A Wire-Driven Parallel Suspension System with 8 Wires (WDPSS-8) for Low-Speed Wind Tunnels
Based on researching into WDPSS-8, after analysing and comparing 3 support systems in wind tunnel including the strut suspension system, cable mounted system and wire-driven parallel suspension system, the following conclusions can be acquired.
1) Till now the strut support systems and rotary balances can be used in measuring the dynamic derivatives of the aircraft in low-speed wind tunnels successfully, wire-driven parallel suspension system has a great potentiality, but it is still under investigation.
2) The cable mounted system is one of suitable method for measuring the static derivatives of the aircraft in LSWT. Though it allows a large supporting stiffness, small interference of the streamline flow and a high measuring precision for large attack angle, it can not be used in measuring the dynamic derivatives.
3) Wire-driven parallel suspension system has opened a new horizon for measuring the static and dynamic derivatives of the aircraft in LSWT. Using the same system based on position control and force control in robotics, it allows to realize the free flight of the aircraft model and to obtain the static and dynamic derivatives. However, the results given in this Chapter can only be considered as a preliminary step in establishing feasibility, although the wire-driven parallel suspension system is a very interesting design, and it may be sufficiently developed into a routine practical system
The internal driving mechanism of microbial community and metabolic pathway for psychrophilic anaerobic digestion by microbial electrolysis cell
The system that microbial electrolysis cell coupled anaerobic digestion (termed MEC-AD) with metal organic framework-modified cathode was operated under different voltage levels (0–1.2 V) at 20 °C. The maximum methane yield increased to 0.23 ± 0.01 LCH4 g-1COD at 0.9 V, with 28% improvement compared to 0 V (0.18 ± 0.01 LCH4 g-1COD). Moreover, total volatile fatty acid and propionate accumulation decreased by 32% and 15% at 0.9 V, indicating the system has potential to alleviate acidity suppression. Acidogens and electroactive microorganisms was clearly enriched with increasing applied voltage. Specifically, the abundance of Smithella increased, which could degrade propionate to acetate. Methanosaeta was dominant, accounting for ca. 40.1%∼55.1% of the archaea community at 0.3–1.2 V. Furthermore, the system reinforced psychrophilic methanogenesis by activating important enzymes involved in related metabolism pathways. Overall, this study provides perspective on the future practical application for the regulation of psychrophilic AD in electrochemically integrated bioreactors
Preliminary Step Towards Wire-Driven Parallel Suspension Systems for Static and Dynamic Derivatives of the Aircraft in Low-Speed Wind Tunnels
The wind tunnel test is one important way to obtain the aerodynamic derivatives of aircrafts. These derivatives are necessary when the guidance and control systems of the aircraft are designed and when the dynamic quality of the aircraft is analyzed as well. The results of experiments of the static derivatives and dynamic derivatives of the aircraft in low-speed wind tunnels have revealed that there are some unavoidable drawbacks such as the interference of the streamline flow brought about by the strut in the traditional strut suspension system. A cable-mounted system is very suitable for experiments of the static derivatives of an aircraft, but it cannot be used in the experiments of dynamic derivatives. In order to use the same wire-driven parallel suspension system to realize the static and dynamic derivates experiments in low-speed wind tunnels, a survey of the research work addressed within the Wire-Driven Parallel Suspension Systems (WDPSS-8) project is presented in this paper. The results show that WDPSS-8 can be successfully used in experiments of static derivatives, and that it has potentiality to be used in experiments of dynamic derivatives. In the issues in the theoretical aspect the issues have been handled. However, much work should be done in the experimental aspects. The research outcomes of WDPSS-8 will help the Chinese set up Chinese brands in the field of wind tunnel tests of aircrafts
Three essays on financial markets
The first essay examines the momentum phenomenon in the sovereign CDS market. We find that from 2001 to 2015, the portfolio of sovereign CDS past three-month winners outperforms the portfolio of past three-month losers by 0.53% per month after adjusting for risk factors. The excess returns of the long-short portfolio increase with the holding period for up to 20 months, and there is no sign of mean reversion. This evidence is consistent with investors’ initial underreaction to public information, as in Barberis, Shleifer, and Vishny (1998). The second essay studies the macro-informational role of the sovereign CDS market and the way in which macro information flows between sovereign CDS market and stock and bond markets. We find that the sovereign CDS market can predict future stock index returns, government bond yields, and real economic activities. For example, a strategy that buys stock indices of countries in the top quintile (whose creditworthiness improved the most in the previous quarter according to sovereign CDSs) and sells indices from the bottom quintile generates an average return of 15% per year. Moreover, the information is flowing one way, from sovereign CDS market to stock and bond markets, but not the other way around. Our evidence suggests that stock and bond markets gradually “catch up” with the sovereign CDS market, especially during the days surrounding credit rating or outlook changes. The predictive power of sovereign CDS returns is almost entirely from their global, rather than country-specific, component. The third essay investigates the investment performance of US ethical equity mutual funds relative to the market and their traditional counterparts using a survivorship-bias-free database. We detect selectivity and market timing performance of fund managers using the models of Treynor and Mazuy (1966) and Bhattacharya and Pfleiderer (1983). Our empirical results indicate that ethical funds perform no worse than their traditional counterparts, although neither type of funds outperforms the market. We find some evidence of superior security selection and/or market timing skill among a small number of ethical and traditional funds. Matching traditional funds have slightly more abnormal performance than ethical funds.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Yaqing Xia
Zao qi Gang Ying zhi min zheng fu Hua ren yi yuan yan jiu (1843-1900): A study on the native Chinese interpreters in the early colonial Hong Kong government (1843-1900).
The Hong Kong Island was ceded to Britain in 1842. One year later, the Hong Kong Charter and the later Instructions to Sir Henry Pottinger were promulgated to establish the Hong Kong Island and its dependencies as a separate Crown Colony, beginning the British colonial rule over this former Chinese territory. Without doubt, there existed a huge language barrier between the British officials and the residents, who were overwhelmingly made up of the Chinese nationals. Communication had been a pressing and difficult problem faced by the Colonial Hong Kong Government. In the Colonial Hong Kong Government, there were some European interpreters who were in senior positions to take charge of interpretation/translation supervision. They enjoyed superior status. On the other hand, some native Chinese also acted as interpreters/translators. They were subordinate to and assisted the European interpreters/translators in the government, undertaking relatively less important and sensitive interpretation/translation tasks. Little attention has been paid to the study of the native Chinese interpreters/translators in the early Colonial Hong Kong Government, resulting in a lack of understanding of their work and contributions in the translation history of colonial Hong Kong. This dissertation studies the native Chinese interpreters as a special group in the early Colonial Hong Kong Government. By digging into first-hand historical materials, it analyzes the education background, the career paths, the achievements as well as the predicaments of this very special group of civil servants. It reveals the complexity of these interpreters as a phenomenon in the history of translation, that on the one hand, they were part of the ruling machinery of the colonial government, and on the other, they were native Chinese like the rest of the Hong Kong residents. As interpreters/translators, they were caught between two languages, two cultures, and two peoples. It is the purpose of the present dissertation to study and reveal this complexity, in the hope to provide a deeper understanding of this peculiar group of people at a peculiar stage of Hong Kong translation history. It is also hoped that it would provide some insights in the methodology of interpreters/translators studies.Detailed summary in vernacular field only.Detailed summary in vernacular field only.陳雅晴.Parallel title from English abstract.Thesis (M.Phil.) Culture and global thought: Chinese international theory in the making
In this article, the author examines the study of international relations in China, a discipline that has proliferated as the country has opened up to the rest of the world. He examines the three main trends of international thought that have become most widespread: the first, which the author calls the obverse approach, situates Chinese thought as the theoretical basis for considering a genuine worldism, thanks to traditional concepts such as Tianxia and Confucian family bonds. Secondly, there is the reverse approach, which applies Western theoretical paradigms to the concept of power in ancient Chinese thinkers; this is a theory that emphasises the hierarchy of the international system and seeks international Chinese dominance. Finally, the third is more interactive, and which constructs an intercultural, thoughtful and critical dialogue, at the same time as applying autochthonous conceptual frameworks such as Confucian relationism, and foreign ones, such as rationalism
Deep Dive in China Music Industry and the A&R Practice
Despite China\u27s ranking as the seventh biggest music market globally, few Chinese artists or bands have significant international influences. Comparing China with its neighbors, South Korea - made the viral boy band BTS a world phenomenon and started a craze of learning Korean, and Japan - have been influencing western cultures by its anime and independence music scenes, China has not been able to export any of primary modern culture. This paper takes a deep dive into understanding the root cause of China\u27s struggle of nurturing a more diverse and flourished music industry, which A&R plays a vital role in developing. By reviewing the history of music industry development in China and discussing topics on what a good A&R entails, how A&R (or lack of A&R) has impacted the music scenes, the author explores where the opportunities of A&R lie in the new streaming era.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-global-entertainment-business/1137/thumbnail.jp
Building a Common Language in Pluralist International Relations Theories
This article aims to contribute to the gradual building of a common scientific language within the world International Relations (IR) epistemic community. The author shares the objective, indicated by many leading Chinese scholars, of a pluralist IR theory that goes beyond Western-centric mainstream theories to provide a European continental perspective. Such a perspective takes stock, on the one hand, of the legacy of Gramsci, Bobbio, and Habermas, and, on the other, of the theoretical implications of European unity as a sophisticated instance of regional cooperation. Since the dialogue must be at the highest possible theoretical level, the author selects as main partners two leading theories from the increasingly rich and internally various Chinese IR scholarship: the books recently published in English by Qin Yaqing and Yan Xuetong, who represent—not only in China, but at world level—two fundamental references in the international theoretical debate. They lead two innovative approaches: Qin’s relational theory and Yan’s theory of moral realism. The author discusses their main theses and concepts regarding IRT and global governance in a free, open, and dialectic way, notably, the balance between background cultures and multilateral convergence; and the differences between the crucial concepts of hegemony, domination, and leadership, as well as alternative perspectives on global governance within a multipolar world—a new post-hegemonic multilateralism? Or a bipolar global power structure competing for leadership
