Musikstädte as real and imaginary soundscapes: urban musical images as literary motifs in twentieth-century German modernism
PhDThis study examines German literary images of musical life as part of the wider sound identity of the modern German city at the turn of the twentieth century. Focussing on a forty-year period from 1890 to 1930, synonymous with the emergence of the modern German metropolis as an aesthetic object, the project assesses, compares and contrasts how musical life in the Musikstädte was perceived and portrayed by writers in an increasingly noisy urban environment. How does urban musical life influence and condition city writings? What are the differences and similarities between the writings on various musical cities? Can an urban textual sound identity be derived from these differences and similarities? The approach employed to answer these questions is a new, cross-disciplinary one to urban sound in literature, moving beyond reading the key sounds of the urban soundscape using urban musicology, sensorial anthropology and cultural poetics towards a literary contextualisation of the urban aural experience.
The literary motifs of the symphony, the gramophone and urban noise are put under the spotlight through the analysis of a wide range of modernist works by authors who have a special relationship with music. At the centre of this analysis are the Kaffeehausliteratur authors Hermann Bahr, Alfred Polgar and Peter Altenberg, the then Munich-based author Thomas Mann and the lesser known René Schickele. The analysis of these particular works is framed in the music-geographical context of the Musikstadt and literary underpinnings of this topos, ranging from Ingeborg Bachmann to Hans Mayer and, once again, Thomas Mann. In analysing these texts, the methodological approach devised by Strohm, who identifies the blending of a range of urban sounds as a definition of urban space and identity, is applied. His ideas combine historical literary

The intention of this paper is to overcome an alarming polarization within the actual academic debate on the writing of the unknown author of the Corpus Areopagiticum. It discusses five exemplary problems: a. unity and diversity in God; b. theurgy in Proklos and Ps.-Dionysios; c. Porphyry, Dionysios and the “anthropological Model” for the solution of the Christological problem; d. ambivalences within the Dionysian corpus; e. the intention of the author. In the introduction the paper also touches – very briefly, it is true – upon the question, if Peter the Iberian could have been the author of that corpus, as – independently from each other – E. Honigmann and S. Nutsubidze once proposed

Almost 130 years after the publication of Adolf Hauffen's ethnographic study and collection of Gottscheer songs, the book Pesemsko izročilo Kočevske ('The Folk Song Tradition of Kočevje area') has made the treasure trove that is the folk song tradition of the wider Kočevska region, mostly written in the Gottscheer dialect, available in Slovenian. In addition to the translation of the book Die deutsche Sprachinsel Gottschee. Geschichte und Mundart, Lebensverhältnisse, Sitten und Gebräuche, Sagen, Märchen und Lieder ('The German Language Island in Kočevska Region. History and Dialect, Living Conditions, Customs and Habits, Folktales, Fairy Tales and Folk Songs', 1895), the work also contains an article by the aforementioned author (from 1896), in which he published additional folk songs and information he received after the publication of his book. This is followed by nine scholarly-critical studies by seven authors, Peter Lozoviuk, Anja Moric, Marija Klobčar, Marjetka Golež Kaučič, Zmaga Kumer, Saša Babič and Helena Ložar-Podlogar, who examine the Gottscheer folk song tradition from ethnological, folkloristic and historical perspectives. They focus on the collection of Gottscheer folk songs that formed the core of Hauffen's monograph, but also offer broader critical reflections. The book is also the first translation of the entire folk song collection from any foreign language into Slovene.S knjigo Pesemsko izročilo Kočevske je skoraj 130 let po izidu etnografske študije in zbirke kočevarskih pesmi Adolfa Hauffna zakladnica pesemskega izročila območja širše Kočevske, zapisana večinoma v kočevarskem narečju, dostopna tudi v slovenskem jeziku. Poleg prevoda knjige Nemški jezikovni otok na Kočevskem. Zgodovina in narečje, življenjske razmere, šege in navade, pripovedke, pravljice in pesmi (1895) delo vsebuje tudi članek istega avtorja (iz leta 1896), v katerem je objavil dodatne pesmi in informacije, ki jih je prejel po izidu svoje knjige. Sledi devet znanstvenokritičnih študij sedmih avtorjev, Petra Lozoviuka, Anje Moric, Marije Klobčar, Marjetke Golež Kaučič, Zmage Kumer, Saše Babič in Helene Ložar-Podlogar, ki kočevarsko pesemsko izročilo obravnavajo iz etnološkega, folklorističnega in zgodovinskega vidika. Osredinjajo se na zbirko kočevarskih ljudskih pesmi, ki je bila temeljni del Hauffnove monografije, a hkrati podajajo tudi širše kritične premisleke. Knjiga je hkrati prvi prevod celotne zbirke ljudskih pesmi iz kateregakoli tujega jezika v slovenščino
