Larry and I thought that some musings about canal lining might be of some interest for some of you USCID newsletter readers. As you know, there are many canal lining techniques – especially if one considers the wide assortment of internationally used lining methods

Wall treatments for aeroacoustic measurements in closed wind tunnel test sections

    No full text
Aeroacoustic tests in closed wind tunnels are affected by reflections in the tunnel circuit and background noise. Reflections can be mitigated by lining the tunnel circuit. The present study investigates if lining exclusively the most accessible segment of a closed wind tunnel circuit, in particular the test section, is an approach which improves acoustic measurements. Literature shows that a wind tunnel lining material should have high acoustic absorption, low inertial resistivity and low surface roughness. Therefore, the test section of TU Delft's closed Low Turbulence Tunnel is lined with melamine foam wall liners. A total of 4 test section configurations were tested: baseline; test section with lining on the floor and ceiling; test section with lined side--panels; and test section lined at all surfaces (floor, ceiling and side--panels). An omnidirectional speaker is used for evaluating the wind tunnel's acoustic performance. A geometric modelling algorithm, based on the mirror-source method, is used to predict the effect of lining on primary reflections in the test section. In addition, reflections in the test section and in the tunnel circuit are characterized experimentally. The results show that the closed loop of the tunnel circuit is responsible for a long reverberation time in the test section. However, reflections inside the test section itself are the dominant source of acoustic interference at the microphone array location. The low fidelity geometric modelling algorithm is shown to be a valuable approach for an initial estimation of the acoustic benefit of lining, for both flow--off and --on conditions. Lining of the test section walls significantly reduces reflections from the reference source, as well as the aerodynamic background noise that reaches the array.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Wind EnergyAircraft Noise and Climate EffectsControl & Operation

    The Silver Lining of Downsizing

    No full text
Downsizing can have a silver lining - if you look for it. All types of work settings are experiencing it. How do you make it a positive experience? A silver lining may come in the form of fulfilling the work needs and aspirations of personnel who remain on staff. Staff who acquire or absorb new tasks are able to find new efficiencies in old processes. On the other hand, your staff may now have a rationale for ceasing to do things they don't need to do. Downsizing creates these types of opportunities

Author, publisher and bookseller : a tripartite synergy in Nigerian book industry

    No full text
This work is about the roles of Author, Publisher and Bookseller in Book development in Nigeria. The paper started by delving into the history of Book Publishing in Nigeria after which it proceeded by defining who an author, a publisher, and a bookseller is and expatiated on the indispensable roles of these key actors in Nigerian Book Industry and in the emerging Information Society. Furthermore, the various constraints to book development were identified while the paper advised on how the Book Industry can be further promoted in Nigeria. However, the paper concluded and made recommendations on how the Book sector can help in enhancing scholarship in the country

    Evaluation of innovative sprayed-concrete-lined tunnelling

    No full text
The front-shunt tunnel was the first tunnel of the Terminal 5 project at Heathrow to be constructed, and was the first section of sprayed-concrete-lined (SCL) tunnel to be constructed using the method known as LaserShell. This innovation represented a significant deviation from the methods previously used in SCL construction. Therefore it was subjected to a careful examination before and during construction using sophisticated 3D numerical modelling and monitoring during construction. The paper presents typical results from surface settlement levelling, inclinometers and extensometers, pressure cells and tunnel lining displacement measurements, and comments on the performance of the methods and instruments used. The paper then presents the methodology and typical results of the numerical modelling, and shows that the predictions of displacements and stresses compared well with the field measurements. In terms of the control of ground deformations and structural safety the tunnel performed well

Structural design model for tunnels in soft soils: From construction stages to the long-term

    No full text
In bored tunnel design, most recent structural design models for tunnel linings concentrate on the behaviour of the tunnel lining in the long-term. The load on the tunnel lining in these models is derived from the original soil stresses, often simplified for a single homogeneous layer. Field observations show that higher loads may occur in the initial hours after the assembly, that might effect the tunnel lining and that soil layers with different stiffnesses may have a negative impact on the internal forces of the tunnel lining. This paper proposes a new model for these early construction stages and also includes a more accurate model which explicitly models the impact of multilayered soils. The change of internal forces in the tunnel lining from the initial construction time to the long-term is investigated with this model. Validations with field observations and other analysis results at time of construction and the long-term confirm that the new structural analysis models can accurately predict internal forces in the tunnel lining. The analysis results also show that internal forces in the tunnel lining have an increasing trend in time and become stable in the long-term and accord with field observations.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Geo-engineerin

handHand lining - usually done in August or September - was to use a heavy lead with two hooks attached to it - the lead took the hooks to the bottom - then you would pull up the lead about 3 or 4 feet off the bottom - and keep the line moving up and down so that the moving bait would attract the fish.GMS Feb 76Used I and SupNot usedWithdraw
