    Implementing a learning technology strategy: top-down strategy meets bottom-up culture

    Using interview-based 'insider case study' research, this paper outlines why the University of Salford has adopted a Learning Technologies Strategy and examines the factors which are likely to lead to its successful implementation. External reasons for the adoption focused on the need to: respond to 'increased Higher Education (HE) competition', meet student expectations of learning technology use, provide more flexibility and access to the curriculum, address the possible determining effect of technology and establish a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) presence in this 'particular area of the HE landscape'. Internal drivers centred on the need to: continue a 'bottom-up' e-learning pilot project initiative, particularly given that a VLE is a 'complex tool' which requires effective strategic implementation, and promote the idea that learning technology will play an important role in determining the type of HE institution that the University of Salford wishes to become. Likely success factors highlighted the need to: create 'time and space' for innovation, maintain effective communication and consultation at all levels of the organization, emphasize the operational aspects of the strategy, establish a variety of staff development processes and recognize the negotiatory processes involved in understanding the term 'web presence' in local teaching cultures. Fundamentally, the paper argues that policy makers should acknowledge the correct 'cultural configuration' of HE institutions when seeking to manage and achieve organizational change. Thus, it is not just a question of establishing 'success factors' per se but also whether they are contextualized appropriately within a 'correct' characterization of the organizational culture

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Pragmatic Case Studies as a Source of Unity in Applied Psychology

    To unify or not to unify applied psychology: that is the question. In this article we review pendulum swings in the historical efforts to answer this question—from a comprehensive, positivist, “top-down,” deductive yes between the 1930s and the early 60s, to a postmodern no since then. A rationale and proposal for a limited, “bottom-up,” inductive yes in applied psychology is then presented, employing a case-based paradigm that integrates both positivist and postmodern themes and components. This paradigm is labeled “pragmatic psychology” and, its specific use of case studies, the “Pragmatic Case Study Method” (“PCS Method”). We call for the creation of peer-reviewed journal-databases of pragmatic case studies as a foundational source of unifying applied knowledge in our discipline. As one example, the potential of the PCS Method for unifying different angles of theoretical regard is illustrated in an area of applied psychology, psychotherapy, via the case of Mrs. B. The article then turns to the broader historical and epistemological arguments for the unifying nature of the PCS Method in both applied and basic psychology.Peer reviewe

    Examining the five‐stage e‐moderating model: Designed and emergent practice in the learning technology profession

    This paper highlights the need for learning technologists to establish their ‘academic legitimacy’ within the complexities of online learning and teaching practice. Frameworks such as the ‘five stage e‐moderating model’ can be useful in developing the knowledge base but there are dangers in them becoming too reified within an increasingly commodified higher education (HE) environment. The paper calls for greater professional reflexivity and contestation within learning technology practice and concludes by inviting the Alt‐J readership to engage in a critical debate with regard to these issues

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Increased aldosterone-dependent Kv1.5 recycling predisposes to pacing-induced atrial fibrillation in Kcne3-/- mice

    Hyperaldosteronism is associated with an increased prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF). Mutations in KCNE3 have been associated with AF, and Kcne3(-/-) mice exhibit hyperaldosteronism. In this study, we used recently developed Kcne3(-/-) mice to study atrial electrophysiology with respect to development of aldosterone-dependent AF. In invasive electrophysiology studies, Kcne3(-/-) mice displayed a reduced atrial effective refractory period (AERP) and inducible episodes of paroxysmal AF. The cellular arrhythmogenic correlate for AF predisposition was a significant increase in atrial Kv currents generated by the micromolar 4-aminopyridine-sensitive Kv current encoded by Kv1.5. Electrophysiological alterations in Kcne3(-/-) mice were aldosterone-dependent and were associated with increased Rab4, -5, and -9-dependent recycling of Kv1.5 channels to the Z-disc/T-tubulus region and lateral membrane via activation of the Akt/AS160 pathway. Treatment with spironolactone inhibited Akt/AS160 phosphorylation, reduced Rab-dependent Kv1.5 recycling, normalized AERP and atrial Kv currents to the wild-type level, and reduced arrhythmia induction in Kcne3(-/-) mice. Kcne3 deletion in mice predisposes to AF by a heretofore unrecognized mechanism-namely, increased aldosterone-dependent Kv1.5 recycling via Rab GTPases. The findings uncover detailed molecular mechanisms underpinning a channelopathy-linked form of AF and emphasize the inevitability of considering extracardiac mechanisms in genetic arrhythmia syndromes.-Lisewski, U., Koehncke, C., Wilck, N., Buschmeyer B., Pieske, B., Roepke, T.
