Inscription on back of monument drafted by Mao Zedong and written by Zhou Enlai commemorating martyrs of revolutionary struggle; A ten-story obelisk (stele) that was erected as a national monument of the People's Republic of China to the martyrs of revolutionary struggle during the 19th and 20th centuries. It is located in the southern edge of Tiananmen Square, to the north of Mausoleum of Mao Zedong. Commissioned by the government in 1949, it was completed in 1958. The architect of the monument was Liang Sicheng, with some elements designed by his wife, Lin Huiyin (an architect and the aunt of Maya Lin). The monument has also served as the center of large-scale mourning activities that later developed into protest and unrest, such as the deaths of Premier Zhou Enlai (which developed into the Tiananmen Square protests of 1976) and Hu Yaobang (which developed into the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989). The monument covers an area of 32,000 square feet. Source: Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (accessed 4/26/2013

Hu Jingcao on Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin

In October, CCTV’s high-definition channel broadcast a new six-hour, eight-episode documentary on the famous husband-and-wife duo Liang Sicheng (梁思成, 1901-1972) and Lin Huiyin (林徽因, 1904-1955). Liang is renowned as a pioneering architectural historian, Lin as a writer, but their presence in China’s historical consciousness defies easy categorization. Both came from prominent families (Sicheng’s father was Liang Qichao, the scholar and reformer of the late Qing and early Republican period) and they left multifaceted legacies (their son, the noted environmentalist Liang Congjie, died in Beijing on October 28; American artist Maya Lin is Huiyin’s niece.) Titled “Liang Sicheng Lin Huiyin,” the documentary was directed by Hu Jingcao (胡劲草), a 42-year-old video journalist. Like her subjects, Hu (who spent the 2000-01 academic year as a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University) seems compelled to cross cultural and national boundaries. She previously made “You Tong” (幼童), an account of the 120 boys sent by Qing officials to study in the United States in the 1870s. Like that documentary, this new work draws extensively on previously unexplored materials from both the United States (where Liang and Lin studied for several years) and China, as well as Japan. It tells much of their story through the lens of their long and close friendship with John King Fairbank and Wilma Fairbank. Their photographs and their voluminous correspondence are drawn on extensively, along with interviews of their children (Holly Fairbank and Liang Zaibing as well as Liang Congjie) and many other people who knew them. The documentary’s official site has all eight episodes available for viewing; this page has an index of YouTube links for all the episodes, most in high-definition

Lin Huiyin is a female scholar who combines talent and beauty in China in the 20th century. In February 1950, Liang Sicheng and Chen Zhanxiang jointly proposed the "Proposal on the Location of the Central People's Government's Administrative Center Area", which is known as the Liang Chen Plan. Although this scheme has not been implemented, it is often mentioned. The designers have objective understandings of Beijing's urban functions, development conditions, and spatial structure. This scheme once gave Beijing the opportunity to move towards a completely different direction from now.AR2A011Architecture, Urbanism and Building Science

Antecedents and Consequences of Competitive Aggressiveness: Identifying the Roles of Executive Socio-cognitive Factors and Firm Resource

    No full text
This research mainly addresses the question: how top management teams\ue2 (TMTs) shared characteristic shape firms\ue2 competitive behavior? Important issues, regarding what impact does aggressive competitive moves have on firm performance, is competitive action a strategic mechanism underlying TMT-performance relationship, and does the linkage between a firm\ue2s competitive behavior and its performance depend on organizational resources, are also examined. Accordingly, I draw on several theoretical perspectives to develop hypotheses that propose cognitive diversity, collective efficacy, and risk-taking propensity within the TMTs as key determinants of competitive aggressiveness, which in turn exerts a direct effect on firm performance. Furthermore, competitive aggressiveness mediates the relationship between these TMT attributes and firm performance while organizational slack moderates the relationship between competitive aggressiveness and firm performance. A model is devised and tested that examines these hypotheses in general and in the context of an emerging market, Taiwan. Findings confirm the validity of the model and afford various insights on the role of micro executive characteristics in competitive dynamics research. Finally, implications are offered on the antecedents and consequence of competitive aggressiveness
