The Shiji chapter "Guji liezhuan" (Traditions of Witty Remonstrants): A Source to Look for Rhetorical Strategiesinn Early China
The “Guji liezhuan” 滑稽列傳, found at the chapter 126 of Sima Qian 司馬遷’s (c. 145–c. 90 BC) Shiji 史記, in modern times has been considered the starting point to discuss the topic of “humour” in ancient China (Chen Wenxin), and the word guji 滑稽sometimes has been translated as “humorist” (Knechtges), someone who entertains by making people laugh. At the same time, this chapter has also been considered an historical source to analyse the figure of the court jester (Feng Yuanjun, Wang Guowei); however, the Great Historian constructed the anecdotes in a way in which the focal point of the stories had to be identified in the speeches of the characters presented. Those speeches, performed by low class individuals (mostly jesters), were linked by the author to the Six Disciplines (Liuyi 六藝) as they were conceived as important for the government of the state, and they can be classified as examples of indirect remonstrance (fengjian 諷諫) (Schaberg). The crucial point and what makes this chapter peculiar is that the remonstrances pronounced by the characters are expressed in a “humorous” way, which means they make the addressee of the rhetorical discourse laugh. This quality is identified by the word guji, then an adjective, in the title of the chapter. My paper aims to stress how Sima Qian made the term guji meaningful (a feature already pointed out by Timoteus Pokora) constructing anecdotes in which the protagonists express their issues in an entertaining way of speech and behaviour; so as to say, “humorous” here is a rhetorical quality of their speeches. My aim is also to point out that term guji so understood is peculiar only to the part supposedly written by Sima Qian. In fact, Chu Shaosun褚少孫 (c. 105–c. 30 BC), the only contributor to the Shiji who reveals himself, adding some anecdotes at the end of the chapter, understood guji more as an “humorous”-entertaining features of the characters and stories
Water sprays formed by impinging millimeter-sized droplets on superhydrophobic meshes
Impinging a millimeter-sized liquid droplet on a leaky substrate—such as a porous mesh—can cause the formation of many small droplets from the ligament fragmentation. Although this phenomenon has been widely considered as a desirable strategy to produce liquid sprays of monodisperse droplets, the underlying mechanism has not yet been completely elucidated, and the spray needs detailed characterization. Herein, we experimentally investigate the atomization phenomena occurring in the recoiling and spreading stages of impinging water droplets on superhydrophobic meshes. We show that the spray formed during droplet recoiling is stimulated by the longitudinally symmetric air cavity collapse on the superhydrophobic mesh, and thus the size of the spray formation area on the mesh is almost identical to the size of the simultaneously generated upward jet. By contrast, the water spray produced during droplet spreading is expelled under the action of the inertia-induced hydrodynamic pressure, and the size of spray formation area on the mesh exhibits a power-law dependence on the Weber number; yet, the pore geometry restricts it to take a constant value when the Weber number is sufficiently high. By performing statistical analyses on the spray droplet sizes, we further demonstrate that the mean sizes of spray droplets are mainly set by the mesh pore sizes, but the complex atomization dynamics leads to a broad size distribution, which is beyond the expectation.</p
"Seize the Dragon's Tail" - An Analytical Study of Laozi's Biography in Shiji
The biography of Laozi in Shiji is considered to be one of the most important materials for Laozi study. By using the textual research method, previous studies prove that there are several contradictions inside the biography. Based on this, some scholars claim that there is no historical Laozi ever lived. However, this traditional textual interpretation often ignores the role played by the author of the biography Sima Qian. Because of lacking enough attention to the author, the interpretation of the text contains some misunderstanding. This thesis aims to fill this void by combining the author's creative principles with the textual analysis, then find the reason why there are contradictions inside the text, and finally cast doubt on the dominant view that Laozi is only a legendary figure
The Kai Ba Lidai Shiji 开吧历代史记 an Autonomous History of the Chinese Community of Batavia/ Jakarta in the VOC Period
This essay critically examines the Kai Ba Lidai Shiji (Annals of Batavia), a Chinese history of Batavia which was written by an anonymous Chinese author around 1794 as part of the rather large corpus of Chinese archival sources about the history of the Chinese community of Batavia/Jakarta. A short introduction about earlier authors who have dealt with the text is followed by comments on the composition, structure and historical value of this unique urban history
Fan yi yu xue shu: Nihaoshi "Shi ji" Ying yi yan jiu = Translation as research : a study of William H. Nienhauser Jr.’s translation of the Shiji
Ph.D.The aim of this research is to expound on the interwoven relationship between translation and academic research, using the translation of the Shiji into English by Nienhauser and his team as a case study. The thesis proposes “academic translation” as a translational concept. It also attempts to shed light on the significance of this Shiji translation to Western Sinology and the research in early Chinese history, in particular, Sima Qian’s Shiji.Inspired by the descriptive approach in translation studies, the thesis examines various factors related with this translation. It first reviews the history of Shiji translation in the sinological world, showing how the foundation for Nienhauser’s academic translation of the Shiji has been laid, and then deals with the role of the translator through analysing the habitus of the key translator, Nienhauser. The thesis highlights the interrelationship between translation and academic research. The translator’s selection of the base text of the Shiji is investigated, and examples are given to show the influence of the translator’s critical reading of the base text and various commentaries of the Shiji. It then examines the method of close reading, and discusses the selection of key terms to further explore the interaction between translation and academic research. The thesis traces the historical development of Shiji translation and conducts textual analysis of Nienhauser’s English Shiji, reflecting the important role of this translation in the inheritance and innovation of traditional Sinology in modern times. It is in this sense that this thesis is titled “Translation as Research”. Parallel title from added title page.Thesis Ph.D. Chinese University of Hong Kong 2020.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 208-220).Abstracts in Chinese and English.Title from PDF title page (viewed on February 28, 2022).Li Li
