS/Standard that captured the evolution of the friction and dilation (ψ) angles against the accumulated plastic shear strain (γp). The results showed that the torque that was imposed at the head of a TPJ foundation could trigger soil reactions of torsional resistance (τs) and horizontal force (Hp) in individual piles; higher pile spacing-to-diameter ratios (S/D) mitigated the influence of torsional loads. A pressure-dependent torsional load transfer model was proposed that considered the effects of the pile–sand relative stiffness and sand’s relative density (DR). The model could be employed to predict TPJs response under torsional loading and improve their practical design

    Chalk is encountered under large areas of Northern Europe and other locations worldwide, and a wide range of onshore and offshore structures are founded on piles driven in chalk. The safe and economical design of these structures is challenging because of current uncertainties regarding their axial capacity and load-displacement behavior. This work builds on recent research into the axial capacity of open-ended driven piles by proposing new shaft and base load transfer models for chalk that employ geotechnical properties measured directly in laboratory and in-situ tests. First, this study set out a new closed-form elastic analysis of the initial tension loading response. Then, a new nonlinear shaft model was proposed that captures the radial variation in properties induced by pile installation in chalk and uncouples the piles’ stiffness responses from their ultimate local shaft resistances, which are predicted independently. A new base model was also outlined that predicts the loading response based on the chalk’s small-strain stiffness and cone penetration test (CPT) cone resistances. The models are shown to offer good load-displacement predictions for 0.139-m to 1.8-m diameter piles tested between 20 and 600 days after driving at several sites. Improved reliability and accuracy are demonstrated through comparison with existing load-transfer methods

    Finite element modelling of pipe piles driven in low-to-medium density chalk under monotonic axial loading

    Percussive driving in low-to-medium density chalk creates a thin annulus of fully de-structured ‘putty’ chalk around pile shafts and an outer annular zone where fracturing is more intense than in the natural chalk. This damage and the related generation, and subsequent equalisation, of excess pore pressures impacts the piles’ time-dependent axial loading behaviour, as do other ageing processes. This paper presents finite element analyses of open steel tubular piles driven for the recent ALPACA and ALPACA Plus research projects under monotonic axial loading to failure after extended ageing periods. A nonlinear elastic stiffness model with a nonlocal deviatoric strain-based Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion was employed, with different sets of properties to represent the de-structured, fractured chalk and intact chalk. It is shown that the piles’ axial responses are mainly controlled by the puttified chalk annuli. A simplified but efficient means is adopted to impose pre-loading chalk effective stress conditions that explicitly capture the effects of installation damage and subsequent ageing. The potential for strain-softening in the brittle chalk is examined and the effective stress paths developed in representative chalk elements throughout the loading are considered in conjunction with the mobilisation of accumulated deviatoric strains. The simulations indicate 264% higher shaft capacity in compression than in tension, which is mainly attributed to the internal chalk plug

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
