Cihua 詞 話 Version of the Jin Ping Mei 金 瓶 梅
This research note seeks to analyze the different translation strategies of two sinologist-translators, David Tod Roy and André Lévy, when confronted with a work as complex as the Jin Ping Mei 金 瓶 梅 , and in particular their different choices regarding the translations of qu 曲 (lyrics or songs). I first analyze the uses and functions of qu in the cihua 詞 話 version of the Jin Ping Mei and then present the different points of view of the translators concerning the ideological and aesthetic values of the author and the organization of his narrative. The note also discusses their strategies when confronted with the difficulties of translation of the intertexts structured around the qu as well as the potential effects of these translation choices on their readers. Finally, the note proposes some hypotheses concerning the reasons that motivated these choices.Cette note de recherche a pour objectif d’analyser les différentes stratégies de traduction de deux sinologues-traducteurs, David Tod Roy et André Lévy, face à une oeuvre aussi complexe que le Jin Ping Mei 金 瓶 梅 , et en particulier leurs différents choix de traduction des qu 曲 (poésies chantées). Nous y analysons d’abord les usages et les fonctions des qu dans la version dite cihua 詞 話 du Jin Ping Mei, pour présenter ensuite les différents points de vue des traducteurs concernant les valeurs idéologiques et esthétiques de l’auteur et l’organisation de son récit. Sont également abordés leurs stratégies face aux difficultés de traductions des intertextes axés autour des qu, ainsi que les effets potentiels de ces choix de traduction sur leurs lecteurs. Orbital engineering of C3N monolayer to design efficient synergistic sites electrocatalyst for boosting alkaline hydrogen evolution
No full textAlkaline water electrolyzer (AWE) is one of the promising technologies for hydrogen production at the industrial level. However, energetic inefficiency and low current density impede the development of AWE. Compared with acidic conditions, the Volmer step in alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) involves extra water dissociation, whose barrier is one of the most vital reasons for the sluggish kinetics of alkaline HER. Herein, choosing C3N monolayer as an ideal theoretical model, we design several empty orbitals through intentional metal doping, and further construct synergistic sites on the C3N monolayer to accelerate both water dissociation and hydrogen adsorption for alkaline HER. The as-designed Be-doped and Cr-doped C3N monolayers exhibit rather low theoretical overpotential of 0.476 eV and 0.216 eV for alkaline HER, respectively, which are even lower than Pt (1 1 1) surface. Moreover, by comparing the water dissociation behaviors on metal-doped C3N monolayer, we find that the empty orbitals with suitable orientation and energy level are useful for promoting the water dissociation process, indicating that we can use orbital engineering strategy to regulate the adsorption strength between adsorbate and surface site. Consequently, it is reasonable to suggest that our orbital engineering strategy would significantly benefit the design of highly efficient alkaline HER electrocatalysts.This is a manuscript of an article published as Zeng, Yamei, Xu Zhang, Changzhi Ai, Caizhuang Wang, Yipu Liu, and Shiwei Lin. The explanatory power of accounting measures, EVA and MVA on stock returns: Evidence from Thailand stock market
No full textThe primary investment objective of investors is to create their wealth which is reflected in the change of stock market price and dividend yield they receive over the investment period. Thus, investors need financial tools to assess and forecast company performance before making investment decisions. Traditionally, such accounting measures as Earnings Per Share (EPS), Return On Assets (ROA), Return On Equity
(ROE) and Return On Sales (ROS) are basic tools for investors in Thailand to evaluate companies\ue2 performance in the stock market. Value based approaches such as Economic Value Added (EVA) and Market Value Added (MVA) are not widely known
among investors yet. Therefore, this study aims to examine the explanatory power of various accounting measures (EPS, ROA, ROE and ROS ) and value based measures ( EVA and MVA ) on the stock returns.
This study focuses on 190 sample companies which are representative of all listed companies in the years from 2006-2010 in terms of the spread of EPS and industry diversification. The empirical results indicate that accounting measures are
more associated with stock returns than MVA and EVA respectively. Among accounting measures, ROA provides highest explanatory power on stock return although the analysis is done separately by sector. In contrast, the results for EVA appear in some sectors and are not consistent with the past research done in other stock markets including Thailand. Thus, the analysis is extended to examine the company characteristics that have relationship between EVA and stock return. The findings indicate that EVA tends to be associated with stock return in companies that have low book to market ratio. In terms of portfolio returns, typical investing styles, such as value and growth strategies still outperform the return from MVA and EVA strategies

Predicting and comparing transcription start sites in single cell populations
No full textThe advent of 5' single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) technologies offers unique opportunities to identify and analyze transcription start sites (TSSs) at a single-cell resolution. These technologies have the potential to uncover the complexities of transcription initiation and alternative TSS usage across different cell types and conditions. Despite the emergence of computational methods designed to analyze 5' RNA sequencing data, current methods often lack comparative evaluations in single-cell contexts and are predominantly tailored for paired-end data, neglecting the potential of single-end data. This study introduces scTSS, a computational pipeline developed to bridge this gap by accommodating both paired-end and single-end 5' scRNA-seq data. scTSS enables joint analysis of multiple single-cell samples, starting with TSS cluster prediction and quantification, followed by differential TSS usage analysis. It employs a Binomial generalized linear mixed model to accurately and efficiently detect differential TSS usage. We demonstrate the utility of scTSS through its application in analyzing transcriptional initiation from single-cell data of two distinct diseases. The results illustrate scTSS's ability to discern alternative TSS usage between different cell types or biological conditions and to identify cell subpopulations characterized by unique TSS-level expression profiles
