Developmental Timing in C. elegans Is Regulated by kin-20 and tim-1, Homologs of Core Circadian Clock Genes

    No full text
SummaryIn Caenorhabditis elegans, heterochronic genes constitute a developmental timer that specifies temporal cell fate selection. The heterochronic gene lin-42 is the C. elegans homolog of Drosophila and mammalian period, key regulators of circadian rhythms, which specify changes in behavior and physiology over a 24 hr day/night cycle. We show a role for two other circadian gene homologs, tim-1 and kin-20, in the developmental timer. Along with lin-42, tim-1 and kin-20, the C. elegans homologs of the Drosophila circadian clock genes timeless and doubletime, respectively, are required to maintain late-larval identity and prevent premature expression of adult cell fates. The molecular parallels between circadian and developmental timing pathways suggest the existence of a conserved molecular mechanism that may be used for different types of biological timing

Teaching Experientially With the Madeline Hunter Method: An Application in a Marketing Research Course

    No full text
Due to concerns about the disparity of learning and the high nonresponse rates encountered by student marketing research teams working with sponsors, the author adopted the Hunter Method to restructure his course. This method requires the use of a model onto which students can map their learning via guided practice as well as independent practice. This approach allows student teams to select different topics, but they must use identical research objectives. The author claims that it levels learning, renders learning easier for students, and enhances Instructor efficiency

Ultrasonic testing of composite materials damaged by lightning strikes

    No full text
Currently the aerospace and manufacturing industries are excessively involved with Composites as their main materials for the construction of parts. During operations, composites are prone to heat damaged that may result in delamination and debonding. After a long period of time , the composites will lose its strength properties and eventually lead to fatigue failure which is undesirable. Conventional ultrasonic testing (C-scan) can be done to locate such defects. This report will emphasize the detrimental effect of lightning strike on variable composites. Internal damage are not apparent to our naked eyes and it can only be determined by Non-destructive test like C-scan. The results obtained will show the internal damage done by different heating temperature and multiple heating. Undamaged composites are also scanned to have a comparison and also to test the integrity of the ultrasonic machine. Damage through heating with a heat gun is simulated to the actual lightning strike. Thus the heat of 1500 degree Celsius was used to heat the composites at different timing and repeated heating. Characteristics of defect areas and non-defect areas would be discussed. Results would be presented in this report with images and qualitative and quantitative analysis where applicable. This study also aims to compare the external damage with the internal damageBachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering

Revisorns självförtroende vid förhandling : en undersökning av olika faktorer med ett möjligt samband

Abstract [sv] Titel: Revisorns självförtroende vid förhandling Nivå: C-uppsats i ämnet företagsekonomi. Författare: Henrik Alvin Rydén. Handledare: Jan Svanberg. Abstract [en] Title: The auditors self-confidence in negotiation Level: Final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration Author: Henrik Alvin Rydén Supervisor: Jan Svanberg Date: 2015-05 Aim: The main thesis of this study is to describe what the relationship is between a number of factors that might be associated with self-efficacy in negotiation. These factors are transformational leadership, organizational identification, professional identification and distributive and integrative negotiation behavior. Method: The essay has a deductive approach to theory and develops several hypotheses which are then tested. The data collection is done by using questionnaires. The sample is based on 3 300 auditors in Sweden. The analysis of collected data is done using the computer program SPSS and several statistical tools: principal component analysis (PCA), correlation analysis and multiple linear regression. Result & Conclusions: Distributive negotiation behavior has, in part, a negative association with self-efficacy. The results thereby give some support for one the hypothesis even though it is not enough to provide an answer that would lead to an acceptance of the hypothesis. No findings within this sample suggest that the other constructs is associated with self-efficacy. Suggestions for future research: Efforts should be made to improve the sample using random principles instead of the convenience sample used now. In addition to the sample, there is uncertainty about the validity of one of the measurements of transformational leadership. This should primarily be the next step to see if the results from this study also are applicable outside the existing sample. Contribution of the thesis: This is one of the first studies made about self-efficacy with the auditor and negotiations as starting points. For that reason it should be viewed as a study that might point out directions for further investigations within the fields of self-efficacy and auditor and client negotiations

Economic Factors Underlying the Unbundling of Advertising Agency Services

    No full text
This paper addresses a longstanding puzzle involving the unbundling of services that has occurred over more than two decades in the U.S. advertising agency industry: How can the shift from the bundling to the unbundling of services be explained and what accounts for the slow pace of change? Using a cost-based theoretical framework of bundling due to Evans and Salinger (2005, 2008), we develop a simple model of an advertising agency's decision to unbundle its services as a tradeoff between the fixed cost to the advertiser of establishing and maintaining a relationship with an advertising agency and pecuniary economies of scale available in providing media services. The results from an econometric analysis of cross-sectional and pooled data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau for quinquennial censuses conducted between 1982 and 2002 support the key predictions of the model. We find that advertising agency establishments are more likely to unbundle if they are large and diversified in their service offerings and are less likely to do so with increasing age and greater geographical scope. We also find a strong trend toward unbundling over time, a result that is partially explained by increases in media prices over time.

Methodsx, 7, (2020): 101033, doi:10.1016/j.mex.2020.101033.The advanced instrumented GeoMICROBE sleds (Cowen et al., 2012) facilitate the collection of hydrothermal fluids and suspended particles in the subseafloor (basaltic) basement through Circulation Obviation Retrofit Kits (CORKs) installed within boreholes of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program. The main components of the GeoMICROBE can be converted into a mobile pumping system (MPS) that is installed on the front basket of a submersible or remotely-operated-vehicle (ROV). Here, we provide details of a hydrothermal fluid-trap used on the MPS, through which a gastight sampler can withdraw fluids. We also applied the MPS to demonstrate the value of fixing samples at the seafloor in order to determine redox-sensitive dissolved iron concentrations and speciation measurements. To make the best use of the GeoMICROBE sleds, we describe a miniature and mobile version of the GeoMICROBE sled, which permits rapid turn-over and is relatively easy for preparation and operation. Similar to GeoMICROBE sleds, the Mobile GeoMICROBE (MGM) is capable of collecting fluid samples, filtration of suspended particles, and extraction of organics. We validate this approach by demonstrating the seafloor extraction of hydrophobic organics from a large volume (247L) of hydrothermal fluids. • We describe the design of a hydrothermal fluid-trap for use with a gastight sampler, as well as the use of seafloor fixation, through ROV- or submersible assisted mobile pumping systems. • We describe the design of a Mobile GeoMICROBE (MGM) that enhances large volume hydrothermal fluid sampling, suspended particle filtration, and organic matter extraction on the seafloor. • We provide an example of organic matter extracted and characterized from hydrothermal fluids via a MGM.We dedicate this work to Dr. James P. Interview with David Webber: Reflections on the Past, Present, and Future of Labor\u27s Capital

ALVIN VELAZQUEZ: Good afternoon! My name is Alvin Velazquez. I am an Associate General Counsel at the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), where for the last fifteen years I have given advice on bankruptcy, corporate law matters, and tech matters. I’m also an adjunct professor at Georgetown Law School where I have taught employment law and am teaching a seminar called Systemic Racism, Colonialism, and Bankrupt Governments.1 Before arriving at SEIU I worked as a litigation associate at several large law firms. I also admit, rather sheepishly, that I am one of the few graduates of Cornell in the labor movement who did not attend the Industrial and Labor Relations school, but rather am a product of its government department who then attended Harvard Law School. I want to thank Claire Hill for organizing this excellent symposium and inviting me here to conduct this interview. I am really excited to be joined by David Webber, the author of The Rise of the Working-Class Shareholder: Labor’s Last Best Weapon. David Webber is a familiar name in the corporate governance world, and among labor practitioners of capital stewardship due to his prolific scholarship examining labor and its capital. He is a professor and Paul M. Siskind Scholar at Boston University, and one of the best thinkers out there concerning the interaction of how labor unions have engaged and incorporated corporate governance into their thinking. His book has received reviews or otherwise been covered in the New York Review of Books, the Financial Times, Forbes, Dissent, the National Review, C-SPAN’s BookTV, Bloomberg Radio, Publishers Weekly, the Harvard Law School Forum on Corporate Governance and Financial Regulation, the Harvard OnLabor Blog, and elsewhere. It has also been the subject of op-eds for the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the Washington Post. Finally, his book is assigned as part of the core curriculum for the Harvard Trade Union Program. David did his undergraduate work at Columbia University and obtained his law degree at N.Y.U. Law where he was a member of its law review. Even though I had nothing to do with it being part of the core curriculum for the Harvard Trade Union Program, I recommend his book because it tells a sweeping story of where labor’s use of capital has been, and provides some important suggestions for where labor’s capital should be going. It is highly accessible to labor practitioners, finance practitioners, and legal audiences. On a personal note, let me just say that reading your book felt like a trip down memory lane for me. You really described what was going on in the labor capital stewardship space over the course of my career in a way that I had not conceived of previously. When you are doing the work on a day-today basis it is difficult to reflect. A lot of the time you are just trying to get things done. However, your book really helped me reflect on how far the conversation concerning labor’s role has changed since I started doing this work in 2008. It also provided me with some new ways of discussing the work that I do with our members. Let’s get started with some general questions to kick off our interview. Can you tell us what motivated you to write the book
