The discovery of this hindwing allows to complete the description of this Chinese Cretaceous taxon, provides distinctive features from other Aktassiidae, and indicates a comparatively wide distribution of this dragonfly in northeast China

    Cranial anatomy of the iguanodontoid ornithopod Jinzhousaurus yangi from the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation of China

    The Yixian Formation (Lower Cretaceous) of Liaoning Province, China, is justifiably famous for its exceptionally preserved fauna, which includes a remarkable diversity of non−avian dinosaurs. Here, we provide the first detailed description of the cranial skeleton of the iguanodontian ornithopod Jinzhousaurus yangi. Many previously unrecorded features have been recognised, permitting a new and more robust diagnosis for this taxon, which is based on a suite of autapomorphic features. Jinzhousaurus and an unnamed sauropod represent the largest, but some of the least abundant, animals in the Jehol Biota, a situation that contrasts with many other Lower Cretaceous faunas in which large dinosaurs are common faunal components. This rarity may be due to either palaeoenvironmental constraints or taphonomic bias, although it is not possible to choose between these alternatives on the basis of current data

    Geochemistry and zircon U-Pb-Hf isotopic systematics of the Neoarchean Yixian-Fuxin greenstone belt, northern margin of the North China Craton: Implications for petrogenesis and tectonic setting

    The Yixian-Fuxin greenstone belt in the Western Liaoning metamorphic terrane is situated in the middle segment of the northern margin of the North China Craton (NCC) and is composed mainly of plagioclase amphibolites, pyroxene amphibolites and hornblende plagioclase gneisses. LA-ICPMS zircon U-Pb isotopic dating of three representative samples of hornblende plagioclase gneisses reveals that the magmatic precursors of the Yixian-Fuxin greenstone belt were formed during 2589 Ma-2534 Ma and subjected to subsequent similar to 2490 Ma metamorphism. Lu-Hf isotopic analyses of the zircons dated from the three samples yield positive epsilon Hf(t) values of +8.3 to +2.7 and T-DM from 2.76 Ga to 2.57 Ga. The youngest T-DM value is close to their crystallization ages, suggesting that they were mainly derived from partial melting of the depleted mantle materials. These zircon chronological data and Lu-Hf isotopic features indicate an important similar to 2.5 Ga episode of crustal growth in the Western Liaoning metamorphic terrane. Based on whole rock geochemical characteristics, these meta-volcanic rocks in the Yixian-Fuxin greenstone belt may be subdivided into four groups. Samples in Group #1 show high MgO contents from 7.19% to 7.93% and Cr and Ni contents of 208-395 ppm and 113-210 ppm with Mg numbers (Mg#) of 53.4 to 55.1, and are characterized by slight LREE-depleted to flat REE patterns (La/Sm)(N) = 0.77-1.05, flat patterns on the primitive mantle normalized multiple trace elements diagram, and Nb/Ta ratios between 123 and 15.9, implying that they were derived from partial melting of depleted mantle source. Samples in Group #2 also display higher MgO (7.52%-14.51%), Cr (372-570 ppm) and Ni (240-320 ppm) contents with high Mg# (53.5-70.2), low TiO2 contents (0.52%-0.64%), high Nb/Ta ratios (15.8-19.9), and have right-declined REE pattems with (La/Sm)(N) ratios from 1.73 to 3.6, and negative Nb, Ta and Ti anomalies, indicative of their derivation from partial melting of a metasomatized refractory mantle source. Samples in Group #3 show MgO content from 1.81% to 3.56% with Mg# of 35.9 to 43.5 and high Cr (1179-1280 ppm) and Ni (712-721 ppm) contents, lower Y and Yb contents (6.7-9.42 ppm and 0.640.88 ppm, respectively) and higher Nbfra ratios (18.4-21.8), and are characterized by the highest (La/Yb)(N) ratios (14.91-22.67) and negative Nb, Ta and Ti anomalies, revealing that they formed from partial melting of garnet-bearing oceanic slab, and the slab melts were contaminated by mantle peridotite and subjected to crustal contamination during their ascent. Samples in Group #4 exhibit high MgO content (5.98%-10.52%) with high Mg numbers (52.4-70.8), Cr (198-376 ppm) and Ni (112-177 ppm) contents and lower Nbfra ratios between 12.7 and 14.6, and have (La/Yb)(N) ratios ranging from 4.12 to 6.78 (lower than those of the Group #3) and strongly negative Nb,Ta and Ti anomalies, suggesting that they were derived from partial melting of mantle peridotite metasomatized by slab-derived fluids. Thus, the Yixian-Fuxin greenstones display geochemical features of the normal-mid-ocean ridge basalts (N-MORBs) (Group #1), boninite-like rocks (Group #2), adakite-like rocks (Group #3) and high magnesium andesites (HMA) (Group #4). suggesting that the protoliths of the greenstone belt might have formed in an active continental margin similar to the Andean-type orogen.     Author academic influence and manuscript acceptance:Evidence from peer review in cell press journals

    BackgroundPrior studies on peer review have largely focused on manuscript characteristics as the primary determinants of acceptance decisions. Although author academic influence is widely recognized in practice as a contributing factor, it has received limited attention in the academic literature, mainly due to data constraints.MethodsUsing a unique dataset of manuscript submissions to Cell Press journals, we examine how author academic influence relates to peer review outcomes.ResultsWe find that author academic influence is positively associated with manuscript acceptance, with this effect particularly pronounced for junior researchers.ConclusionsOur analysis indicates that author academic influence functions as a signal of a manuscript's impact, thereby enhancing its likelihood of acceptance

    Spatially resolved study of the molecular isotopologue 13CO in nearby galaxies

    Observations of 13CO are indispensable for probing physical conditions in the molecular interstellar medium (ISM) where the most commonly used 12CO emission often saturates, at the cost of weaker emission that is difficult to observe. The line intensity ratio 12CO(1-0)/13CO(1-0) (hereafter R) can be used to trace variations in optical depths determined by the physical conditions, although it can also be influenced by chemical processes. In this thesis, I investigate the 13CO emission and the line ratio R on kiloparsec (kpc) scales for a wide variety of galaxies: 11 galaxies from the CARMA STING survey and 42 galaxies from the CARMA EDGE survey. Using the combination of millimeter-wave interferometry and rich existing auxiliary data for these surveys, I study the molecular gas properties in relation to the stellar population and other ISM components within galaxies and to the global parameters of the galaxies. Among our sample, we find that the R values are higher in the interacting galaxies in the isolated galaxies. However, we do not find a strong dependence of R on global properties such as galaxy type, stellar mass, inclination, or size of the host galaxy. On kilosparsec-scales, lower R values are usually found in regions with weaker 12CO. We attribute this apparent trend to a bias against measuring large values when 12CO is weak. Limiting our analysis to the 12CO-bright regions that are less biased, we do not find that R correlates with the galactocentric distance, velocity dispersion of the gas, or the star formation rate (SFR) measured from 24 um intensity for galaxies in the STING sample. For the EDGE sample, with available IFU optical spectroscopic data at the same resolution, we investigate the relation between R and local stellar and ionized gas properties, such as the instantaneous SFR from Ha emission, gas phase metallicity derived from optical strong line diagnostics, and star formation histories resulting from spectral modeling. For the 12CO-bright regions, we find that in isolated galaxies, R slightly decreases with stellar mass surface density and increases with gas metallicity. On the other hand, there is no significant correlation between R and line width, stellar metallicity, star formation history, SFR, or dust extinction. We also obtain azimuthally averaged R of our sample by stacking multiple 13CO and 12CO spectra in each radial bin. Roughly half of the galaxies show increased stacked R with galactocentric radius, suggesting that a greater fraction of diffuse or less abundant gas contributes to the molecular gas at large radii in general. We conclude that changes in isotopic abundance due to chemical processes or nucleosynthesis do not play a dominant role in R variations on kpc scales. The resolved R is also insensitive to temperature and velocity dispersion. A changing gas density that impacts the opacity and R could account for the general trends we observe on kpc scales.
