Embracing the Challenges and Opportunities of Change Through Electronic Collaboration

Globalization is a key reason why an organization outsources its activities or creates virtual teams to remain competitive in today’s international market. Organizations are utilizing new technologies to become more efficient and employees frequently collaborate by using e-tools at work. Today´s workers are faced with a fast-paced work environment with frequently changing requirements and digital innovations. Keeping up with the development can be a challenge. Incorporating e-collaboration into the student learning process is, therefore, crucial to the modern learning environment as it prepares students to work in teams. This has become even more important now after the COVID-19. The pandemic has forced universities to go online at a record speed and the workforce to work from home. This study looks at the e-collaboration success, challenges, perception, and tools and delves into a quantitative study of graduate students who have been working on semester-long corporate projects in the information systems discipline

Applying Decision Theory to Quantify the Cost of Network Security Risk

    No full text
This research quantifies the maximum potential loss due to a breach of security to help decision makers understand and justify the expenses necessary to properly protect information systems and identify the optimally priced security features that will provide the maximum cost benefit ratio. The purpose is to help assess and reduce the value of risk such that it is as close to zero as possible, where companies are not spending too little or too much on security prevention. The research uses decision analysis, specifically a decision tree and influence diagram to model the problem, quantify the losses, and gauge the risk associated with network intrusions and security technologies applied to an organization. The model is designed to help decision makers balance the costs of security procedures against the potential costs of internal and external information systems misuse and computer crime whether the attack is intentional or unintentional. The methodology can be used to better plan for the prevention of attacks. The model incorporates sufficient flexibility to accommodate the different risks and associated costs faced by different organizations. The model will help managers understand and justify the expenses necessary to protect information systems properly

Principles for enabling deep secondary design

User-based redesign after implementation has been studied in many contexts gone by many different names, such as appropriation of technology, malleable design and secondary design. The phenomenon of redesigning content has mainly revolved around technologies such as Facebook, Twitter, or Wikipedia or portal-based technology with configuration abilities, with very little focus on technologies where users can change both functionality, content and the level of technology complexity. We coin this type of secondary design deep secondary design. In this paper, we investigate how to enable deep secondary design by analyzing two cases where secondary designers fundamentally change functionality, content and technology complexity level. The first case redesigns a decision model for agile development in an insurance company; the second creates a contingency model for choosing project management tools and techniques in a hospital. Our analysis of the two cases leads to the identification of four principles of design implementation that primary designers can apply to enable secondary design and four corresponding design implementation principles that secondary designers themselves need to apply.User-based redesign after implementation has been studied in many contexts gone by many different names, such as appropriation of technology, malleable design and secondary design. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The Status of Business Intelligence in Small and Medium Size Enterprises in Norway

Business intelligence has the potential to bring new opportunities to organizations. Dashboards, various reporting options, visualizations techniques, end-user self-service and data warehousing are entering society at an alarming rate. There is a push from all angles to make society digital. To ensure BI is successful, it is important for organizations to determine the critical success factors beforehand. The purpose of this study is to investigate the CSFs and their associated contextual issues that impact the implementation of BI systems. In this study IT professionals in Norway has been surveyed to determine the current state in Norway

Software Complexity and Organization of Firms’ Offshoring Activities

    No full text
How does software complexity shape software providers’ offshoring tasks, and how do such firms organize their offshoring activity? These questions are important, since the global software development market is growing rapidly, offering new opportunities for software managers and entrepreneurs to distribute their activities geographically. Based on a multi-site case study of 12 software firms, we study connections between software complexity and the offshoring strategies selected. Our findings suggest that software firms select a variety of organizational structures for their offshoring activity, and that the selection is shaped by the complexity of the software in question.peerReviewe

A Systematic Literature Review Looking at Digitizing Container Harbors

This article presents a systematic literature on the use of information technology within the field of maritime shipping. First, the review scope, the search terms, the data sources, the search process, the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the data extraction and analysis procedures are presented. The findings show that RFID is still reported to be in its infancy. Truck appointment system might only work in certain situations as truck drivers might not have a choice of when to pick up its container. There is no centralization of the operation. Creating a digital dashboard to display potential wait-time based on past days truck companies can better plan their day if they have the chance to do so. The benefits of such system are to offer real-time information to its users. Digitalization also allows for predictive analytics to take place this takes the process to another level.publishedVersio

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
