Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

In this paper, we report the first case of albinism in a wild black-faced black spider monkey (Ateles chamek) found on the Las Piedras River in south-eastern Peru. Westerschelde oeververbinding
Dit afstudeerontwerp betreft het algemene ontwerp van een oeververbinding tussen Kruiningen en Perkpolder in de Westerschelde. Uit vier alternatieven, te weten een brug, een lange doorgaande tunnel, een combinatie van bruggen en tunnels en een combinatie van twee tunnels is als oplossing gekozen een lange doorgaande tunnel, met een lengte van 4.8 km. Als tracé is gekozen het tracé uit het RWS ontwerp voor de Vaste Oeververbinding Westerschelde, een brugtunnelcombinatie. A model-independent Dalitz plot analysis of B±→DK± with D→K0Sh+h− (h=π,K) decays and constraints on the CKM angle γ
A binned Dalitz plot analysis of B ±→DK ± decays, with D→KS0π+π- and D→KS0K+K-, is performed to measure the CP-violating observables x ± and y ± which are sensitive to the CKM angle γ. The analysis exploits 1.0 fb -1 of data collected by the LHCb experiment. The study makes no model-based assumption on the variation of the strong phase of the D decay amplitude over the Dalitz plot, but uses measurements of this quantity from CLEO-c as input. The values of the parameters are found to be x -=(0.0±4.3±1.5±0.6)×10 -2, y -=(2.7±5.2±0.8±2.3)×10 -2, x +=(-10.3±4.5±1.8±1.4)×10 -2 and y +=(-0.9±3.7±0.8±3.0)×10 -2. The first, second, and third uncertainties are the statistical, the experimental systematic, and the error associated with the precision of the strong-phase parameters measured at CLEO-c, respectively. These results correspond to γ=(44-38+43)°, with a second solution at γ→γ+180°, and r B=0.07±0.04, where r B is the ratio between the suppressed and favoured B decay amplitudes
Overstromingsrisico's in Nederland in een veranderend klimaat: Verwachtingen, schattingen en berekeningen voor het project Nederland Later
Het Milieu- en Natuurplanbureau (MNP) werkt aan een 2e Duurzaamheidsverkenning voor Nederland. In dat kader wordt onder meer nagegaan wat de klimaatverandering betekent \u96 of zou moeten betekenen \u96 voor de ruimtelijke ontwikkelingen in Nederland: Nederland Later. Eén van de vragen daarbij is of, hoe, in welke mate en op welk moment de Nederlandse overheid de ruimtelijke ordening (veel) meer moet laten leiden door overwegingen van overstromingsrisicobeheersing. Daartoe zijn MNP en Delft Hydraulics (WL) gezamenlijk nagegaan hoe het risico zich ontwikkelt bij ongewijzigd beleid (referentiescenario\u92s) en wat de consequenties zijn van enkele strategische beleidsalternatieven. De ontwikkeling van het risico is gekwantificeerd voor de periode tot 2040, maar gezien het feit dat de klimaatverandering en zeespiegelstijging dan nog lang zullen doorgaan en het ruimtegebruik niet snel en makkelijk valt te veranderen, wordt de ontwikkeling geplaatst in een lange-termijnperspectief. Het onderhavige rapport gaat in op de volgende vragen: .. Wat betekent de klimaatverandering en zeespiegelstijging voor de beleidsopgave inzake overstromingsrisico\u92s op korte en lange termijn? .. Quantum control and coherence of interacting spins in diamond
The field of quantum science and technology has generated many ideas for new revolutionary devices that exploit the quantum mechanical properties of small-scale systems. Isolated solid state spins play a large role in quantum technologies. They can be used as basic building blocks for a quantum computer or as ultra-sensitive magnetic-field probes which can detect the extremely weak magnetic field generated by a single proton. A major hurdle for realizing these applications is the loss of quantum coherence resulting from uncontrolled interactions with spins in the environment. In the experiments described in my thesis we studied spins associated with defect centers in diamond and used new strategies for mitigating decoherence involving advanced quantum control techniques and for fundamental studies of decoherence. We show that we can prolong the coherence time of a single spin associated with a Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) defect center in diamond with dynamical decoupling techniques. Our experiments are accurately reproduced theoretically and from this theory we conclude that, with dynamically decoupling, the spin environment can in principle be made irrelevant for the decoherence of a single spin. This removes a major obstacle for using solid-state spins in quantum science and technology. Furthermore, the dynamics in the spin environment and its influence on the NV spin is thoroughly experimentally studied. By better understanding the mechanisms behind decoherence we may one day find the answer to unresolved fundamental issues in quantum physics such as the quantum measurement problem.Kavli Institute of Nanoscience DelftApplied Science
