Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Influence of BCO2 on gene expression in mice hepatocytes
B, B-carotene-9', 10'-dioxygenase 2 (BCO2 or BCDO2) is a mitochondrial inner membrane enzyme that asymmetrically cleaves both pre- and pro-vitamin A carotenoids and xanthophylls. While the role of BCO2 is well characterized for its contribution to Vitamin A synthesis from pro-Vitamin A carotenoids (e.g., b-carotene), other functions remain poorly characterized. The purpose of this study is to examine gene expression in the livers of wild-type (WT; n=4) and BCO2 knock-out (KO; n=4) in response to high-fat (HF; 60% kcal from fat; n=2/genotype) or low-fat (LF; 10% kcal from fat; n=2/genotype) diets for four weeks. Total RNA was isolated from liver samples using a phenol:guanidinium thiocyanate solution (STAT-60, Tel-Test, Inc., TX). Total RNA concentration and integrity was determined by spectrophotometry and agarose gel electrophoresis, respectively. Prior to synthesizing complementary DNA (cDNA) with SuperScript II Reverse Transcriptase (Life Technologies, CA), total RNA was treated with DNase I (Roche, IN) to remove potentially contaminating genomic DNA. The resulting cDNA was used as a template for quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). Relative gene expression was determined by qPCR using SYBR green chemistry on an ABI-7900HT thermocycler (Applied Biosystems, CA). Genes examined in the current study include Acetyl CoA Carboxylase (ACC), Fatty Acid Synthase (FAS), Sterol Regulatory Element Binding Protein 1c (SREBP1c), Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptor alpha (PPARa), Peroxisomal Proliferator Activated Receptor gamma (PPARy), Acyl CoA Oxidase (ACOX), and Transferrin Receptor (TFRc). Cyclophilin b (Cyclo) was used as the invariant control reference gene. Results from qPCR were analyzed using the CT method to determine relative mRNA abundance. KO animals fed the HF diet exhibited reduced expression of ACC, FAS, SREBP1c, PPARa, and PPARy compared to WT animals fed the HF diet. Neither ACOX nor TFRc expression was affected by genotype or diet. Regardless of diet, the expression of PPARa, PPARy, and SREBP1c appeared to be attenuated in KO mice compared to WT mice. These results suggest that fatty acid oxidation and synthesis may be repressed in KO animals. Additional studies are needed to confirm these preliminary findings and to determine the extent to which the observed effects may change over time (e.g., longer dietary treatment period). Finally, these results indicate that BCO2 likely has important biological functions beyond its role in the asymmetric cleavage of carotenoids

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Montmorency tart cherry supplementation and exercise positively affect bone microarchitecture and biomechanics in the growing skeleton
Objectives: This study investigated the efficacy of Montmorency tart cherry (TC) alone and in combination with exercise on improving bone quality in young growing animals and the underlying mechanisms of action.Methods: Six-week-old female C57BL/6 mice were randomly assigned to 4 groups (n=12 mice/group) in a 2x2 factorial design: control AIN-93G diet (CON), CON+exercise, TC (10% w/w), or TC+exercise. The exercise consisted of treadmill running for 30 min, 5 d/wk at 12 m/min and a 5 degree incline. Body weights were recorded weekly. After 8 wks of treatment, mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) in the tibial bone marrow were quantified via flow cytometry fluorescent activated cell sorting (FACS). Trabecular and cortical bone microarchitecture in the femur and lumbar vertebrae was assessed using micro-computed tomography. Biomechanical testing was performed using finite element analysis (FEA). The relative abundance of RNA for genes involved in osteoblast and osteoclast differentiation and activity was determined using RT-PCR. Data were analyzed using a 2-way ANOVA with TC and exercise as factors.Results: At the end of the study, no differences in body weight were observed. Trabecular bone volume in the femur and spine was increased with exercise and TC (p<0.05), but there was no interaction. Cortical bone thickness in the vertebra was also increased by TC and exercise (p<0.001), but not in the femur. Trabecular bone strength and stiffness were increased in the vertebra in response to TC and exercise, but only in response to TC in the femur (P<0.001). An increase in bone marrow MSCs occurred in response to exercise (p<0.01), but not TC. However, the combination of TC and exercise reduced nuclear factor of activated T-cells 1 (Nfatc1) femur gene expression, a key regulator of osteoclastogenesis (p<0.05). TC also increased bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)2 gene expression, a regulator of osteoblastogenesis.Conclusion: Our data indicate that TC and exercise alone had positive effects on bone quality by suppressing regulators of osteoclastogenesis and increasing regulators of osteoblastogenesis. Even though the effects of TC and exercise were not synergistic, the effects of TC alone on bone were similar to and in some cases greater than exercise alone
