Unveiling Melodies in Shadows: An Analysis of Swedish Female Composer Amanda Maier’s Sonata for Violin and Piano in B Minor
No full textAmanda Maier (1853−1894), a pioneering Swedish violinist and composer of the late nineteenth century, holds a unique place in music history as the first-ever female music director in Sweden. Despite her significant achievements, her compositions have remained relatively unknown. Therefore, the document aims to illuminate Amanda Maier's violin works, focusing on investigating her violin sonata in terms of violin performance and pedagogy. Specifically, the study offers insights into the performance techniques employed and provides other pertinent pedagogical suggestions for each movement. The document features an introductory chapter and a review of the historical context of Maier's life and the violin sonata. Subsequent chapters shift the focus to performance practice and pedagogical suggestions with theoretical analysis. One distinctive feature of the study is the inclusion of practice exercises composed originally by the author, tailored specifically to the techniques found in the sonata. These exercises aid practitioners in incorporating Maier's violin sonata into their program. The study assists violinists in diversifying their performance and teaching literature. It seeks to inspire renewed appreciation for Amanda Maier's artistic legacy because it is important to recognize the remarkable contributions of women in the classical music industry, and Amanda Maier, an underrepresented composer, exemplifies this. No full textHow can a toy help foster curiosity for technology, trains and the railway? The project aim was to design a toy based on science for qualitative play, that can fit in as a product sold at the Swedish Railway Museum shop, with the needs of the children, their parents and the museum in mind. The method used was a reflection-in-action design process, with analysis, synthesis and evaluation. Design sketching, CAD modeling and 3D-printing helped communicate and evaluate ideas, until a solution was found. The result is a a wooden toy were you are encouraged to explore and gain understanding of mechanisms and the transferring of mechanical force. There is a base plate shaped to resemble a steam locomotive, with holes where gears of different sizes and train wheels can be placed on axles. During user testing with children aged 1-6 years, the toy seems to succeed in encouraging qualitative play involving thinking, problem solving, creativity, imagination, as well as some verbalization and social interaction. Method: The study employed a quantitative method with a deductive approach and aweb-based survey. The sample included 4218 Swedish real estate brokers, with 470 responsesfor analysis. Statistical software JASP was used for descriptive analyses, correlation analyses,and T-tests. Results and Conclusion: Both internal and external factors were found to be important, withstrong correlations between work environment and performance. An interesting discoverywas that internal motivation, such as interest in challenges, influenced goal achievement. Thestudy also emphasized the importance of a positive work environment in promoting bothperformance and well-being. Contribution of the Thesis: The study provides insights into the importance of motivationalfactors for performance and well-being. Both internal and external factors are crucial, with anemphasis on creating an environment that supports autonomy and engagement. Suggestions for Further Research: Future studies could investigate gender differences,geographical factors, and conduct longitudinal studies to understand changes over time. She is the author of a chapbook, Songs of Brujería (Big Lucks September 2019) and Co-Editor of Of Color: Poets’ Ways of Making: An Anthology of Essays on Transformative Poetics (The Operating System 2019). Her debut poetry collection, Where My Umbilical is Buried, is forthcoming in March 2023 with Sundress Publications. Amanda has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize, Best New Poets, and Sundress Publications’ Best of the Net. She was a 2016 AWP Intro Journal Project Award Winner, 2018 Best of the Net Winner, a finalist for the 2015 Gloria Anzaldúa Poetry Prize, and a finalist for the 2017 Poetry Society of America Chapbook Fellowship. Her poetry can be read in print and online journals such as Hayden’s Ferry Review, Puerto del Sol, The Southampton Review, and others.
