    Biogeography of Mindoro mosses

    The moss flora of Mindoro Island was updated based on the 2004–2006 expeditions conducted by the author. The island’s moss flora now consists of 282 species in 128 genera and 39 families, which is higher than Palawan but far less than those of Luzon and Mindanao. Generally, the flora is most abundant in the eastern rainy part of the island, especially along mid-elevations on the east-facing slope of the central mountain range in the transition zone between montane and mossy forests. Moss diversity is also greater in riverine forests than in inland forests at low elevations. Only three moss taxa, Rhaccocarpus alpinus, Dicranoloma daymannianum and Distichophyllum noguchianum, have their Philippine range restricted to the island. Distichophyllum noguchianum is a Philippine endemic. Floristically, the Mindoro moss flora is identified more with Luzon within the Philippine archipelago, while its sharing of other widespread Malesian taxa reinforced its role as an integral component of the Malesian flora. Reports of taxa with Australasian affinity show growing evidence for a Gondwanan influence on the island moss flora, although a tenuous one. Likewise, the presence of moss taxa such as Acroporium johanneswinkleri, Cryptogonium phyllogonioides and Glyptothecium sciuroides in Mindoro, reinforce the important role of Palawan as link in the exchange of biota between Mindoro, Borneo and Peninsular Malaysia during the Pleistocene. Finally, the importance of the island in enriching the Philippine flora and the necessity to protect its remaining forests are discussed

    Substantial moss collections have been made in Bicol peninsula and neighbouring Catanduanes Island, which form a special focus in the southeastern part of Luzon, the Philippines\u27 largest island. Moss diversity in the study area has now increased to 124 genera and 292 species. As expected, the moss flora has a predominant Luzon character, wherein about 34 species (11.64%) are restricted to Luzon, while about 18 species (6.16%) are new to the study area. Three species: Phyllodon lingulatus (Cardot) W. R. Buck, Aerobryopsis leptosigmata (Mull. Hal. ex Broth. & Geh.) M. Fleisch., and Calyptothecium squarrosulum Nog. & B. C. Tan are restricted to the study area, while one species, Acroporium convolutum (Bosch & Sande Lac.) M. Fleisch., previously reported for the Philippines but without a documented locality, is reported here with a locality information. Calymperes couguiense Besch., Leptotrichella sumatrana (Dixon) Ochyra, Papillidiopsis macrosticta (Broth. & Paris) W. R. Buck & B. C. Tan, Physcomitrium sphaericum (C. F. Ludw.) Furnr., and Sematophyllum phoeniceum (Mull. Hal.) M. Fleisch. are new Philippine records

The moss flora of Zambales Mountain Range of Luzon Island, Philippines is updated based on recent and herbarium collections and is found to consist of 268 species in 126 genera. The Zambales collections yield Ectropothecium sp., a probable new species and six new records for the Philippine moss flora: Ectropothecium callichroides, E. filicaule, E. planulum, Neckeromnion calcutense, Papillidiopsis stissophylla, and Splachnobryum oorschotii. Likewise, Gammiella tonkinensis, Gymnostomiella longinervis, Leucobryum arfakianum, and Rhaphidostichum bunodicarpum are new records for Luzon Island. Additionally, the affinity of mosses in Zambales Mountain Range to other known floristically distinct areas and islands in the archipelago is discussed

    A recent review of the distribution patterns of Philippine mosses is presented. Interpretation about the distribution of local moss flora through correlation with information from the latest plate tectonic history of the archipelago, which has its beginning from the Oligocene period, is discussed. Long distance and chance dispersal as alternative explanations for local moss distribution are also supported

    New Philippine moss records for Luzon and Mindanao Islands

    Introduction. The Philippine moss flora is updated and this shows that its richness and diversity is far from fully understood. Methods. The status of 15 new records has been verified through recent publications. Type specimens of these new records were also examined to confirm their identity. Voucher specimens have been deposited in PNH. The taxa are listed in alphabetical order for ease of referencing. Key Results. Fifteen new records for Luzon and Mindanao Islands are reported, derived from recent and older collections held in the Philippine National Herbarium (PNH).: Breutelia pendula (Sm.) Mitt., Chaetomitrium cucullatum Dixon, Ectropothecium filicaule M.Fleisch., Ectropothecium pseudocyperoides M.Fleisch., Entodon scariosus Renauld & Cardot, Hypnum plumaeforme Wilson, Leptodontium flexifolium (Dicks.) Hampe, Leucobryum sumatranum Broth. ex M.Fleisch., Oxyrrhynchium savatieri (Schimp. ex Besch.) Broth., Pelekium minusculum (Mitt.) Touw, Rhodobryum ontariense (Kindb.) Paris, Rhizogonium hattorii Nog., Sanionia uncinata (Hedw.) Loeske, Schlotheimia emarginatopilosa Herzog and Wijkia surcularis (Mitt.) H.A.Crum. Chaetomitrium cucullatum and Ectropothecium filicaule are reinstated as species. Leptodontium flexifolium and Sanionia uncinata are new generic and species records for the Philippines. Conclusions. These reported updates in Philippine moss flora indicate the importance of continued studies of unidentified bryological collections at PNH and elsewhere. Likewise, the necessity of field collecting to improve knowledge of the Philippine flora is also highlighted. © 2019, © British Bryological Society 2019

    The mossflora of Camiguin Island, Philippines and their floristic relations to some adjacent islands in the archipelago

    The moss flora of Camiguin Island, based on a 2007 expedition conducted by the author, totaled 129 species in 66 genera and 29 families. This represents 17.36% of the 743 moss species and 26.83% of the 246 genera of mosses reported for the Philippines (Linis & Tan 2008). Of these, one taxon, Aerobryopsis cochlearifolia Dix., is reported for the first time in the archipelago. Floristically, Camiguin moss flora is identified more with Mindoro and Luzon within the Philippine archipelago. Likewise, the presence of moss taxa such as Glossadelphus hermaphroditus Fleisch. and Orthomnion javense (Fleisch.) T. Kop. highlights the role of Mindanao in enriching the moss flora of Camiguin Island. Finally, the importance of remaining forests on the island as a proposed protected area is discussed

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
