Analysis on the Deflection of Multilayered Ceramic Capacitors under High Temperature and Uniform Pressure
The complicated process may cause the internal defects of multi-layered ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) and result in the malfunctions. This work aims to investigate the deformations of MLCCs that composed of nearly a hundred of BaTiO3 and Ni electrode films interleaved and stacked due to high pressure at elevated temperature.
This study focuses on theoretical and numerical analyses. Classical laminated plate theory, linear elastic assumptions and equilibrium equations were adopted. Associated with the texts by Timoshenko and practical manufacturing process, three types of boundary conditions were considered, such as all edges simple-supported, two opposite edges simple-supported and the other two free, and four edges free. Also, two more conditions need be added, including four fixed points at corners and the elastic foundation at bottom. The numerical simulation by finite element method (FEM) incorporated with software ANSYS was used to obtain the displacement field of MLCCs due to high pressure at elevated temperature. The MLCCs were divided into nine regions with suitably different boundary conditions.
Compared with the numerical results the analytical solutions of nine regions were found satisfactorily acceptable, i.e., the errors were about 0.1% - 6.2% for the boundary conditions of four edges free and four corners fixed. The errors about 0.13% - 6.15% were also acceptable for the boundary conditions of two opposite edges simple-supported and the others free. However, the analytical solutions did not agree with the numerical results for the case of all the boundary conditions simple-supported. Finally the proposed theoretical methodology provides an analytical method alternatively, instead of FEM and ANSYS, to analyze a nearly hundred layered MLCCs
Investor Sentiment and the Effect of Customer Satisfaction on Stock Returns
Motivated by a lack of understanding for how investors\ue2 emotional states affect their perceptions and valuations of customer satisfaction, this study separates investor sentiment into optimistic, neutral, and pessimistic states following a direct retail investor sentiment index and examines whether and how sentiment influences the stock market\ue2s reaction to ACSI (American Customer Satisfaction Index) information. The empirical results show that the Strong-ACSI Portfolio, i.e., the portfolio consisting of firms with strong ACSI performance, and the long-short portfolio strategy based on the ACSI information all generate positive abnormal returns. By considering investor sentiment, the Strong-ACSI Portfolio and the long-short ACSI portfolios all achieve significant abnormal returns in the pessimistic periods. From 1996 to 2011, a value-weighted Strong-ACSI Portfolio creates Carhart\ue2s abnormal returns of 0.71% per month, or 8.52% per year when investors have pessimistic sentiment. The value-weighted long-short portfolio also generates Carhart\ue2s abnormal returns of 0.26% per month, or 3.12% per year in the pessimistic state. Further adoption of alternative methods and various portfolio criteria confirms that the mispricing of ACSI exists in pessimistic states. The evidence suggests that it is possible to beat the market with investment strategies based on customer satisfaction, especially when investors hold their pessimistic beliefs about the market. The main contribution of this study is that higher intangible assets such as having highly satisfied customers provide firms an insurance-like protection against market pessimism
The asymmetric effect of advertising on momentum strategy
In financial field, there are many issues which discuss the interaction between investor attention, momentum strategy, and investor sentiment nowadays. Hou, Peng, and Xiong (2009) find that the investor attention would influence the performance of momentum strategy, but they don\ue2t take investor sentiment into consideration. Antoniou, Doukas and Subrahmanyam (2013) search the asymmetry effect of the investor sentiment on the performance of momentum strategy, however; they consider the spreading speed of information but ignore the influence of investor sentiment on momentum strategy. Currently, the relation between these issues is still unknown, thus; this article considers both two issues, cross section characteristics\ue2the influence of investor attention on momentum strategy, and time series features\ue2the influence of optimistic and pessimistic sentiment on momentum strategy.
This article adopts advertising expense as the proxy variable of investor attention and then discusses the influence of investor attention on momentum strategy in different investor sentiments. The results display as follow:
1. The higher degree impression of corporation on investors follows the more its advertising expense, attracting more investor attention. In the short term, if the stock gains higher degree of investor attention, the investors tend to overreact toward the past negative return. The highest advertising expense quintiles significantly generate 0.81% profits. In the long term, the lower investor expected return follows the higher degree of investor attention, causing the disappearance of investor overreaction. The profit of momentum strategy would reverse to negative from the 13 month to 36 month.
2. In optimistic sentiment, the advertisements would fascinate the investors more concentrate on the good news. Moreover, the limitation of selling stocks in stock market causes losers to continue underperformance and prolong the period of momentum strategy of earning excess profit. The profit of highest advertising expense quintiles portfolios momentum strategy in optimistic sentiment is higher than that in pessimistic sentiment. In the holding period of 1, 3, and 6 month, the highest advertising expense quintiles portfolios momentum strategies of optimistic sentiment would separately gain 1.45%, 2.87%, and 5.24% profits higher than those in pessimistic sentiment
The asymmetric effect of fund investor sentiment on stock market returns
We use U.S. equity fund flows as a measure of fund investor sentiment to investigate whether the individual investor sentiment is positively correlated with stock market returns. Moreover, we refer to the rule of Stambaugh, Yu and Yuan (2012) to distinguish between optimistic sentiment periods and pessimistic sentiment periods by the median of the measure of fund investor sentiment, and investigate whether this effect is asymmetric in optimistic/pessimistic sentiment periods.
First, the result indicates that a significant and positive contemporaneous correlation between fund investor sentiment and stock market returns. Secondly, this effect is asymmetric in optimistic/pessimistic sentiment periods, and it is stronger in optimistic sentiment periods than in pessimistic sentiment periods. The economic implications of our study are that the herding purchase of individual investors in optimistic sentiment periods pushes stock market returns arising much easier than in pessimistic sentiment periods. Thirdly, there is no evidence to prove that the measure of fund investor sentiment can predict subsequent stock market returns, which means the measure of fund investor sentiment only affects stock market returns temporarily
Sexual Politics in Margaret Atwood\ue2s Dystopian Novel The Handmaid\ue2s Tale: The Oppression and Resistance of Women
This thesis explores the oppression of women within the gender institution of patriarchy in Margaret Atwood\ue2s dystopian novel The Handmaid\ue2s Tale, and their resistance to this male-dominated society. As a feminist writer, Atwood is very much concerned about the issue of gender, which she foregrounds in The Handmaid\ue2s Tale. In my analysis, I apply some theories of radical feminists and the French feminist who devote themselves to the study of gender--Kate Millett, Adrienne Rich, Catherine MacKinnon, and Hélène Cixous. Millett focuses on women\ue2s subordinated position that leads to women\ue2s oppression in patriarchy. Rich and MacKinnon focus on how women are controlled and oppressed in maternity and sexuality within the patriarchal society of gender inequality. Cixous challenges the validity of gender by pointing out its characteristic fluidity through creating woman\ue2s own writing in order to redefine female selfhood for women\ue2s resistance.
The thesis is composed of five chapters. The Introduction presents the background materials about Atwood and The Handmaid\ue2s Tale, the motivation of the thesis, and the resonance between The Handmaid\ue2s Tale and certain feminists\ue2 theories. The first chapter analyzes the formation of the unbalanced power relations between the sexes in which women are subordinated to men through the socialization. Moreover, because of women\ue2s subordination, women are modulated as mothers through socially institutionalized motherhood such as the Wives and the Handmaids in Gilead. The second chapter further analyzes how women are formulated as sexual objects through the experience of sexual objectification within the institution of heterosexuality, such as the mistresses and the prostitutes of Gilead. The third chapter discusses how female orality empowers women to resist their patriarchal society in The Handmaid\ue2s Tale. The protagonist Offred, by \ue2writing her voice\ue2 through storytelling, resists patriarchal oppression, restores her body and self, and transforms herself from a victim in a claustrophobic world of male domination to a heroine of femininity. Moreover, her act of writing by her voice also reflects women\ue2s histories of repression, which should be reconstructed in a culture in which only males are literate. Offred\ue2s oral act of storytelling, to the reader, may also signify her resistance to reconstruct women\ue2s repressed histories. The concluding chapter reiterates the research of The Handmaid\ue2s Tale with a synthesis of Atwood\ue2s and some of the prominent feminists\ue2 points of view, namely Millett\ue2s, Rich\ue2s, MacKinnon\ue2s and Cixous\ue2s, toward the oppression and resistance of women within the institution of gender. This study hopes to explore and thus illuminate the nature, the functioning, the operation of socially constructed male domination, and then proceed to search the possible solution, or the \ue2voice;\ue2 however feeble it is, the author, or the protagonist conceives to defy the oppression imposed on women
