No full textThis report characterizes the size and scope of the New Zealand presence in the published record, highlights some of its salient characteristics, and describes its diffusion around the world.
Introduction
Despite its small size and relatively brief national history, New Zealand boasts a distinguished presence in the published record. Authors such as Margaret Mahy and Katherine Mansfield; the renowned soprano Kiri Te Kanawa; and contemporary film icons such as the actor Russell Crowe and producer Peter Jackson are just a few of the well-known names associated with New Zealand’s creative tradition, along with internationally acclaimed works such as the Oscar-nominated film Whale Rider and the Booker Prize-winning novel The Bone People. New Zealand’s presence in the published record includes many other individuals and works — some widely known, others less so — adding up to a significant contribution to the global corpus of published materials. Indeed, just as New Zealand’s iconic kiwi birds lay the largest egg in proportion to their size of any bird species in the world 1, the New Zealand contribution to the published record too seems outsized in comparison to the nation’s small geography and population

No full textWaste-to-energy conversion is a major technical, economic and environmental issue. The various thermochemical conversion techniques that complement incineration, such as pyrolysis and gasification, have been the subject of extensive research and development for many years. However, despite the large number of innovations proposed and pilot plants installed, many facilities have been proven failures, putting the brakes on the development of the sector, despite its significant potential interest. This expert report provides a global history of these past developments. It analyses the technical causes of these successes and failures. It examines 27 thermochemical waste conversion processes (pyrolysis, gasification, depolymerisation). Based on this feedback, the author makes recommendations for the development of future thermochemical waste recovery processes.La valorisation énergétique des déchets est un sujet à fort enjeu technico-économique et environnemental. Les différentes techniques de conversion thermochimique, complémentaires de l’incinération, telles que la pyrolyse, la gazéification font l’objet de recherches et développements souvent foisonnants et ce depuis de nombreuses années. Cependant, malgré la multiplicité des innovations proposées et des pilotes installés, de nombreuses installations ont fait l’objet d’échecs avérés, freinant ainsi le développement de la filière, présentant pourtant un intérêt potentiel important. Ce travail d’expert dresse un historique mondial desdits développements passés. Il analyse les causes techniques des réussites et des échecs constatés. Ainsi, 27 procédés de conversion thermochimique de déchets ont été étudiés (pyrolyse, gazéification, dépolymérisation). Basé sur ce retour d’expériences, l’auteur propose enfin des recommandations concernant le développement de futurs procédés de valorisation thermochimique des déchets

No full textPrior to serving as Chief of Police, Rick, who is a graduate of California State University- Sacramento and the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, was appointed as the Deputy Chief of the Offices of Operations, Investigations, Technical Services, and Homeland Security and Emergency Services. Rick is a co-author of the book titled Cop Talk: Essential Communicating Skills for Community Policing and is nationally recognized for his instruction in communication skills on this topic.Ms. MATSUI. Mr. Speaker, I rise today in honor of Chief Rick Braziel as he retires from the Sacramento Police Department, an organization he served admirably over three decades. As the Chief of Police since 2008 and a member of the department since 1979, Rick has been pivotal in upholding and carrying out the mission of the Sacramento Police Department and his leadership will be missed.
