Faina Tlehuci in the history of library science

    No full text
The author has browsed the library archive, guests book, from which it split off file containing unpublished impressions and opinions about the institution and its leader, messages of congratulations on the occasion of anniversaries, the mass-media of the last century, which wrote, unfortunately, very little about a librarian who through hard work and passion for the profession has made exemplary career. Faina Tlehuci has been steering 40 years the University Library. She has deserved the title of Honorary Member of the University Senate

The Supercourse website contains thousands of lectures on global health and prevention "designed to improve the teaching of prevention." Their network includes 174 countries, and is available in no less than 30 languages. The site is located at the University of Pittsburgh and its core developers include Ronald LaPorte, Faina Linkov, Mita Lovalekar, and Eugene Shubnikov. It's a tremendous undertaking, and first-time visitors may wish to start by clicking through the "What is the Supercourse?" introduction section. After reading a bit about their work, visitors can move on to the "Supercourse Lectures" section. The lectures here are organized topically into headings that include epidemiology, public health, and special diseases. Additionally, visitors can browse the lectures by author or keywords. Further down the homepage, visitors will find the "Special Lectures" area and information for potential authors who would like to become part of this initiative

The Faina Greenstone Belt (FGB) is a NW-SE/SW (strike/dip), 50 km length and 6 km outward width structure, located in the Goiás Archean Block, a Granite-Greenstone terrain inserted in the Inner Brasilia Fold Belt, central Brazil. The Goiás Archean Block hosts five Greenstone Belts Terrains (Crixás, Guarinos, Pilar, Serra de Santa Rita and Faina), the first three host proved gold deposits that are currently exploited, whilst Santa Rita and Faina remain under explored. Despite being under surveyed the FGB shows many vestiges of past gold exploitation, such as various shaft works from Brazilian colonial period, such those of Cascavel Project, and more recent activities such as the disabled Sertão Mine. Orinoco Gold is currently the main player in the mineral surveying in the area; this final academic work was developed by the author during a trainee period at the exploration company. The work was a detailed (1:10.000) geological and structural mapping of a 40 km2 area in the north portion of the FGB, westwards of Santa Rita (Jeroaquara) village. The interest in this region goes by the fact that it was registered significant gold, silver, chromium and copper grades by chip sampling and whole rock analysis in this area. Also, the area is just southwards of Eliseu Target (in the same structural trend), where whole rock analysis and drilling core showed important gold occurrences. The work allowed delineating a complex stratigraphic and structural setting for this portion of the FGB. The rocks of the area are structured as four tectonic domains separated by major NW-SE/SW (strike/dipdir), NE vergence thrust faults. In the studied area these faults cause significant tectonic truncations that dictate the outcrop pattern in this part of FGB. Also macroscopic folds mapped in the area, related to various deformational phases, influences in the rocks exposition in the area.

Advancements in the use of blood tests for cancer screening in women at high risk for endometrial and breast cancer

    No full text
Several years ago, it was argued that the identification of serum biomarkers is one of the most promising approaches for the detection of early-stage malignant or even premalignant lesions. In this review, the need to establish better monitoring protocols is described for obese women who are at higher risk for the development of malignancies commonly associated with excess weight; specifically endometrial and postmenopausal breast cancer. These cancers have been chosen for this review article as our aim was to focus on female cancers that have been linked with obesity. Cancer screening is essential in detecting disease in its earliest stage in order to reduce morbidity and mortality; however, effective screening is not available for many cancer types. Even for cancers that have effective screening protocols available, there are barriers to screening in obese individuals, such as reduced mobility and embarrassment. These barriers often delay screening in these vulnerable population groups, leading to detection of the disease at a more advanced stage and ultimately leading to a poorer prognosis. As of today, biomarkers do not replace but augment imaging and other existing screening approaches. Future development of blood- or urine-based biomarkers as a way to screen individuals at high risk for certain cancers may prove to be an excellent method for overcoming the barriers that individuals at high risk are facing today. The overall purpose of this manuscript is to provide an overview of screening techniques and to identified barriers and alternate biomarker-based approaches for improvement of endometrial and breast cancer screening in obese women.</jats:p

NEW DIRECTIONS IN THE QUALITY CONTROL OF EPIDEMIOLOGICAL LECTURES ON THE INTERNET

Finding high quality materials for the preparation of epidemiological lectures is a serious challenge for epidemiologists and public health professionals across the world. The emergence of the Internet in the early 90's offered a way to ease the access to the epidemiological lectures; however it also raised important questions about the quality of the educational lectures which are freely available on the Internet. In this research, we analyzed the quality of epidemiological lectures in the Global Health Network Supercourse lecture library. We selected a random sample of 100 lectures in the Supercourse that accumulated at least 3 reviews from the visitors of the Supercourse sites. We found 7 experts, leading researchers in the field of public health and medicine, who were also very experienced in reviewing papers for journals. These experts evaluated the same set of 100 lectures and gave us their expert opinion on their quality. Overall, the lectures were rated positively by both expert and the Supercourse reviewers. Although t-test indicated that the difference between the means was statistically significant, this difference is not meaningful due to large sample size. Kappa statistic and intraclass correlations indicated that inter rater agreement for experts and non-experts was surprisingly low (less than 0.4). We also observed HALO affect with overall score being a good predictor of other scores. Our findings were consistent with existing research in the area of peer review, demonstrating low inter rater agreement. This poor inter rater agreement was demonstrated for the first time for the Internet lectures. Our findings suggested that questionnaires assessing the quality of the Internet lectures may actually be replaced by one rating, similar to the system utilized in Amazon.com or hotel ratings. This research was significant for the field of public health because it was one of the first efforts to evaluate the quality of epidemiological lectures on the Internet. The quality of lectures on the web has rarely been assessed scientifically for epidemiological and public health lectures. Future research in this area may need to concentrate on alternatives to the peer review system
