The Research on the Adaptations of Dou E Yuan

    No full text
Guan Hanqing is recognized to be the first of "the Four People of Yuan\ue2s Drama", whose representative Dou E Yuan was evaluated by Wang Guowei, the Modern Chinese Master, as "the masterpiece equal to the other World-Class Tragedies". This works has become an immortal classic in the history of drama and literature. However, the classicization of Dou E Yuan is not from ancient times. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Guan Hanqing decreased in the status in the field of drama, and the singing of the Yuan\ue2s Drama came to an end with the death of Northern Drama, so the original appearance of Guan Hanqing\ue2s Dou E Yuan has already been lost. Nowadays, we depend on the inheritance and adaptations of Dou E Yuan from the Ming Dynasty to keep touch with this works . Thanks to the issuance of the script of Dou E Yuan and the creation of The Gold Lock in the Ming Dynasty, the story of Dou E is rescued in the literati's case and on the drama stage of the Southern Drama. In modern times, because of the high evaluation of Wang Guowei, Dou E Yuan is considered as "classic". At the end of the 1950s, Guan Hanqing was rated as "The World-Culture Celebrity", and \ue2The 700th Anniversary Campaign of the Guan Hanqing\ue2s Drama Events" was widely carried out in the mainland so that many dramas began to conduct positive adaptations of clusters, Dou E Yuan included. In the 1980s, Guo Xiaozhuang, the Master of Beijing Opera in Taiwan, founded the "Ya Yin Xiao Ji", and determined to move the Beijing Opera to the more modern stages, and Dou E Yuan, the second works of "Ya Yin Xiao Ji", was a challenge to traditional Beijing Opera. It can be said that from the end of the 1950s to the beginning of this century, the adaptations of Dou E Yuan took on abundant diversity, which was the peak period that the adaptations reached in quantity as well as quality . After entering the 21st century, with time going on , the enthusiasm to adapt Dou E Yuan has gradually retired from the contemporary stage, but there are also screenwriters to pay attention to this works, adapting it in varieties of forms ,such as movies, dramas and so on. These adaptations also have their own characteristics, trying to make new interpretations in contemporary perspectives. This thesis is based on the theme of "The Research on the Adaptations of Dou E Yuan", the full text of which is divided into six chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, introducing the research motivation, the research review and the research scope and steps. In the four chapters from Chapter 2 to Chapter 5, the different adaptations of Dou E Yuan in the Ming Dynasty and the contemporary times are mainly discussed, focusing on the previous contemporary renewal of this study. Chapter 6 , the conclusion chapter, summarizes the overall trend of Dou E Yuan, and analyzes the reason why it is gradually declining in contemporary adaptation

Aspects of macroeconomic policy with reference to the Republic of China in Taiwan

The objectives of this dissertation are threefold. The first is to examine theoretically the sustainability of a monetary policy coordination between Taiwan and the United States in the light of the trade imbalance that has existed between them since the early 1980s. Secondly, in view of the persistent trade surplus, we empirically determine whether the savings behaviour of the Taiwanese is precautionary, and if so, in which aspects, so as to propose a policy which might reduce the savings and decrease the persistent trade surplus. Thirdly, in view of accumulating government debt and potential inflation, we theoretically investigate the role of an independent central banker when fiscal discipline and the likelihood of a successful public debt stabilisation programme are taken into consideration. As regards the first point, we conclude that, in the Miller-Salmon (1985b) two-country model with different country sizes initiated with asymmetrical disturbance, a cooperative monetary policy may be sustainable when both governments precommit themselves and ignore their perceived ability to exert an influence on real exchange rates. On the second point, following Skinner's (1988) approach, we show that the household savings of Taiwan are determined by significant earnings uncertainty. Furthermore, on the basis of Hubbard, Skinner and Zeldes (1993), and the analysis of housing data in Taiwan, we find that sources of uncertainty as regards `cash on hand' include uncertainty over opportunity costs for housing, earnings uncertainty concerning standards of education, and uncertainty over expenses for medical care. Thus, we predict that an improvement in social security may well decrease the uncertainty regarding cash on hand, and may reduce the precautionary savings of the Taiwanese and hence the persistent trade surplus.</p

    Dou: distributivity and beyond

This dissertation investigates the semantic properties of the particle dou in Chinese. The standard view of it is that it is a particle that accompanies plural noun phrases and has a semantics somewhat similar (not identical) to the floated all in English. In this dissertation, I will explore in some depth several phenomena where dou seems to play a role that goes beyond distributivity. Chapter 1 introduces the standard view of dou as a distributive operator as proposed in Lin (1998) and the topics of the thesis. In so doing, the similarities and differences between dou and English all are highlighted. Chapters 2 and 3 are devoted to two topics that are not covered in Lin's original work and that seem to pose problems for his analysis. Chapter 2 discusses what I call the dou-(dis)harmony phenomenon: dou's (in)compatibility with quantifier phrases. This challenges the standard semantics of dou in that all of the quantifier noun phrases, dou-compatible or not, are presumably plural and thus should be compatible with dou. In this chapter, I first argue that previous approaches that characterize the (dis)harmony effect in terms of categories of NPs are not correct. Then I claim that this has to do with a presupposition that accompanies dou. In particular, I argue that dou is has a presupposition about expectations and I propose to build this aspect of meaning into the semantics of dou. Chapter 3 investigates dou in a structure where plurality is not needed to license dou. Instead, focus is the crucial licensing factor. This is traditionally assumed to involve the lian...dou/ye 'dou/also' structure where it has a scalar reading similar to the meaning even has in English. Researchers disagree as to whether this dou should be assimilated to distributive dou or should be treated separately. Through careful investigations into some rarely addressed properties of dou in this structure, I conclude in favor of the ambiguity view of dou. In addition, I propose to link this dou to distributive dou through context sensitivity as I developed in chapter 2. Finally, I provide a compositional semantics for lian...dou/ye based on the semantics of each individual particle. Chapter 4 extends the discussion to dou in free choice structures: dou co-occurring with renhe-NPs 'any' or wh-NPs yields a FC reading, similar to the corresponding English sentences with FC any. In this chapter, I explore the two FC structures from the perspective of English FC any and whatever on the one hand and from that of our prior discussions of dou on the other. We argue that renhe...dou is like universal any but wh...dou is neither like universal any nor definite whatever. It is suggested that dou in the two FC structures, renhe...dou and wh...dou, is related to distributive dou and scalar dou respectively, in support of our claim that there are two related but distinct dou's. Chapter 5 closes this thesis and provides some initial exploration of the interactions between dou and bare NPs. Chinese bare NPs are, basically, like English bare plurals displaying various readings in various contexts. This chapter examines the behavior of bare NPs in various contexts from the perspective of the two-dou account developed in this dissertation. This investigation, though preliminary, provides further support for our claim that dou has a presupposition about the prior expectations on the part of the speaker and that the two dou's need to be separated.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 188-193)

[[abstract]]The thesis deals with the ‘lian…dou/ye …’ construction in modern Chinese. In order to clarify the informational status of ‘lian…’, issues on topic and focus are shown in the first part of this thesis. Then, discussions on semantic functions and conversational implicatures of this construction constitute the sencond part. Lastly, the formal complexity and pedagogical instructions will be presented as well.
