Scaling up qualitative data: with Professor Ken Benoit
Professor Benoit is the Principal Investigator in an ERC funded project QUANTESS developing innovative methods for the quantitative analysis of textual data in the social sciences. He is the co-author with Paul Nulty of the R software package for text analysis “quanteda”, and working on a book Quantitative Text Analysis Using R covering methods for managing, processing, and analysing textual data using the R programming language. He has taught quantitative text analysis extensively and has published research in this area targeting both methodology and political science applications

Les valeurs socioculturelles et monétaires des services écologiques rendus par les parcs nationaux du Québec
Les retombées économiques des parcs nationaux du Québec pour les collectivités périphériques sont de plus en plus connues, mais l’ensemble des bénéfices rendus par ces aires protégées reste encore à définir, surtout les avantages non financiers. Cette étude révèle les valeurs socioculturelles et monétaires d’environ 70 services écologiques et autres bénéfices retirés des écosystèmes des 23 parcs nationaux du sud du Québec, dont leurs valeurs indirectes et de non-usage. Nous avons tenté de décrire chaque service écologique qualitativement et quantitativement. Dans certains cas, leur valeur monétaire a été estimée. La valeur économique totale des parcs nationaux, sur la base de la valeur des écosystèmes, est estimée à 1 milliard de dollars par année, ce qui représente un capital naturel de 31 milliards de dollars. La valeur économique totale est environ le triple de celle des retombées strictement financières enrichissant les communautés périphériques. Ces valeurs sont légèrement inférieures à celles rapportées pour les parcs nationaux ontariens ou américains.There is a growing understanding of the positive economic impacts of national parks in Québec (Canada) on surrounding communities; however, the entire suite of benefits provided by these protected areas, especially those of non-financial value, has yet to be defined. This study reveals the sociocultural and monetary values of approximately 70 ecosystem services and benefits provided by the 23 national parks of southern Québec, including the values linked to indirect use and non-use. Each service or benefit is described qualitatively and quantitatively. In some cases, monetary values were estimated. Based on the value of their ecosystems, the total economic value of the 23 national parks is estimated at CAD 1 billion per year, which represents a natural capital of CAD 31 billion. This total economic value is about three times that of the financial advantages to the surrounding communities. The values obtained in this study are slightly lower than those produced for national parks in Ontario and the United States of America

High power hybrid fiber laser sources : Amplification and frequency conversion
Les lasers à fibre de haute puissance constituent depuis une dizaine d’année un outil pertinent pour un nombre croissant d’applications. Dans le cadre d’un contrat CIFRE entre la société Eolite Systems et le laboratoire Xlim (UMR 7252 du CNRS et de l’Université de Limoges), mon projet de thèse a consisté à développer les briques technologiques de futures sources lasersHigh-power fiber lasers adress an increasing number of applications since ten years. In the frame of a CIFRE contract between the company Eolite Systems and Xlim (joint laboratory between CNRS and the University of Limoges), the goal of this PhD project was to develop the technological blocs to achieve all-fibre high-power lasers emiting out of the conventional spectral band covered by existing lasers.Modal instabilities in large mode area (LMA) fibers are currently the main limitation of the fiber lasers power scaling. We have experimentally demonstrated the relevance of inner cladding aperiodic structures to efficiently delocalize higher order modes outside the gain region. A systematic study of passive fibers based on such structures has shown the single propagation of the fundamental mode over a wide wavelength range from 1 to 2 µm for dimension of core up to 85 µm. This effective mode delocalization even extends up to a core dimension of 140 µm at a 2 µm wavelength.The combination of high power picosecond fiber laser with an average power of 22.7 W and a hydrogen-filled inhibited coupling Kagome fiber allowed us to generate two Raman combs over five frequency octaves from 321 nm to 12.5 µm. These two combs are controlled by the laser pump polarization and generated an average power of 10.1 W displayed over 70 laser lines for circular pump polarization and 8.6 W over 30 lines for linear polarization. Some laser lines within these combs have been generated for the first time from high-power fiber source in the mid-infrared range. We have also demonstrated the generation of high-power line by optimizing the first vibrational Stokes at 1.8 µm with an average power of 9.3 W and a quantum efficiency of the frequency conversion stage close to 80%

Fables de La Fontaine: Une Anthologie proposée par Benoit Marchon
Here are forty-three fables presented by an artist I have enjoyed twice elsewhere. The book's unusual shape (6½ x 10¾) is the first clue that it is going to present traditional material in a fresh way. Almost every presentation involves two pages and clever positioning of a few key images. GA (10-11) presents an ant with a sack of grain on his back marching across the page above a grasshopper moving upwards with a guitar on his back: character, load, and direction are all different. FC presents a cheese with its owner's name struck through and changed from Corbeau to Renard (12-13). WS shows a stork with a scissors for a head beside an x-ray of a wolf's digestive tract with the bone lodged down the throat (22-23). The spilt milk of MM is blotting out drawings of hens, pig, and cow (30-31). The surreal style fits the approach perfectly. Sometimes I have no idea why an object is presented the way Jarrie presents it; other times it is perfect. The bull in OF holds the frog by a tether as though the latter were a helium-filled balloon (32-33). Maybe best of all is The Rat and the Elephant (50-51). The elephant is segmented to make room for the text. Between the elephant's legs, mostly hidden from us, a cat reaches out a paw for the minuscule rat under the elephant's big belly. For sheer fun, try The Lion Defeated by a Man (78-79). The book has a place-holding ribbon, a short life of both La Fontaine and of Jarrie, and a helpful glossary of unusual language in the fables. This book fulfills its rear cover's promise of a fresh entry into a fabulous zoological park.
